I knew mine because it was the animal that I felt the most affinity to. Ever since I was little I loved elephants. Never knew what it was but I started collecting them and as I got older and studied them more I have such respect for them. They are very maternal and that's how I am with all my friends' kids. I found out when I was about 17 that my great gram also collected elephants. Weird. It's quite possible that cats could be your spirit animal. If you've always had an affinity with them and felt as if they are a part of you and you are a part of them, I would say it's likely. As for what it means, that's kinda something you have to discover for yourself. Research cats and their history, research their habits and tendencies, their behavior. Why do you like them? What is it that draws you to them? Can you see yourself as a cat? What is the one main trait that you attribute to cats? Do you see that attribute in yourself?? What's my spirit animal?
So my art class is doing this project where we have to find our spirit animal and then do an art piece blah blah blah. My problem is that I CANNOT figure out what my spirit animal is. Most people in my class are just doing an animal they look like, and kind of act like. What is a spirit animal?

How do you find out what your spirit animal is?
I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really REALLY cannot STAND the mentalities that run behind these stereotypes. It is SO difficult to recognize that not everybody is smart enough to realize that this whole mythical aura that surrounds the very little the average american knows about Natives is completely BOGUS and was created by hollywood to sell movies. It doesn't help that new-age freaks, mistaken for the "real thing" (which I am, reside on the Rez and all) who are probably chemically imbalanced in addition to several other social and mental disorders, add to the problem by parading around like the bunch of crazy idiots they are, calling themselves windfire, spiriteagle, roaring thunder, etc while claiming to have a nameless great great great Chippewa or cherokee or blackfoot grandmother who's family hid the truth of her indianess until this generation. Nope. No spirit animals. And the purpose certain animals serve in our stories are about as significant "spiritually" to us as the Dove who carried the olive branch in the Bible is to Christians. At least my tribe, and most of the other tribes I know of anyways. Edit: Foedadea/Boo, I have tried to be patient and understanding in the past. I give up and get discouraged every single day when people confront me with this kind of stuff...I have to deal with it often, no joke or exaggeration...people come to the reservation with cameras as if they are going to a zoo and treat the people LIVING here like staff at an exhibit...it just gets exhausting. Especially because they have been "driving through the reservation for a half an hour and can't find any" (seriously, this kind of stuff happens often) or they walk into the museum and get upset that there arent teepees and human remains out on display (or voice recordings of chief Seattle's famous speech, lol) then go on to pick apart the aspects of your being that appear to be "genuinely indian" such as your cheekbones or eyes. (I kid you not)...and then start talking about their cherokee grandma, and the connection they have always felt to mother earth, or the spirit of some chief that came to them in a vision...it just gets old I think if I had a spirit animal it would be a barracuda

Well, I’m Native American, (Coushatta tribe of Louisiana on my dad’s side), and I don’t think that it’s disrespectful at all to have a spirit animal even if your original culture isn’t centered around or includes it at all.It’s a feeling. Oftentimes a dream. A deep spiritual connection with a beast that walks this Earth. You may have been your spirit animal in a past life, you may have simply been placed in the wrong body, your soul is connected with an animal’s, etc. Some sort of connection or association prompts a spirit animal to exist. Now, just given your traits, I cannot say much. I would say that you are a bat. Flighty, sleepy, loves hanging around with others, and the dark and mysterious vibe just screams bat. BUT.Remember that you don’t get to chose your spirit animal. I didn’t get to chose mine. I so desperately wanted to. I shifted between Snow Leopard and Snowy Owl and Arctic Wolf, Polar Bear and Sea Lion, Panther, Grey Wolf, all of these things that were simply NOT me, and I so, so wanted them to be. And I didn’t want that to be the case, but I’ve accepted it for what it is.To find your spirit animal, you need to meditate. Sleep. Dream. Think. Really, really think. Hard. About a past life or some connection. Not your favorite animal. Never your favorite animal. My case was a trial and error over two years. And it was fast. My journey was very fast, and I’ve taken a LOT of twists and turns. Something will happen and you’ll just know.My Awakening was when I was at the zoo, watching the hyenas. Alone, simply watching them. And then one of them meandered up to the edge of their enclosure, her eyes deep and brown, her ears perked just so. She looked at me, and I just felt it. If you had a human as your spirit animal, who would it be?
Human as a spirit animal would mean the species of humans, not an individual. The archetypes of the fool, the magician, the hermit and the high priestess in the tarot would most likely be good information on the aspects of the human spirit animal. Also any other primarily human tarot in the major arcana, I am drawing a blank on what other human figures there might be. If I was to pick a fun individual as my spirit animal it would have to be Banksey as the rodent.
What is the meaning of a spirit animal?
Your spirit is not an animal, but spirit guides understand that you may not be psychic so they will communicate anyway they can. So symbology is used, and the mere form of an animal can impart a message to you. There is further refinement such as if it appears on your left or right sides implies also slight difference. But it does not mean that you have an animal as a guide. Relax and if you can you can see your guide as a person, and then there is more symbology as to what this person will appear as. For many psychics they do high volume work so all they tune into is feeling and words.
