Which is better: sprinkler irrigation or drip irrigation?

Drip irrigation is more efficient and better for water conservation. The drip system puts the water right where you want it in the varrying proper amounts for each plant. Sprinklers probably cost less initially, but, depending on the $ you save from water conservation, the drip system may be more cost effective in the long run. How good is sprinkler irrigation for onion crop?

Afer the first irrigation For growth of the onion crop must be irrigated during each fortnight ,Also there are two types of onion who completes their life cycle in 3 months ,and other in 5 months , sprinkle irrigation helps in the 3 months onion crop , also this irrigation helps in the beginning of the onion and at maturity stage , by sprinkle we can sprey , fungicide, bacteriacide , and growth regular coz drops directed sprinkle on the online leaves so it it beneficialBut after the 60 to 70 days this sprinkle water affect on onion leaves so automatically affect on onion bulb, but my personal suggestion use a drip irrigation.

Why do farms use sprinklers instead of drip irrigation to water crops?

Sprinklers are more convenient to use as compared to drip irrigation and more cost effective in terms of labour cost and maintainance. Drip irrigation has life of 2–3 years and clogging problem in case of hard water due to deposition of salt on the outlet. Although the water use efficiency is more in drip irrigation but while placing next crop in the field requires careful handling of the setup which requires skilled labour for this which incurs more cost. On other hand Sprinklers have no such issue of clogging of emitters and it is convenient to move it from one place to another. Apart from more use of water in Sprinklers, it is cost effective. Recently, advanced type of overhead Sprinklers are used which uses water effectively and minimum labour cost. Only major cost ocur in installation of setup and it has very less maintainance cost and have longer life than drip.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of sprinkler irrigation?

Advantages of Sprinkler systems.
a. Sprinkler irrigation does not require surface shaping of leveling.
b. Can be applied to areas of variable topography.
c. Suitable for most crops, not all, and are adaptable to most irrigable soils.
d. Flexibility is possible because sprinkler heads are available in a wide range of discharge capacities.
e. Chemical and fertilizer applications are easily used with sprinkler systems.

Disadvantages of Sprinkler systems.
a. Water application efficiency under sprinkler irrigation is strongly affected by wind.
b. Some crops are particularly sensitive and may suffer leaf scorch because of the salts deposited on the leaves as the intercepted irrigation water evaporates.
c. Some crops are especially sensitive to fungal diseases, leaf scorch, or fruit damage, and tall crops may obstruct hand-move or side-roll portable systems.
d. Falling drops on bare soil, causing slaking and surface sealing (crusting) which can be severe when the sodium ion predominates in the water affecting the soil’s clay fraction.
e. High maintenance requirements, constant and meticulous maintenance of sprinkle irrigation systems is crucial if these systems are to justify their costs.
f. High operating pressures
g. The danger of system failure increases with technological complexity and requirements of expertise and quick availability of spare parts.
h. A malfunction of one of numerous parts can soon transform a working marvel of technology into a standing monument of inefficiency.

Why is drip irrigation the best method of watering plants?

Drip (Trickle) irrigation is the most EFFICIENT method, NOT the best method to water the plants.There is a difference.Drip irrigation has a big “No” for farm machinery unless it is specifically designed for it but that'd increase the installation cost. Furthermore, in areas with sufficient water, employing drip irrigation is overkill.In my home town, a farmer installed drip irrigation for his olive orchard because he was approached by conservationists and so, he had to pay a lot because they made him think it was the BEST. The irony is, that very farmer had about 3 hectares land nearby where he used Flood Irrigation for wheat/maize.

How can I design a drip irrigation system for my lawn?

Drip irrigation is a more precise and efficient way to deliver the right amount of water to the right plants. If you have a sprinkler system than you can easily convert it to drip irrigation. It provides a simple way to convert spray systems to drip eliminating runoff, blockage, and over spray.You can install a subsurface irrigation drip system about 3 or 4 inches below the ground under certain circumstances. Consisting of rigid pipes, it's a different type of system than a conventional one, and because it involves extensive trenching, it's best to install it before you plant the lawn. This type of system may be a good solution for an irregularly shaped lawn or one that's difficult to water, but it won't work well it there are many tree roots in the lawn.

Spray or drip irrigation, what offers the most value?

It depends on the project. Here are some general points to consider related to landscape and ornamental irrigation. 1. Drip based water delivery systems are relatively new compared to spray irrigation. RainBird has been around since the early 1930s. 2. At this time, it costs considerably more to install a drip watering system per square foot than it does to install a spray grid equivalent. In my city a fixed emitter drip system for turf costs 300% more to install than a spray grid system. 3. The endurance of drip watering systems is a concern. On traditional spray sprinkler systems I regularly encounter 60+ year old components during maintenance which are still functioning properly showing minimal signs of wear. Polypipe used in most drip systems is usually not rated to operate at more than 25 dynamic PSI and not rated to sustain constant mainline pressure. Standard class 200 PVC is rated at 200 dynamic PSI and 200 static PSI for many decades. Additionally, drip systems usually require much more substantial designs. In a typical turf watering application, emitters must be placed in a square grid pattern every 18-24 inches across the entire surface area to be watered. This usually results in substantially larger and more complex designs which are more difficult to maintain and more exposed to damage compared to the fewer more deeply buried components of a spray grid system. 4. Spray grid systems and their emitters and pressure regulating components have been developed and improved upon for a long time and are much more efficient than they have ever been. 5. All water loss in irrigation is measured in  degrees of uniformity. A perfectly efficient watering system would be said to have a 100% uniformity rate. Drip systems are generally rated near the 85-90 percentile of uniformity.  Well designed modern spray grid sprinkler systems usually rate in the 75-80 percentile.  So, in determining actual value... (at this time, in North Texas) drip irrigation systems are 5-15% more efficient than other methods but cost 300% more upfront.  Long term value and durability is more difficult to determine as drip based technology is still relatively new.
