Both.Some work. Some are gimmicky. I’ve come across creams and soaps that were very much gimmicky. There was a cream called “dermaline” from the Dominican Republic and the cream was just full of Zinc Oxide which is naturally white and used in suncreen and can cause that white cast. So, the cream merely made the skin look lighter but didn’t offer any sort of ingredient to actually lighten the skin.ive seen plenty of like soaps made from seaweed, teas, fruits etc which have little to no effect on the skin.the best thing to do is look for a product with one or multiple ingredients like Vitamin C(ascorbic acid), Kojic acid, glutathione, Arbutin, licorice root extract, or even Hydroquinone.It should be noted it takes about 6 months for it to makes a change. Plus, you need to use sunscreen religiously because the lightening soaps and creams makes the skin more sensitive and you can tan more easily making the lightening aspect seem like it doesn’t work.
