Which Language Is Most Difficult For An English Speaking American

Is Tamil a difficult language to learn for American English speakers?

Greek would obviously be more easier to understand than Tamil for you. Most English words are derived from Greek and Latin and hence as a native English speaker you would find either of them easier. However, Tamil belongs to an independent language family (called Dravidian) and hence you will find no similarities with English. So you are talking about learning brand new words, grammar and usage.

At the same time there is an advantage. I know a friend who was a native speaker of Catalan, but found it easier to learn Mandarin (Chinese) than French (which is very close to Catalan). Closer the languages are, it is easier to get it mixed up.

You might find it interesting that Tamil alphabets are phonetic. That is the alphabets are written the way they are pronounced. The language is written left to right but sometimes you might have to read some syllables from right to left. For eg., KA is written as க. This character becomes KE when it is preceded by a loopy alphabet கெ and as "kai" when written a more loopy alphabet கை.

This is not to scare you, but to show you what it includes to learn Tamil. Tamil has stringent rules and does not have any character silenced during pronunciation. This is a major advantage when compared to Greek which like in English, the pronunciation is subjective in many cases.

What language is most difficult, the english or the spanish? Why?

I have heard it's English. It's because in English, we can use many words to mean one thing unlike other languages. That's partly due to the slang we use.

Is it true that English is one the most difficult languages to learn?

It's a beautiful language , I don't find English conjugation, vocabulary or grammar to be challenging but I find very hard the pronountiation part .. For instance , for me it's difficult to correctly pronounce words that start with " th ". I think this is the way many immigrants who live in the U. S. see the English language , they don't have any problem reading , writing or listening the language but when it comes to speaking it they fail .
