He didn’t have 300 wives and 700 concubines, he had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3).If it follows the pattern with one of his wives, Pharoah’s daughter, and the language of 1 Kings 11:3 appears to support this (the NIV says ‘700 wives of royal birth’), it appears that he did it to promote peace with the surrounding nations. 1 Kings 3:1 saysAnd Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of DavidIt appears that more than any other reason, he married so many wives of royal birth to ‘make affinity’ with the nations they were from. Of course the sheer number precludes him from having had close emotional relationships with all of them. They would have had to have been mostly arranged marriages as part of diplomatic agreements with the surrounding nations.
