First of all, you don't get a dog for a child. You get a dog because YOU want one, since you will be the one caring for it for the next 10-15 years Secondly, you want to wait until the child is past the toddler stage. Toddlers have no concept of how to properly behave around a dog. Many dogs are abused by toddlers, and the most common age for children to be killed and injured by dogs is 3-5. Many breeders, rescues and shelter will not sell/adopt to families with young children.

Ultimately, the mix is potentially volatile. The guard dog will have to be very stable and easy going. A Mastiff fits the description, but it depends on your expectations of the dogs duties. A Mastiff’s appearance will go a long way, and their bark and growl can be frightening enough. If you want an attack dog, that is different and quite inconsistent with a lot of children playing.
What is the best type of dog for a visually impaired child, that is not a guide dog ?
I had a feeling it might be difficult to introduce a pet into the family with a two year old and new baby. He is able to see some so he wont qualify for a guide dog but I;d just like him to have a companion. Its been difficult to find resources for blind children and pets if it doesn't involve a guide dog.

My husband and I want to buy a little puppy and I love Yorkie puppies. We are planning on having children within one or two years. I have heard that Yorkie puppies are not good with little children and I worry about that. Is this true or does it just depend on the houshold?

well there are many i have a shih tzu and she loves children. and she is very obedieant. but yorkies, chihwauas, and pomerianen, and also papillions are good too. (but i have to warn you chihwauas bark A LOT!!)
