Which Of These Dogs Are Generally Best With Children

Best age to get a child a dog?

First of all, you don't get a dog for a child. You get a dog because YOU want one, since you will be the one caring for it for the next 10-15 years

Secondly, you want to wait until the child is past the toddler stage. Toddlers have no concept of how to properly behave around a dog. Many dogs are abused by toddlers, and the most common age for children to be killed and injured by dogs is 3-5. Many breeders, rescues and shelter will not sell/adopt to families with young children.

What is the best dog for children?

Without a doubt, the Golden Retriever. They are wonderfuly calm dogs with children. Preferably a bitch, (female for the PC crowd)They have rounded teeth, and are not a biting dog. Bred for recovering shot birds and small hunted creatures, the animal has very little aggressivity. They are also amongst the most intelligent of dogs, and fiercely protective of their children.Their only drawback, in that sense, is that going up against another dog, they are not great combatants, their bark is worse than their bite. But they will keep going. An excellent hunting dog, and an excellent dog for children, and adults alike.Better than the labrador.Beware of inter-breeders, and mixed breeding.Sheds a lot of hair, but it is worth it, as they are extremely friendly animals, and trusting. Loves water, and a damn fine swimmer. This is excellent, if you have young children in the water as the animal will watch without cease. They have to be trained however, to not want to “rescue” the children all of the time.Excellent care dogs.I remember our retriever used to pull my baby brother back into the corner couch, by gripping his forearm and pulling him accross the floor and into the couch. My brother never uttered any kind of cry of pain. She didn’t like to see him on the kitchen floor space, alone. (He wasn’t, but in the dogs mind, it was a dangerous place. All mammals “nest”.)The retrievers are known as “soft jaw” dogs. My number one suggestion.

What dog would be the best guard dog for a family with a lot of children?

You have put forth a conundrum. A “guard” dog is generally a more powerful dog capable of inflicting physical injury.“A lot of children” have a lot of friends. Ultimately, the mix is potentially volatile. The guard dog will have to be very stable and easy going. A Mastiff fits the description, but it depends on your expectations of the dogs duties. A Mastiff’s appearance will go a long way, and their bark and growl can be frightening enough. If you want an attack dog, that is different and quite inconsistent with a lot of children playing.

What is the best type of dog for a visually impaired child, that is not a guide dog ?

I had a feeling it might be difficult to introduce a pet into the family with a two year old and new baby. He is able to see some so he wont qualify for a guide dog but I;d just like him to have a companion. Its been difficult to find resources for blind children and pets if it doesn't involve a guide dog.

Are bull terriers good with children?

~Bull Terriers are known as friendly and outgoing dogs, even having a "clownish" attitude about them. Their physical strength is matched by their intelligence, and both body and mind need to be kept active. They can be fun and playful. As a breed they are generally placid and will not normally make the first move. They are very affectionate dogs that love human company. Bull Terriers are particularly good with children, and usually have a high pain threshold, which reduces the risk of injury from a defensive bite. Younger dogs, however, may regard children as playmates and because of their strength could cause inadvertent injury. They are protective of children in their charge. Bull Terriers do not make as good a guard dog as people think due to their fondness for people, but will defend their "pack" if needed. However, potential owners of this breed should be aware that Bull Terriers can be extremely aggressive and are capable of seriously injuring or killing other animals.

Are Yorkie dogs or Morkie Dogs good pets with babies and children?

My husband and I want to buy a little puppy and I love Yorkie puppies. We are planning on having children within one or two years. I have heard that Yorkie puppies are not good with little children and I worry about that. Is this true or does it just depend on the houshold?

Is English Mastiffs good dogs for families with small children?

English Mastiffs are great dogs, but they are not for everybody
Here is information on the breed that will help you decide whether or not this breed is right for you.

ALL breeds can be good with children, it just depends on how the puppy is raised with them.
If your children know how to properly treat a dog, and not treat him or her like a big stuffed animal and be rough and hurt him or her, he or she will grow up to be great around children and love them.

Are pugs a good breed of dog for young children?

For the right children, sure. For the wrong children, no.Pugs are generally pretty sturdy and generally pretty easy going, but no dog should be expected to put up with rough handling from children (or adults). But yes. Pugs, Havanese, and Cavaliers are the three toy breeds that are most often considered to be good with children, because they’re relatively sturdy and usually good-natured with children.Gentle children. With responsible parents.

What mixed breed dog has the best temperament for being around children?

Since a mixed breed dog can have any characteristics of either breed in the mix, there is no perfect answer to this question! For instance, a goldendoodle can have the sweet gentle personality of a golden retriever, or the high strung personality of an inbred poodle, so this crossbreed can be good or terrible with kids. Even with purebred dogs there is variation on how well the dog reacts around children. This variation is due to inherited temperament from the parents and ancestors and due to what experience (or lack of it) the dog has had with children of various ages. That said, if I HAD to pick, I would go for a chiweenie (cross between a dachshund and a chihuahua). Most of these little guys I have met have great personalities and never met a stranger. Just remember that you must test an individual dog with the children before you adopt it to be sure the dog behaves normally. And never leave children under 10 alone with dogs.
