Which Of These Four Is The Coolest Thing That Tends To Follow Minimum-wage Increases

Do you think it’s justifiable to ever pay less than minimum wage, why?

Let me flip the script and ask you why is it justifiable to charge more for a service than it is worth? Here is the thing about wages which the minimum wage increase crowd DON’T want to deal with. A wage is a payment for a service rendered. If the service is not worth what you pay for it, then you are most likely not going to pay it. A McDonald’s Happy Meal sells for what it does because it is what the market will bear. If McD’s suddenly charged $15 for it, I would suspect that few people would buy it. It’s worth $5.00 to most, but not $15.Let’s suppose a high school kid offers to mow your lawn. You haggle over the price. At some point, you say, ‘this is worth it. I’ll pay that,’ and then you get to a point where you say ‘Screw that, I’ll do it myself.’ Apply that thinking to hiring someone to flip burgers or asking “do you want fries with that?”The last thing that is not considered is that most of the minimum wage jobs are entry-level work that is traditionally staffed by teenagers; high school kids looking to make a few extra dollars for gas money or to go to the movies with a date. Flipping burgers should not be a career for someone with a family to support. I understand that some people find themselves in this situation, but this is not the norm, nor should it be.

Why does land heat and cool faster than water?

Here’s a simple attempt at an explanation. You need to understand that at similar conditions, land and water actually receive the same amount of heat. It’s just how much heat is needed to raise the temperature/hotness of the item. It’s because of heat capacity. Heat capacity is a measure of the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of one mole of a pure substance by one degree Kelvin, but intuitively it means how much heat energy you have to “pay up” in order to increase the temperature(or hotness) of a particular substance.Water is great at “storing heat”, because it takes a lot of heat energy to actually heat it as compared to say metal and sand. The opposite applies the same way too. Water cools down slower than land even if they release energy at the same rate.

What are the pros and cons of raising minimum wages?

If you are not willing to allow a response to your comments, perhaps you should not post them. This is a “discussion” board, not an “conformity” board.“The “pros” are that:A raise in the minimum wage reduces the need for welfare”There is no way you can assert that raising the minimum wage (MW) WILL reduce the need for welfare. An increase in the MW WILL result in an increase in cost to employers. This cost NEEDS to be covered somehow. There are only three ways to accomplish thisReduce staffincrease pricesShutter the businessAll of these have the effect of taking money from those at the bottom of the employment ladderSuch a rise in MW also does nothing for those without a job before the rise.“Raising the minimum wage would stimulate the economy”Raising the MW results in an increase in costs to the businessThis cost NEEDS to be covered somehow. There are only three ways to accomplish thisReduce staffIncrease pricesShutter the businessAll of these have the effect of taking money from those at the bottom of the employment ladderSuch will do nothing to stimulate the economy“Economic growth that results from raising the minimum wage would cause jobs to be created…more customers in other words”Just how much do YOU propose to increase the MW if you see it as CREATING new customers. The increase in MW results in additional costs, the result of which will be one or more of the followingReduce staffIncrease pricesShutter the business“A raise in the minimum wage would increase the tax base which would result in more revenue to our states and cities, and to the Federal Government.”This is the only thing you have gotten correctIn fact the Government will make out better than the worker under a rise in MWWith a rise to $10.10 the worker sees an increase in pay of some 35% to $620.89 (takehome)The IRS takes an increase of 61%SS increase of 39%Med increase 39%State increase 72%With a rise to $15 the worker sees an increase in pay of some 96% to $899.42 (takehome)The IRS takes an increase of 167%SS increase of 107%Med increase 106%State increase 187%“Raising the minimum wage also raises the average standard of living for our citizens, especially the working class.”Does very little to raise the standard of livingStandard of living is quite subjectiveThose at the bottom whether the bottom is $7.25 ( a very small group of people) or $15 it is still the bottomThe bottom is ALWAYS going to be called “poor”

Is 32 too old to be working in fast food?

To those who mentioned about going to college and getting another job-- Go to your local fast "food" businesses. Ask how many of the employees are in college or have earned college degrees. While in grad school (which one cannot enter unless s/he has an undergrad degree from a four year college, my husband worked at a McDonald's. I would work at a fast "food" restaurant before I would work at a strip club. If we take the rental house we looked at yesterday, I would be within walking distances of a Burger King and a McDonald's. I might just work there for the ability to walk to work and the supposedly flexible hours and to just get out of the house for a few hours a week. I'm 35. I would just probably be the only employee who wouldn't eat any of the merchandise. (Except for maybe diet soda and coffee.)

ETA: My husband would be working part time at a church, utilizing his master's of divinity degree. We have a five-year-old (who is attending a private pre-school) and a two-year-old and school loans. He even said that if he had to, he'd work at a fast "food" restaurant again. (Also, we have qualified, and probably do again, for Medicaid and WIC, but do not use them.... Yet.)

Spokane vs. Coeur D'Alene?

I am moving to the eastern Washington, Idaho panhandle area and need to decide in which state I want to purchase a house and raise my family. Does anyone have any preferences for one place over the other? What are the taxes like in each place, general political and social climate, any other pros or cons? Any information would be appreciated.
