Best way to scan old photos onto computer?

I think you are most likely going to end up with a flatbed scanner like the Epson Perfection series, and will need to load them one at a time. There are some autoload scanners out there, but you might find them to cost more and may run into some quality issues.
With the (manual) flatbed scanner, you will probably want to load them one at a time if your prints vary in size or exposure...that way you can make corrections or crop along the way. It is a lot of work; however, it is quite easy and you will be able to do a stack of photos while watching TV or talking to someone. Depending on the software, you can probably scan several photos in one operation and still maintain different exposure settings for each individual photo. I'm pretty sure the Epson will allow that.
Flatbed scanners also have the ability to scan from negatives, which will give you a better archival copy than a scan from a print (but if you don't have the negative, the scan from the print is not a bad option.) And although scanning from negatives yield better archival copies, the negative scan is very sensitive to dust...the software should have "ICE"...which removes some of the effects of dust when scanning. I also use a Giotto dust remover (see link). If you are scanning from negatives, you can do a whole sheet of negatives in one consolidated scan operation (maybe up to 24 prints in one sweep).

I recently got rid of a lot of my college photo albums by digitizing it into hard drive...I scanned the negative if I had it, then scanned from the print if the negative did not exist. It was a lot of work, but very satisfying in the end.

Oh, and if you think you are done with owning a scanner after you finish digitizing all your photos, you are probably not done. I use the scanner to archive all my bills (if I can't get the PDF version online), letters, tax returns, receipts, Christmas cards, etc. (Hardcopies get recycled after they are scanned.) It is constantly being used to keep the clutter down in my home. Though it takes up space on your desk, you will open up more space in your home with a little discipline...and end up being super organized assuming you use a clever filing method.

One last thing...once you have your 'digital negatives' on your hard drive, back it up onto an external USB or eSATA hard drive. This external drive is what you grab if your home or apartment is on fire (if grabbing it doesn't endanger your evacuation.)

Photo Contest: Better to use Gloss or Matte Finish?

I am entering a photo contest that requires a color print of the digital photo. I have a few to use, but where I get them processed has two options: gloss or matte finish.

1) Which is more professional looking, and will yield the best result? I am under the impression that professionals will be reviewing the pictures.

2) Second, the maximum required size given by the contest is 9 x 12". Is 8x10 the best size, or is it overkill?
Thank you for any advice.

Who took your best picture?

I did. But of course, I was in front of the camera. I took this photo while I was visiting national parks in the western USA. This huge lizard sculpture was outside of the Escalante region park headquarters, just west of the town of Escalante, Utah. I checked with the rangers that it was OK to sit on the statue, and used a long cable release and timer and tripod to shoot the photo. I was going for a rodeo look. If you are familiar with the American tradition of the tall tale, I was going for a Pecos Bill concept. He rode a tornado in one story, for example. I had a desert hat, not a cowboy hat, so the photo fell a little short of what I desired, in that regard. But it’s still my favorite self portrait. Since I’m the photographer in my family, it’s the best photo of me.

Can anyone best describe the style of these photos, e.g. the print/photography?

Black and white photo, mild sepia tones.those photos are of hippy era by the attire, hair style i.e 1960 to late 70 era…cams famous that time were the Rolleiflex twin lens reflex system.i believe it was Fuji film with asa 100 rather than Kodak, cos Fuji had a slight sepia tint if I remember.

Which of these 3 photos is best suited as a LinkedIn profile picture and why?

Out of the 3 photos you provided, the first one is the best selection for 3 reasons:It's warmer, both in color and feel.Your smile looks more natural. The angle is straight on and distance is appropriate, instead of being above or too close up.Another good point (in general across all 3 photos): The background is blurred, so visual distractions are minimized and the focus is on your face. However, since this photo is specifically for LinkedIn, I'll note that it clearly looks like a "selfie," which is great for Facebook or other personal social sites, but typically is a "no-no" for the professional nature of LinkedIn's platform.I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker per se, because I wouldn't discount it as unprofessional, but I would definitely recommend having someone else take a nice photo of you (a friend or colleague if you can't or don't feel like getting a photographer).Best of luck!Have more questions related to this topic? Is the sentence "this is one of the best photos I've seen for you" correct?

It is grammatically correct if you wanted to express that the photo was a gift to the recipient and the quality of the photo was one of the best amongst all the gift photos the recipient had received. If not, you probably will need to use “this is one of the best photos I have seen OF YOU”, which means the photo is the person’s portrait; or “ this is one of the best photos I have seen OF YOURS”, implies the photo is taken by the person, and it is one of his best works.
