Is Quora considered a primary or secondary source?

Let’s start with an easy comparisonQuora:Quora’s mission is to share and grow the world’s knowledge. A vast amount of the knowledge that would be valuable to many people is currently only available to a few — either locked in people’s heads, or only accessible to select groups.Quora is where you can read important insights that have never been shared anywhere else, from people you could never reach any other way.[1]Wikipedia:Wikipedia is an encyclopedia written in a neutral point of view. [2] It is not for primary (original) research, personal inventions, essays, or opinions. [3]So Wikipedia will never be a primary source they simply do not allow it, Quora on the other hand doesn’t have any policy that forbids it. Therefore it can be a primary source. So if a scientist wants to publish original research on Quora s(he) can do that. I haven’t found any and I doubt it will ever happen. Quora is just not the place for it and it will most likely get almost no upvotes. But they can. Also for opinions and personal stories some answers can be considered primary source. So if someone decides to make an biography of Balaji Viswanathan (பாலாஜி விஸ்வநாதன்) some of his Quora answers can be used as primary source. Same for the political opinions of Matthew Bates and Habib Fanny: they’ve made a book together. I’ve not read it, but I can imagine that some parts of this book were published first as quora answers. Slightly depending on your definition of primary source these answers can be considered as a primary source. So to conclude Quora can be a primary source, but most of the time it is not.Footnotes[1] https://www.quora.com/about[2] Wikipedia:Five pillars - Wikipedia[3] Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not - Wikipedia

Is Maus a primary or secondary source?

This would be considered a secondary source, as Art Spiegelman wrote the comic based on what his father told him about his and his wife's (Art's mother) experiences during the Holocaust. If this were written by Art's father, it would've been a primary source because it would've come from someone with first-hand experience. It gets a little tricky with Maus simply because it is a story about Art's retelling of his father's experiences (as he doesn't depict it as the story itself, but rather as the story as his father is telling it), but it is a secondary source because the point of the graphic novel is to tell the story of their experiences in the Holocaust.

I've read both volumes of Maus and it's a very well done graphic novel series.

Would the catechism of the catholic church be considered a primary source?

*Is Catholic*

The Catechism is not a primary source. It is rather a secondary source. If you look at the footnotes in the CCC, those are mostly primary sources.

Ratzinger, in Introduction to the Universal Catechism page 25 says specifically that the Catechism is not a super dogma and has no authority above what was previously said in the documents that it cites.

Is a newspaper a primary source?

Hi,

A primary source is a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. These sources were present during an experience or time period and offer an inside view of a particular event.

Examples of primary sources include:
Diary of Anne Frank - Experiences of a Jewish family during WWII
The Constitution of Canada - Canadian History
A journal article reporting NEW research or findings
Weavings and pottery - Native American history
Plato's Republic - Women in Ancient Greece

A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources in them.

Examples of secondary sources include:
A journal/magazine article which interprets or reviews previous findings
A history textbook
A book about the effects of WWI

So to summarize,

If the publication was an original piece of work from the 1930s then it would classify as a primary source because the writer was present during that time (even if he wasn't in Germany). If the article was an analysis of another article or published work then it would be considered a secondary source.

As I have not read the article that you are referring to, you must make your own conclusion but I would venture to say that there is a very high probability that it is a primary source.

Hope that helps.

Good luck and be good.

Is an interview a primary source?

From my understanding of "primary source," yes, an interview would be considered a primary source. A primary source is a document that relates information "first-hand" rather than providing additional commentary on original documents. For example, a transcript of the Palin-Biden debate would be considered a primary source, whereas an article in the New York Times about the debate would be considered a secondary source.

Why is electricity considered a secondary source of energy, while solar energy and water energy are considered primary sources of energy?

A primary source of energy is a fossil fuel, nuclear fuel, wind, water, or sunlight in an unconverted state. A secondary source of energy is created when a primary source of energy is burned or otherwise converted into a form, like electricity, that can be used for useful work.

What are primary source, secondary source and tertiary source? Provide examples.

A primary source is an original document. Examples would be the US Constitution, or the Declaration of Independance. Personal journals, letters, and legal documents are also considered primary sources. A secondary source discusses, interprets, or explains primary sources. Noted scholars who write explanatory texts about primary sources, are considered secondary sources. Then there are the tertiary sources. These are things like encyclopedias, which get their information from secondary and primary sources. Often tertiary sources are discussions about the veracity or completeness of a summary.Researcher publishes data - primary source.Medical journal summarizes researchers data - secondary sourceA different journal critics the summary of the data - tertiary source

Is "The Odyssey" by Homer a primary source?!?

As the second-oldest work of Greek literature, it's definitely a primary source! Unless your topic has to do with the Greek language of the time, it doesn't matter that you're reading and citing the book in English.

For secondary sources, I recommend Charles Gayley's Classic Myths and Robert Graves's The Greek Myths. Edith Hamilton's Mythology is also a widely used source, but I think it's a little elementary--OK for high school but maybe not for college.
