Which Party Would Abraham Lincoln Be In Today

If Abraham Lincoln were alive today, would he be a member of the modern Republican Party?

Most of the issues then are different from issues now.  However, one that is still around is states' rights vs. federal rights.  Lincoln was in the latter group - like the Democrats today.  Another issue is suffrage - Lincoln was for expansion of suffrage, like the Democrats.  And he was for a less interventionist military strategy abroad (re the Mexican American war) - again like the Democrats. Another hint is demography.  The states that were in the Confederacy are mostly Republican now.  And Lincoln's home state of Illinois is mostly Democratic. Conclusion: Although one can't say for sure, Lincoln is more like modern Democrats than modern Republicans.

What party did Abraham Lincoln belong to?

the Republican Party

What political party was Abraham Lincoln?

Abraham Lincoln started out a Whig, as he was a staunch abolitionist. The Whigs eventually disbanded. The remnants of the party merged with the ideals of other political parties became the Republican Party, which nominated its first candidate (John Fremont) against James Buchanan, unsuccessfully in 1856. Lincoln, joining in 1854, was nominated six years later as the presidential candidate. He became the first Republican to win the presidency after defeating John Breckenridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglas. The southern states seceded, which started the Civil War. In 1864, Lincoln ran for re-election under a different political party, the National Union Party. The name was created to attract Democrats and war hawks, who didn’t support the Republicans. Lincoln beat General George McClellan in a landslide. So the political parties that Abraham Lincoln were in are:Whig Party (1834–1854)Republican/National Union Party (1854–1865)

If Abraham Lincoln were still alive today would he be a Democrat?

When the republican party first started in the 1800's it was a northern liberal party and 1800's democrats were southern conservatives that defended the Confederate flag.Abraham Lincoln was a moderate liberal northern republican who started civil rights and ended slavery.

Everything changed in 1964 when democrat president Lyndon Johnson ended Jim Crow Segregation and all the southern conservative democrats switched over to the republican party and democrats became a northern liberal party.

That's why today's republican party is a southern white conservative party and today's democrat party is a northern liberal party with 90% of the black and latino voters.

In today's Gop party moderate liberal republicans like Abraham Lincoln don't exist any more and today most southern conservative republicans defend the Confederate Flag.

That's why liberal Obama praises and looks up to liberal Abraham Lincoln.

Would Abraham Lincoln be a Republican today?

Abe Lincoln would almost certainly belong to the modern Democratic Party. When he was president the republican party was the party of liberalism. Lincoln increased governments interference into many aspects of social life, creating grants for colleges to be built in every state of the union. He also signed the Revenue Act of 1861, creating the first income tax in US history. He subsidized the railroads, created the department of Agriculture, and sold Federally subsidized land in the West.

So lets recap. There's a politician who creates income taxes, subsidizes the economy, increases federal bureaucracy, and interferes heavily with states rights?

Sounds like a liberal to me.

What might Abraham Lincoln think about the modern day Republican Party?

I suspect he might be dismayed. It is well to remember that the Republicans were considered dangerous radicals by Americans at the time, and that Lincoln was a minority president who only won because Douglas and Breckenridge split the Democratic vote. Even as late as the era of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there were many Republicans who were considered dangerous radicals because they had joined the party of Lincoln because they were progressives at heart. Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge are the two most prominent examples, although both opposed the “free silver” populists in general, and William Jennings Bryan in particular. Roosevelt profited from the black vote by his appeal to the legacy of Lincoln.

If Abraham Lincoln were alive today, what would his opinion of Obama and Trump be?

In spite of himself, Lincoln might actually harbor a grudging admiration for a rogue like Trump. Abe was no prude; before he married Mary at the age of 33, he was a regular patron of Springfield’s whorehouses. And while his Springfield house is not garish by any standards, unlike the Mango Moron’s Trump Tower penthouse, after buying the house he did enlarge it until it was the biggest house in the city. Small as it is by modern standards, it’s still amazing that the Lincolns threw parties in that house for several hundred people at a time.In 1832 Lincoln was elected captain by the members of a volunteer militia company he had joined. Lincoln said it was “a success which gave me more pleasure than any I have had since.” That’s the only time he ever wore a military uniform, but it’s enough that I think he’d be disgusted by Trump’s weaseling out of military service by the “bone spurs” excuse.Lincoln famously said in his second inaugural address that “with malice toward none, with charity for all” he wanted to reintegrate the Confederate states into the Union. He would have been appalled by Trump’s determination to hold grudges and, as a man legendary for his sense of humor, by Trump’s mean-spirited attempts at humor.Confederate apologists often point to examples of Lincoln’s racism. At the start of the Civil War, he said his goal was to preserve the Union, and if he had to do so by leaving slavery legal, he would. Privately, he supported sending freed slaves back to Africa. However, his opinions about race evolved, and he did throw his considerable weight behind ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment. Evidently he didn’t mind that Mary’s closest friend was her dressmaker, a freed slave.Barack Obama’s exotic upbringing in Hawaii and Indonesia would have fascinated him, but he would have admired Obama, and they probably would have become fast friends. He certainly would have congratulated Obama for making Illinois his adopted home, as Lincoln himself did, and would have been pleased that Obama chose Springfield to announce in 2008 that he was running for president.

What party would abraham lincoln belong to in modern times?

Liberal Democrat.
