Which Philosopher Of Education Do You Think Made The Biggest Impact In United State. John Dewey

What's the importance of studying the history of education?

History of Education will help you to understand how the past events shaped the present education systems, theories and related phenomenon in the area of teacher education in particular and education in general. Secondly, it will enable you to appreciate the importance of education to mankind since time immemorial across the generations. By so doing, you are will be able to critically examine the fundamental part which education plays in the transformation of society. Note that as a teacher, you are a change agent so learning the history of education will prepare teachers in training to examine present trends and dynamics in education, draw practical lessons from the past, avoid possible mistakes, and initiate more viable plans for the benefit of Society. The teaching and learning of History of Education in Nigeria is therefore justified for many reasons, some of these include the fact that it would enable teachers in training to have adequate knowledge of; what our educational policies are and what they are not; the philosophical ideas guiding the Nigerian education; the contributions of the ancient nations and scholars to the development of the country’s education and the major trends in the development of our education in Nigeria which may encourage them to be willing to contribute their own quota to the development of education in the country whenever they are in the position to do so.

What do you think about John Dewey and pragmatism in education?

A problematic question. It starts dishonestly, seeming to suggest that John Dewey was a pragmatist. As in, practical. Do we have any reason to think that he ever was pragmatic? To me, John Dewey is the embodiment of an ideologue. If he described himself as “democratic” or “a pragmatist,” he was merely putting on camouflage. For that reason, the word “socialist” was never used. Dewey and his gang called themselves “Progressives.”.John Dewey is best described as a Fabian Socialist, working in secret, working underground, to transform the United States into a socialist country. He did great work for this conspiracy. The brilliance of his work was that he wrote in a very elevated, educated way, seeming to suggest an Olympian mind. Here’s what his mind was: made up. He had all the answers by 1900. The challenge was to discuss and communicate these ideas without alarming the general public. He did this very well.Dewey, like the Education Establishment he helped to spawn, was never pragmatic in the sense that if his theories lead to bad results, he would change those theories. Never happened. These people were pragmatic in a very different way. If their theories lead to bad results and the public perceived this, the Education Establishment would rewrite the jargon and marketing copy, expressing the same bogus ideas in more appealing language. This is what we have seen for example in reading instruction, where the experts started with look-say; as the years went by, it became whole word, sight words, Dolch words, Fry words, whole language, balanced literacy, high-frequency words, and several others. A dozen different ways to say the same thing: no phonics. There is nothing pragmatic anywhere in here except that they knew they were selling a pig and they had better find some pretty new lipstick to put on it.I had a lot of fun a few years back writing my paean to John Dewey: “Phooey on John Dewey”—Phooey on John Dewey--The Dewey Deception

What is the relationship between education and philosophy?

Principles and values of life learnt through education and experience gives birth to philosophy in one's life.Philosophy lays the foundation of leading one's life based on our principles.Education is the source of learning and philosophy it's applications in our daily life. Education and philosophy, the two disciplines, are very closely related and in some areas they overlap each other. It is quite often said that, 'Philosophy and Education are two sides of the same coin'. 'Education is the dynamic side of philosophy'.Education is practical in nature and philosophy is theory. It is not vague to say that theory and practical are identical. The educator, who has to deal with the real facts of life, is different from the arm chair theorist who is busy in speculation.Philosophy is a way of life. In a wider sense philosophy is a way of looking at life, nature and truth. It sets up the ideals for an individual to achieve them in his life time.Education on the other hand is the dynamic side of philosophy. It is the active aspect and the practical means of realising the ideals of life. Education is a sacred necessity of life, both from the biological and sociological point of view.

Why was Deming's philosophy considered controverisal?

I am not sure that "controversial" is the correct term here. Deming
offered a new approach to the conduct of business that held to
the idea that a business is a system designed to produce goods or
services at the lowest cost and the highest quality. It should, in
his approach, function systemically. The objections to his
approach was that the system he suggested was a complete
restructuring of the methods of management, production, quality
and customer relations. If implemented, it would break the
power stranglehold that management has over the workers.
The manager/laborer approach would be replaced by a master teacher/
student approach in which the power and control oriented
philosophy of the era, would be eliminated. A manager would
be one who knows whats required and can pass that along to the
workers who are to perform the work. In addition, departmentalization
would be replaced with a generalized systemic approach where
the focus would be on production policy for the system as a whole.
Technological aspects of the business entity would be subservient
to the humans they served. This is the general picture. The
unsolved problem in Deming's approach was the human factor.
The current management techniques in effect appeal to the
managers who, as a rule, are hungry for power and control.
This fact was ignored by Deming. It was not ignored by the
men and women who function as managers in today's world.
Deming knew this and, in fact, suggested that transforming
an exist business philosophy would take time to allow the
"old school" managers to die out to be replaced by the new.

What should the U.S. do to improve the quality of its education?

I have been a certified public school teacher and have taught 140 college and university courses, so I have a lot of experience with our education system. The American education system is very weak for the most part. It is very well-funded but fails to produce results in most places. And it’s basically the fault of the liberal minded professionals who control the system.First eliminate the teachings and philosophy of John Dewey from our education system and return to teaching the basics. Get rid of such ridiculous policies like “no tolerance” and punishing students for resisting aggression. Eliminate the NEA, the Department of Education, teacher certification programs, and state boards of education. Get rid of the overload of over-payed bureaucratic administrators. Return the curriculum and financing to the local level. At the university level, make student loans and federal financing of education illegal, so it is no longer a fountain of money for bureaucratic administrators and tenured professor. Eliminate the financial exploitation of adjunct professors. Most tenured professors make from $10,000 to $30,000 per class with full benefits. Adjuncts are about $2,000 a class with no benefit.I could go on but it would take a book to expound on the corruption and inefficiencies of our current system, so I have just mentioned a few things to consider. I know that those with a vested interest in our current system may be offended by what I have written here, so I encourage everyone to consider why I have posited such radical changes. The main consideration should be results, not theory and philosophical approaches. Currently the expense is high and the results are meager.
