What is the meaning of the phrase: "Hobnob with the big wigs at the wing dings"?

It's "hobnob", not "hob knob". It means socializing with notable or famous persons. A "big wig", similarly, is a notable or famous person. A "wingding" is a grand or lavish party. So the phrase should read "hobnob with the big wigs at the wingding", and means "socialize with celebrities at the party".

Which is your most favourite biscuit in India and why?

Simply has to be the famous Shrewsbury biscuits from Pune's Kayani Bakery. The packaging has not changed in the last thirty years I have had this brand of biscuits, neither has the taste of utterly buttlerly deliciousness of creamy, melt-in-the-mouth white butter, perfectly sweetened, with the right crunch…Oh, their new addition - the Ginger biscuits would transport people like me into another era! These have always come packed in a blue cardboard box, neatly stacked in two rows in a small plastic packet, secured with twine that must have been made in bulk a.hundred years ago. There is always a queue outside the bakery and there always are customers who have to go away empty handed because the bakery has never quite bothered to figure.out the demand vs supply figures, unless the attempt to create a crisis situation on a daily basis is deliberate. In any case, these biscuits are to die for - and any guest from Pune is expected to carry a box for every family he/she visits along with some of the equally famous and zaalim namkeens - Laxminarayan Chiwda to feel absolutely welcome.I present you the biscuits that could start or stop a war…Just as a bonus, in case you have a tooth for the savory…

Is LA like it is in movies?

uh, no, LA is a shthole unless you have money. if you have money, it's like the movies, if you're a regualr joe who works regualr jobs for a regular check, it's a nightmare city where you'll get scrwed six ways from sunday before your first week is up there, it will chew you up and spit you out.

What are Republicans and Democrats both wrong about?

Most glaringly, it is their reluctance to work with each other to get things done. Both parties have moved so far to one extreme or the other that there is no room for compromise and without compromise, governments simply don’t work. For Democrats, this infatuation with Socialism stems from an ignorance of history. While some Socialist inspired programs, such as Medicaid and Social Security are good, widespread Socialism as is advocated by many Democrats today simply doesn’t work. More countries have been crushed economically by Socialism and more people have been murdered under the rule of Socialist nations than all other political ideologies and religions combined.Another area Democrats err on is their insistence on mandating tolerance and acceptance to the point of becoming intolerant and unaccepting themselves. While there absolutely should be laws in place protecting everyone from discrimination or abuse based on their religion, race or lifestyle choices, Democrats have taken this idea much further than is appropriate, to the point they’re actually requiring things like gender fluidity and Islamic beliefs be taught in many schools without allowing parents to opt out. This may be well intentioned, but it violates the right of Christian parents to raise their children with the moral values of Christianity.Republicans, on the other hand, make light of environmental concerns and in many cases deny they even exist. They also take the opposite road with issues of morality and in many cases want to impose their views of morality on others. It is my view that the government should stay out of the issue of morality all together. They should neither legislate morality nor promote amoral ideas. It is not the government’s place to decide what is morally right or wrong. There are many other things both parties get wrong, but for me, these are the most glaring examples.

Have you ever been acknowledged by someone famous?

Not only famous but someone I look up to :) I am a nerd and my heroes include techies, entrepreneurs and few VCs.I was part of the INSITE Fellowship program when I was pursuing MBA at NYU Stern. The fellowship helped MBA students provide consultation on pitching, positioning etc to startups in NYC. Every semester, we worked with a startup and in between, there were networking events with VCs.In one such event, we were meeting the famed and very awesome Fred Wilson from Union Square Ventures. He had invested in twitter, foursquare and many other most popular startups of that time (I’m talking about 2010–11).I mentioned something and he said, “send me an email”. I instantaneously and quite unconsciously replied, “oh come on, you don’t reply to your emails from people like me.” And he said, “I do”. After 2 mins of back and forth, he took out his phone and showed me his inbox – sorry, his priority inbox. He said, “see that email, now thats a nice subject, I will check it.” “But what if my email gets stuck in your regular inbox?” was my immediate question? “Then, nothing can happen. So you need to at least make it to my priority inbox, can you?” “I will find a subject interesting enough for you then” He smiled cunningly and said, “lets try”. I did and both of my emails eventually showed in his priority inbox few mins later! I am sure he was humoring me but that was so awesome. This happened and I blogged about it next morning and sent him the link. To my utter pleasure and surprise, he wrote a post about ‘How to get your emails read’ on his super duper popular AVC blog that same day and linked me :OImagine the traffic to my blog that day. I only got to know when one of my classmates called me to congratulate on making it to Fred’s blog. That was one hell of an interesting day to say the least :)Meeting Fred Wilson

Why do philosophers on Quora want to be seen as respectable and socially beneficial?

Not particularly —- but these are contrary demands for an academic. Academic respectability is almost always compromised by presence on social media and indeed by most forms of para-academic popularity. The ideal of academic respectability is a bit like the ideal of modest beauty that tyrannically governed the lives of women in the past, and has not yet entirely lost its force… Everyone should know how beautiful they are, but, god forbid, that they appear on the street! God forbid they show off — turn their beauty into a spectacle…And so it is with academics… Your “brilliance,” which has all the fetish value of a nubile maiden’s thighs in days of your, should be whispered about soto voce — and then you can have a “coming out” part — a dissertation defense — and then you should get “married” — get a job — and exercise your virtue in the production of an endless succession of children, articles and books, and students, who in turn should go on to great things… Perhaps if you have reached a respectable old age without too much shame, are in a position of prominence within the academy, and especially if you live near NYC and hobnob with the right people at cocktail parties, you can write articles for the New York Review of Books, or even an op-ed for the NYTimes.Of course, there are also the academic celebrities. These are a rather new phenomena. Academic celebrities, like other celebrities, occupy a peculiar place within society: they are able to shame themselves publicly, and this imparts to them a kind of aura, a mystical power… In a culture where the feeling of shame is still weakly alive —not as general moral imperative, but as an inner voice of self-restraint, as “superego”— the publically exposed celebrity body has amazing power; the power that comes from transgressing norms with impunity…If I (an “obscure” theorist-philosopher but with some modest degree of respectability) appear on Quora, it is not to appear respectable… This would be stupid…And to be socially beneficial? I do feel as though there is some good to come by trying to give people a better sense for what philosophy is, and to resist the anti-intellectualism that seems so rampant… And also to respond to questions from some position of expertise rather than just saying what I think…But this is a Sisyphean labor…
