Which anime character has the most awesome and/or best fitting voice (subbed or dubbed)?
For me it's Naruto, the English dubbed version, by Maile Flanagan. Before your eyes roll right out of your head please listen to my logic…If you had asked me this a few months ago I probably would have had a very different answer. You see, I like Naruto ok, I watched all of the original series, but it doesn't even break my top twenty favorite list and is not an anime I think about a lot. But I had a unique experience at an Animefest.I run a green screen booth/business at conventions. Taking photos of people and putting them in backgrounds of their choice and they get a print, start to finish in about fifteen minutes. So I'm editing a photo and I hear a snippet of conversation.The voice is familiar and almost immediately I realize it's Naruto. But the content of the conversation is not from any episode I had seen. I look around to see where Naruto is playing so I can figure out what episode it is, and see Maile Flanagan having a conversation in character with a fan.Up to that point I had no idea who she was. After maybe ten words that had nothing to do with the show, but were said in character, I had no doubt. I am hard-pressed to think of another anime voice that is as instantly recognizable without a catchphrase.And it may be that I watched all of the episodes of Naruto and got used to it, but I can't imagine Naruto having any other voice. The voice just fit the character and how he was.I was lucky enough to have Maile come and take photos at my booth and I got to talk with her a bit. She is a lovely person and if you every get a chance to meet her, don't pass it up!Maile photo-bombed this guy's Naruto Cosplay photo. I was looking through the viewfinder and suddenly she was there! He freaked out after she left, “I should have given her a kunai but I couldn't move!”
What character in a movie could have been great, but the actor they cast didn’t fit the role?
Halle Berry should have never gotten the role for Storm in the original X-Men franchise.Storm is an African princess.She was the leader of the sewer dwelling Morlocks.She was even leader of the X-Men on multiple occasions.She has always delivered a strong, regal, and nubian feel to the character.Nothing about Halle Berry's role showed the strength of the character.The best choice for Storm at that time was Angela Bassett…Her presence and acting ability would have really brought the real Storm alive.Edit: when I mentioned the presence of Storm, I'm speaking of nonverbal nuances and body language. Actors get a lot of leniency when developing a character's traits. Wolverine and Jack Sparrow are prime examples of this. Coming from royalty Storm would have had a regal demeanor: strong, authoritative, majestic.Angela Bassett pulled this off even as T'Challa's mother in Black Panther. She would have definitely done the same as Storm. Neither Berry nor Shipp successfully pulled that off. End EditThe current choice of Alexandra Shipp is a much better choice. She delivers on looks and the sex appeal.But Storm’s presence is still not being represented properly. A better choice with the current X-Men franchise would have been…Lupita Nyong'o. She has the look, the presence, and the acting ability for Storm. She even has the pedigree, actually being from Africa.The most ironic part is that Storm and T’Challa (Black Panther) were married for a time. And Lupito is playing the character of his current love interest in the Black Panther movie. How awesome would it have been if she was playing Storm in X-Men and did a crossover in Black Panther.Ahhhh! What could have been!Maybe the next reboot when adding the X- Men to the MCU will fix this issue.
Why does everybody like japanese naruto better the the american version?
I can understand if japanese people like it better, but why would anybody in this country want to watch a show and read the subtitles when they could just be patient and wait until the dubbed versions are released? some people say the american version sucks, i just dont see the big difference between the japanese version and the american version, they dont change the story line or the actioin, they just change the voice actors, which of course they have too, and they edit it a little bit for the cartoon network viewers.
Does gaara sound better in Japanese or English?
believe it or not, i actually agree with you. When it comes to naruto/shippuden i usually prefer watching it in japanese because to be honest the english cast sucks, especially naruto's voice in my opinion... But i have to say, i believe that gaara's english voice is a perfect match to the character and his personailty.
In the anime industry, why do English voice actors get so little respect?
I suppose it’s the difference between:Chinese food cooked by an American (or the equivalent).Chinese food cooked by a Chinese person.Imagine going to a Chinese Restaurant and being served food by a British cook.How would you feel?Personally I’d prefer to have it made by someone who’s Chinese. Because it’s likely it’ll taste better, 9/10.That’s not to say they wouldn’t know how to cook Chinese, it’s more like you can’t do it better than a native in most cases.I look at the whole “dub vs sub” the same way.Most people watch subbed shows because that’s the original thing.If you’re like the average person, you’d rather stick with the original because technically, it’s likely to be better.But the problem with the anime industry is:This is taken to a whole new level of disrespect when the “original” is dubbed by English voice actors. Even if it’s a GOOD dub.Some fans are pure elitists. If it’s not done by a Japanese voice actor, they assume it’s a piece of s***.And so that’s exactly how they treat English Voice actors: like s***.Those who treat English voice actors this way are mostly driven by ego.It’s kind of like how some people believe they’re better than you because they own a “macbook” and you own a measly Windows computer that cost £500 less.Outside of the “elitist” group I wouldn’t say they’re hated. Hate is a strong word.But because so many people are like that in the anime community (sad to say) then this is the treatment VA’S get.And by the way:Script changes is no excuse for blatant disrespect.Dubs don’t always go perfectly, and subs aren’t perfect either.Those squeaky Japanese voices don’t do it for me, and yet you won’t see me bashing Japanese VA’S anytime soon.Besides that, you have to remember: Japan doesn’t care too much about it. Hence why SO FEW dubs exist in the first place.Less than 10% of anime shows are even dubbed at all.100% of every anime is subbed for obvious reasons. So it’s an unequal comparison to begin with.English VA’S mostly get hate for childish reasons when you break it all down.Give credit where credit is due. A2AThis is an interesting question, if they ever make a game involving the Primarchs from the 40k universe who would I like to see as the voice actors?I won’t lie, my selections will be significantly influenced by the very popular fan series “If the Emperor Had a Text-To-Speech Device”.Primarchs:Horus: To be honest, I’m not sure who would be best in this case.Leman Russ: Zoran The Bear, I’m going to be honest his voice is the only one that just seems to click from my perspective.Ferrus Manus: I think John DiMaggio would be a great fit for Ferrus.Fulgrim: Nolan North might make a good pick for Fulgrim.Vulkan: Comrade Crimson, after hearing their rendition of Vulkan I honestly cannot think of a better version. The hokey humor and sudden bouts of orcishness is honestly the best possible mix I can think of. Outside of Comrade Crimson I think James Earl Jones might nail the character as well.Rogal Dorn: Super Anchors would be ideal to be honest. The man just perfectly conveys a dense, monotone, and over serious demeanor.Roboute Guilliman: To be honest I think Tim Curry would be both an interesting and best pick. Why do people hate English dubs of anime so much?
@No Lies, Just Love: I did not mean to wrangle your panties in a knot, and yes, your opinion is respected by me to an extent. But I will address all of your lettered points. A: Alright, fair enough. B: That can be understandable and I feel that quite a lot in shows too, but that is where I prefer Japanese. C: Yes, there are tons of horrible pronunciations in English dubs of anime, but that's the same as when in a Japanese dub the VA's try to speak in English and it comes out badly. No one criticizes them for their mispronunciations, so we should not be racked either as native English speakers to mess up on Japanese words at times. Also, Japanese is a faster language and it would sound out of place to say some of their names faster than the words they are speaking.
