How shall we know if you don't tell us anything, like the country you hold the visa for, your basis of stay in the country, to which college you want to apply, the items on the application form you can select from!

In the U.S. the type of visa you must obtain is defined by U.S. immigration law, and relates to the purpose of your travel. There are two main categories of U.S. visas:
Nonimmigrant visas – for travel to the U.S. on a temporary basis.

Immigrant visas – for travel to live permanently in the U.S.

What type of visa do I need if I want to do an internship in the UK?

One of my friends, Tushar, went to the UK for his summer research internship at Brunel University, London in 2017 during his junior undergraduate year. He shared his internship experience with me and upon surfing the web for accurate information from trusted sources, I found the following. There are two types of UK Visas for pursuing an internship in the UK:Short-Term Student Visa: If your internship is less than 6 months duration and it's a part of your curriculum, then you are eligible for 'Short-Term Student Visa'. In the case of Tushar, the research internship was a part of the curriculum and Indian Institute of Technology (our Alma mater) awards credit for successful completion of summer internship.Tier 5 Visa: If you are keen to pursue an internship for your professional development, you can apply for a Tier 5 Visa. However, you should have a 'certified contract' and 'certificate of sponsorship' from your employer in the UK. The maximum period of internship can be 2 years.Footnote:Internship Experience: Tushar Borekar | Indian Institute of Technology

What are the different types of visas?

There are two types of visas: Immigrant Visas and Non-Immigrant Visas.  An immigrant visa is permission to immigrate permanently to the United States. This is commonly known as a green card. Immigrant Visas may be obtained through employment (EB-1, EB-2, EB-3), investment (EB-5), family (IR, F2A, etc) or other special circumstances (i.e. asylum, etc). Holders of immigrant visas /green cards are called Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs).  Typically, one must first be an LPR before he or she can eventually qualify to naturalize as a US citizen. Everything else is pretty much considered a non-immigrant visa (NIV). These are temporary in nature and can be issued for a variety of specific purposes. They are issued for a specific time period and have different validity periods. Here are some examples of NIVs below:  F-1 student visa to study at a particular institutionJ-1 Exchange Visitor VisaH-1B visa for professional skilled workers such as software developers, engineers, etcO-1 visa for individuals with extraordinary ability in the arts, business, sciencesTN Nafta Visa for Canadian and Mexican ProfessionalsE-1 Treaty Trader Visa, based on trade treaty between United States and home countryE-2 Treaty Investor Visa, based on treaty between United States and foreign national's home countryL-1 Intracompany Transferee VisaP-1 Visa for Artists, Athletes and Entertainment GroupsR-1 visa for Religious WorkersI visa for Foreign Professional Journalists, MediaQ Visa for Cultural Exchange ProgramsYou can see why they refer to it as the alphabet soup! :)
