What's the difference between a smart phone and android phone?

A smartphone is any phone with a full HTML internet browser and e-mail capabilities. Android refers to the operating system that the phone uses. It was designed by Google to be a competitor for the iPhone and Blackberry. All Android phones are smartphones. Not all smartphones use Android.

What good smart phones are both available in India and good for senior citizens, e.g., has big icons, large keyboard usable for an elder, et cetera?

All Android devices have similar User Interface. So you can start by gifting her any device which falls within your budget.Great specs may be immaterial to someone, who just wants to start using a smartphone (similar to someone learning to drive for the first time). So focus on the basics, like- does she want a large screen phone for a better view - or a small one which can fit into her hands? My preference (according to budget):1. less than 6k: Infocus M2, Redmi 2 (decent phones at low cost)2. 10k-20k: Samsung Galaxy Grand Max (5.25"), Xperia M4 Aqua (5")3.  20k+: Xperia C4, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (large screens)What you should rather do: Assist her during the course of this transition. Why: For someone who has not directly experienced the mobile revolution, the sudden transition (from buttons to touch interface) can get a bit overwhelming.1. Basics first: Spend the first 1 week, helping her just with the calling functionality (Receiving + Making calls)This is likely to be the most used function, for anyone who has been using feature phones/ qwerty phones.2. Home Button: How the home button can be used at any time to get back to the default view.Exposing someone to familiar territory, makes it less daunting a task for them.3. Messaging:After she feels confident with the above 2- Teach her how to seamlessly type messages to someone and be able to send it- Also how to read messages- Once she is more comfortable with this, you may then introduce WhatsApp to her4. Everything else: The rest like Browsing, Google Search, YouTube, etc may be introduced in phased manner, once she feels confident with calling and messaging functionalities

What is the best Android phone under a budget of 6000 Rs. in the Indian market?

Personally, LYF Flame 1 smartphone priced at Rs 5,599 is a great 4G phone and feels very fluid & easy to use. There are some great pre-installed apps on this android phone & overall, the software has not disappointed me. The display is very pixel-rich and shows a lot of detail. The touch feels great to use. Plus viewing angles are pretty good. Performance-wise, this phone is powered by 1.1. GHz Quad core processor and has an expandable memory up to 32GB. This phone supports HD Calling & has a camera which is great to use in both natural light and low light photography.
