Which Zoo Should I Go To

Do you like to go to the zoo?

I confess, I don't know how to feel about zoos anymore. I love to see the animals, but I don't know anything about them being there. Like, were they just captured out of the wild, bred in captivity, or are they being rehabilitated there? I definitely wouldn't approve of anything being captured, but the latter two seem a bit more acceptable.
I like going to the zoo too, but I think I should feel more guilty about it. Maybe I could talk to the folks that run the zoos and see where their animals come from and why they're there.

Edit: Thanks for the information, Mel!

Why do we go to a zoo?

Good question! It is probably from the times when there wasn’t much connection in the world so when strange animals from different parts of the world were brought to your area (usually by a circus) you would be curious to see the mystical beasts they find.Obviously, the conditions for the animals would be harsh. someone would have set up a stationary zoo that got popular and was a business used in other parts of the world too. when animal rights came into play, zoos were forced to improve the conditions for the animals till you get zoos you see in more economically developed countries today. Now it is seen as a fun day out with the family (usually with young kids) so i guess it is a learning experience for kids.i personally don’t agree with zoos as despite all their efforts, they can never give them the freedom they deserve, though, sometimes it is better for animals that have cruelly been kept captive but saved. they still rely on human care as they have not developed the skills they would need to survive.

How cold is too cold to go to the zoo?

That sounds good. The temp just needs to be warm enough for you. I never go when it is hot out because the animals are always hiding away. Cool days are the best!

How do I get back into the zoo?

Funny story. I was at the zoo and saw some turtles doing it. I looked around to see if there were any kids around and when I saw none I jokingly made some hip thrusting motions (about 3 or 4 times). My friends thought it was funny (you had to be there okay!). Well, some security guard didn't and threw me and my friends out and said not to come back for 3 months! I thought this was a bit of an overreaction. Should I just wait out the three months or actually go and say something?

I'm going to the zoo, what should I wear?

Wear a dark green top. In most zoos the animal care team wear dark green, meaning the people that feed the animals wear wear dark green. The animals that are incapable of facial recognition or that have poor eyesight will often move towards people they think are keepers in the hope of food, so if you choose the right colour you an get a much closer look at many of the animals with minimal effort. if you're super keen you can look on the zoos website and match your shirt to the keepers in the photos.

What do people get out of going to the zoo?

Apart from the exercise, research has shown that visits to zoos can have some very important benefits for people. First, there are health benefits for getting out in nature; in particular it can lower stress levels and the fresh air is of course good for you. For people who live in urban areas without easy access to "getting way out into nature" this can be a critical activity for them.Second, over the last few decades zoos have shifted their emphasis away from showing animals in isolation to showing them in the context of their larger habitat: other animals who live in the same biome, as well as the plants that make up that environment as well and without which the animals couldn't survive. This teaches important lessons about the importance of protecting entire habitats, and not just individual animals that we've come to adore.Third, studies have shown that people are far more likely to take action on conservation and environmental protection when they have made a personal connection with nature (flora and/or fauna). So going to the zoo, seeing animals up close, and hopefully having some chance to interact with them is critically important to driving not just an awareness of conservation issues but also concrete action. Finally, it's important to note that zoos are constantly changing: babies are born, exhibits get added and improved, and the educational materials get better. Even though I spend lots of time at my local zoo, I'm never bored when I go there.
