20:1 rapper-to-producer ratio

Who is the best rap producer this year?

Madlib (Oj Simpson, Stoney Jackson,Vinny Paz, Erykah Badu,Slum VIllage)
Ski (Pilot Talk, 24, Hour Karate School)
Lex Luger (Fabolous,Rick Ross,Kanye West)
Kanye
The Smeezingtons (Bobby Ray,Cee-Lo)
Kno

Out of these...i would have Kno and Kanye last....i think Madlib would be number one and the Smeezingtons and Lex Luger can fight it out for 2nd.

If you could make a rap group with 10 rappers and 3 producers (no duplicates), who would they be?

This has got to be one of the best questions I've been requested to answer.Oh lord well let's see:Producers-Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind (lead producer for Jedi Mind Tricks and worked with Army of the Pharoahs, Canibus, and Slaine)DJ Premier (One half of Gang Starr, produced for many others including Lord Finesse, Heavy D, Mobb Deep, KRS One, Nas, Biggie, Lady of Rage, Mos Def, Rakim, etc. I could go on but that'd be overkill)Eric the Architect (relatively new producer and member of Flatbush Zombies, and has worked with ASAP Mob, Pro Era, The Underachievers, and Action Bronson, all of them members of the ‘Beast Coast’ new school movement from NYC)Now for the rappers, I dont rly know whether to “"spice it up” by mixing subgenres or just stick to the standard 10 rappers I love:1-Big L: The only deceased rapper of all these guys, Big L was an underground legend from the early-late 90s, and had a style mixing mafioso rap and horror rap.2-The Game: In his own words he “brought real west coast gangsta rap” back in the later half of the 00s and spits hot bars except he can't freestyle.3-Cage: He's the guy who some say Eminem ripped his entire s from. Cage had a turbulent home life until ending up in an insane asylum at 17 hooked on PCP. He began his career in the early 90s but didn't release a full length album until 2002.4-Tyler the Creator: Only new school rapper on here (besides Erick, a producer), Tyler is able to mix violence and gore with comedy and has been producing his own tracks since age 16.5-Vinnie Paz: The primary rapper of Jedi Mind Tricks and one of the Kings of Undeground Hip Hop, and his lyrics are a mix of mythology, hardcore, horrorcore, political, etc.6-Brotha Lynch Hung: The originator of Sacramento Rap and one of the few rappers to mix G-Funk and horrorcore.7-Kool G Rap: One of the biggest influences on the entire NYC scene of the 1990s who created Mafioso rap and sacrificed mainstream success to keep his shit real and put other rappers like Nas on the scene.8-Esham: Started his recording/releasing career at age 14 in 1989, and was not only the first Detroit rapper but one of the first to introduce ‘horrorcore’. He and his brother have run a successful independent label for 28+ years now and without Esham’s influence we wouldn't have had Eminem.9-X Raided: Brotha Lynch Hung’s protege, he's been in prison since 1995 but continues to release music “somehow” and is another of the few rappers mixing G-Funk and horrorcore.10-Tech N9ne:

Hip Hop Production: Do rap producers make a good living?

This is a great question. You should watch the recent interview Irv Gotti did on Complex's everyday struggle. He talks about what producers USED to make and the general state of producers now (in his opinion). With that being said, I can give you perspective from the underground level of things. Assuming you're just starting out and below the level of mainstream music.I'll start with an example. I'm sure you've heard of The Race, by Tay K 47. If you haven't, look it up, it has about 60 million views on YouTube (last time I checked). I happen to know the DJ who dropped that song on soundcloud, before it really blew up, it was at 1 or 2 mil plays and the producer decided to sell the exclusive rights to the beat…. For…. Get ready… $400. The sad part is I don't blame him. I know TONS of producers that have songs with 6 figure plays that are getting paid close to nothing. So $400 for an exclusive was probably the most he ever got offered. Most underground music comes out on soundcloud, which has no monetization system. Independent rappers do not pay for beats, which sucks, but why would they when there are so many available online for free. The truth is, being a producer is most likely going to not be lucrative unless you have a charting hit being backed by a major label/independent artist that pays royalties. That is rare, so you have to be extremely creative and entrepreneurial to successfully make a living off of this craft. Here are some ideas:-Look up Traktrain, it's an invitation only platform for producers to sell/lease beats. Rappers cant illegally download the beats you upload. You will need to provide music in the application to join. You can apply and then DM them on twitter to expedite the process.-Use all the platforms you can to put out your beats. Soundcloud, YouTube, Band camp. Do research and find more. Each platform has pros & come, so strategize how/what you release knowing it could be stolen and downloaded for free. MARKETING.That's all I can really say. I'm a producer by hobby and I've been paid for my beats at times. It's a nice little side income. But if you wanna do this for a living you need to treat it like you're the CEO, head of marketing, PR rep, Brand Manager and any other huge role you can think of of your own company.Good luck!

Who are some good rappers that can sing?

Thank you for your A2A!Males:Kanye West is one of the better vocalist rappers I have ever heard. Having background in gospel or choir music helped West with writing his music and his tremendous vocal arrangements.Another example of an outstandingly good vocalist and rap star includes André 3000 from Outkast. You can obviously hear him singing away on his releases, for example the track Roses from Speakerboxx... It's my belief he coordinates backing vocals for his tracks as well as provides most of the duo’s vocal releases.Females:Lauryn Hill-Marley is incredible a vocalist and everyone needs to listen to her if you can. She's beyond good, she's just far and away so good with her production and performance to boot.Missy Elliot is also a wonderful vocalist.

What are some good lesser known jazz rap albums/songs/producers?

There are a few I know of that have a jazzier sound even if they’re not outright jazz rap. The tracks I link may not be the best example of their jazziest sounds but I’m trying to find my favorite tracks that are also similar to rap with jazz/soul samples.Blu & Exile - “Maybe One Day”Flying Lotus ft. Kendrick Lamar - “Never Catch Me”J Dilla - “Stop” (J Dilla samples a lot of soul music in his works)Eyedea & Abilities - “Paradise” (E&A don’t do a lot with jazz/soul in their music but I like it when they do)MF Doom - “Doomsday”A Tribe Called Quest - “Electric Relaxation”Lupe Fiasco - “Life, Death, and Love from San Francisco”Gang Starr - “Mass Appeal”9th Wonder - “Hard to Choose” (One of my favorite producers, up there with J Dilla in my mind)Pete Rock & CL Smooth - “T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You)”J Cole - “Wet Dreamz” (I’m not a big J Cole fan, but this track was too good to pass up.)Madlib - “Slim’s Return” (It wouldn’t be a good list without paying tribute to Madlib.)BadBadNotGood and Ghostface Killah did a collaboration album recently. Doesn’t get more jazz rap than a jazz trio combining with a rapper:I know the list was all over the place, but I hope you found something that resembles what you’re looking for. A lot of these are artists that consistently produce jazz rap or something close to it, so I tried to link to a track that I personally like and that shows what they can do within the genre.
