Why did McCain choose Sarah Palin??
I think all we can do is speculate since the people in on the decision process aren't really talking. I personally feel its because she doesn't offend anyone in the Republican base. All the names we know had something that made them unacceptable to the right wing base of the part. Rudy Juliani and Tom Ridge are pro-choice. Mitt Romney is a Mormon. To many Southern Baptists, a Mormon is just a Muslim with shave. Mike Hukabee had the opposite problem. He was so on the religious right that independent voters would start going scared. Palin is pro-life. She is a woman which helps snag some anti-Obama independent women. She is not from the South. While Alaska is a right leaning state, it is not considered a religious right state. She also has a very limited track record. If she had been in politics fro 30 years, she would have 1000's of decisions to defend. However, being a newcommer, she only has to defend the fact that she has almost nothing to defend. One thing gets old very quickly. The American people have very short attention spans.

While the ultimate decision was Obama's, the vetting team was responsible for bringing the initial list of twenty people down to a short list of people that would make a good fit on the ticket and more importantly to Obama possible performance as an actual VP.Some of the points that Marc, Jon, Ian, and Charlotte made were all covered in relations to Hillary. While Hilary made the initial cut to six, she did not make the next cut to three. Plouffe observed that Obama was less concerned about what had happened during the campaign, but he did have an issue with the idea of Bill Clinton being part of the picture. Plouffe explains Obama's decision, "At the end of the day, Obama decided that there were just too many complications outweighing the potential strengths” of selecting Hillary.In modern presidential politics the VP slot is less about the ability for the person to deliver a state out of 50. In fact a few VP candidates in the last several elections have not carried their home state. It's more about what they bring to the campaign trail for voters, Biden's strength was his foreign policy experience being Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. His personal story had "some blue collar appeal as a middle-class kid” with a close connection to Pennsylvania. His performance in the primary debates made the campaign feel confident he would do well in the one VP debate that usually occurs. Ultimately Biden during the final three interviews made a strong case for his selection that influenced David Plouffe to give him as the recommendation to Obama. The rest will have to wait for Obama memoirs.

That may have been a good response if Clinton was a staunch conservative, however, she is commonly referred to as very liberal and socialistic. Given that comparison by Obama about himself and Clinton, does that mean that he is a liberal too. In fact, given the evidence of his voting record, is that not a fact?
