Paulie is also one of the best, he and Cotto use their jab as primary weapons not necessarily to set something up. GGG has the best jab to close the distance, u dont see it often but he does it best. It’s a habit for them to throw a right hand from the get go, but once you’re trained and develop your left hand you unlock a powerful weapon to add to your arsenal. A boxers jab can hit harder than a regular person’s right hand at times. Sonny Liston’s jab was said to knock people out. There are all kinds of jabs. Ali had the best jab in history according to most boxing analyst. His was a flickering heavy jab that induced a lot of swelling and as the fight progressed you were left blind and unable to continue fighting. Some have stiff jabs that have body weight behind them when thrown and are able to stop a fighter in their tracks, or even possibly knock them down. The flicker jab was utilized by some of the greatest boxers of all times, and the best ever: Muhammad Ali. Why isn't it used today?
Is boxing in decline ? You tell me…….but judging by the number of great techniques that are no longer in use then you would pessimistically say that it is a sport on the slide. But this doesn’t tell the full story- Ali was always unconventional & did many things in a boxing ring which were “left of centre”. He could afford to as he was blessed with freak genetics & had tremendous handspeed. To use the “flicker jab” to good effect requires great handspeed, great reflexes & the hands held low. If you don’t have the correct tools then the punch can be too risky & becomes a liability.Essentially what is the flicker jab? A quick jab/ flick that comes from a low angle trajectory- so it is intended to both confuse, distract & upset the balance of the intended target. Of course the punch coming from low down has the element of surprise also. Ali & other great fighters such as Thomas Hearns used this punch to great effect by flick-jabbing to the body - thereby distracting their opponent’s attention. In essence the flick jab is a high level “diversionary” tactic & the follow-up punches are the damaging shots.Here we see the one & only “Hitman” Thomas Hearns, primed, cocked & ready to pounce. His hands held characteristically low- is he gonna flick- jab to the body or head or is he gonna throw that lethal right cross as a lead……who knows? And Roberto Duran certainly didn’t know as he was flattened by probably the most potent “unseen” right cross in boxing history which was thrown immediately after a “flicker” jab to the body. Terrific stuff from Hearns-arguably the most prolific offensive boxer in middle division history.I think Loma is one guy who does use a type of “flicker” jab but his is called more of a “circling” jab apparently. But ultimately the “flicker” jab is a high level tactic which requires speed, hand eye coordination & a good reach. The reach is important.
