Is Queen Elizabeth II the most recognizable person in the world?
My friend and I were arguing about this point recently: he says President Obama is the most recognizable person on the planet but I'm convinced it's Queen Elizabeth. As a test, we agreed to select a typical photo of the Queen (Crown, dress, white gloves, looking regal) and a typical photo of Obama (standing at podium, dressed in smart suit and tie, American flag in the background, looking very presidential) and show them to my cousins and their friends at a children's birthday party. There were 15 children present, aged between 5 and 11; all of them recognized the Queen immediately, but 4 of them were unsure about who Obama was - one even guessed Will Smith! My friend says this test proves nothing, but I'm still convinced that it would be difficult to find anyone anywhere in the world who, when shown a photo of the Queen, would not recognize her - I mean her face even appears on banknotes, coins, and stamps in numerous countries around the world. There's no doubting her image is pretty ubiquitous! Anyway, we decided to refer our disagreement to this forum to see what the general consensus is on the matter.
