Who In Nc Has .22 Caliber Birdshot

Can you kill a full-grown grizzly bear with a shotgun?

If anything bleeds enough, then anything can die. Fred Bear killed a Grizzely with a recurve bow and a broad head arrow! This was bordering on insanity in my humble opinion. At least he was backed up by two other men sporting .416 Rigbys. BUT, is it advisable to use small caliber weapons or a bow? Heck no! That is a good way to die a horrible death! I saw a grizzely get shot right through the heart with a .300 Winchester magnum (that's a big gun for those of you that don't know guns) and it ran full speed 100 yards Before expiring. Had it run our way it could have easily killed us since we were only 55 yyards away from it When it was shot. The shotgun with slugs is ones of the best guns one can use for protection from an attacking bear. The slow moving heavy lead slug has good penetration and is not so prone to ricochet. One rarely should aim for a bear’s head as it’s skull shape is prone to a to ricochet. If one chooses to defend themselves from a bear with a handgun then it should be a .44 magnum (or preferably larger) with a hard cast bullet (No hollow points because bears can take shock without much problem. ) One should shoot to break the bear down and then attempt to kill it such as shooting for the shoulder and then through the heart/lung area. There was a bird hunter that was attacked by a grizzly bear here in Montana a few years back, and all he had was birdshot in his shotgun. He had no chance to break the bear down. He shot the bear as it was charging in the face and blinded it and continuously kept shooting at close range with his shotgun at its neck until it was dead. It Took many shots for the spare to finally die. This man was lucky and wise for he knew the bird shot pellets had very limited penetration. He was also an experienced birdhunter because he continuously kept reloading at a very high rate of speed. I suppose when one has an enraged grizzly bear at close quarters in front of them it is a huge motivation to keep reloading at a high rate of speed!

If I shoot at doves that land on power lines with a 12 Gauge, will it damage the power line?

easy answer. walk towards them until they fly off the powerline, then take your shot. its safer and more sporting. whatever you do, dont do something stupid like use a 22 or a pellet gun. both are illegal methods of take for doves. anyone who has been through hunter safety or read their regulation book ought to know that.

eferrel: its legal to shoot pheasants on the ground in nebraska. its legal to shoot waterfowl on the ground.

What is a 22 caliber bird shot?

Sometimes referred to as Ratshot or SnakeShot. Here is an example.Federal® Game-Shok™ No. 12 Lead Bird Shot .22 LR 25-Grain Rimfire Ammunition | AcademyBasically it is like a .22 Long Rifle Blank round but it also contains small lead bb’s. It is not very effective against a point target. It spreads out like shotgun, being more effective over an area. These rounds are to be used when aiming at something like a running rat would not be as effective with a single point, but more effective when covering a area with bb’sI would suggest a .410 gauge shotgun would be better for this purpose, but .22 LR can easily be shot from a handgun like the Ruger MK III, which would be easier to carry in the field. The noise would likely be significantly be less than a .410 when coming from a .22 LR.I am not sure I would use these in my guns though at least the ones that I like. Blanks are notoriously dirty rounds. They can also cause user to possibly become complacent with the safety rules. These are not blanks though and should be treated pretty much as any other round. Deadly.Disclaimer I have never used these, but I have shot blanks.

In an open space, like a park, if someone starts shooting, do you have a better chance of surviving if you run or get down on the ground? If you run he could shoot you in the back, if you get down, he could walk up to you and shoot you.

On the cool morning of October 27, 1995, the 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment mustered on the football field at Towle Stadium, Fort Bragg, NC. Approximately 2,200 paratroopers stood in formation preparing for a 5-mile unit run. As 4/325 A.I.R had begun marching down the track to begin running, there were two distinct pops. Many thought it was the sound of a starter pistol. I remember looking to my immediate left, and could see a couple members of that Battalion still in formation jumping around. I thought to myself, only idiots would bring firecrackers to formation, but what did I know, I was a brand new Private, and it was my very first brigade run in the United States Army. After the first two pops there was a 2 or 3 second lull, and then a louder much more distinct bang. It was the sound of an AR-15 firing, we all knew that sound and we all dove to the ground and either began low-crawling or running for our lives. I low-crawled off the track and took cover behind where the track dropped off to the grass. I watched as a Soldier was running, his arms went spread eagle and he hit the ground due to being shot in the back. A disgruntled Soldier, Sergeant William J. Kreutzer, decided he would take out the Chain of Command for wrongs he felt they had made against him. He opened up with 2 shots from .22 Caliber hunting rifle, and then transitioned to his AR-15. He had an estimated 750 rounds of 5.56 ball and tracer ammunition and he also had a 9mm pistol. He shot 19 people that morning, Killing Major Stephen M. Badger. Kreuzter was stopped by three passing Special Forces Soldier’s who happened to be running by the stadium and saw Kreutzer’s muzzle flashes in the woodline. We were all unarmed and ran, Major Badger trying to protect Soldiers, ran towards the shooter, and ended up giving his life in that final act of valor. Running away caused 19 people to get shot. The truth is had any one of us (we were all trained Infantryman or Soldiers) had firearms on us, we could have ended that incident as quickly as it began. So to answer your question, no I will not run, I will engage the shooter with well aimed fire and try to protect as many innocent lives as possible, even if it means giving my own like Major Badger did for us that day!

Do you need to have a gun permit to buy ammunition? Or more specifically, do you have to prove that you have a registered firearm for the ammunition you're purchasing?

Generally no. Just like if you want to buy say a 1000 rolls of toilet paper cause it’s a good sale you don’t have to prove you have a toilet. You can buy a set of rims for a BMW without proving you have a BMW, although to actually use then do to bolt patterns and sizes you might need a BMW to be able to use then. You can buy Muriatic acid without proving you have a pool. There are certain types of ammo that are restricted such as armo piercing. But for standard full metal jacket or hollow points that would be no you don’t have to have any permit although they shall generally check your ID.Now California did just change in Jan 1st 2018 that you can’t buy ammo in line anymore and have it shipped to your home anymore. It has to be shipped to an FFL, not all FFL’s even do that and the ones that do can charge whatever they want for their service. Some online places stopped dealing with Ca. because of that. That law does not cut down on crime in any way. What it does do is make it more inconvenient for the law abiding gun owners that now can’t save money by using bulk online prices. That adds up as many of us go through 500–1000 rounds a month for practice. There is talk about ammo licenses and even quantity restrictions. Of course neither shall cut down on crime in any way. In fact quantity restrictions might create a new blackmarket to make criminals out of law abiding citizens.

What weapons would you take for an extended stay in a remote location??

I live in Alaska and I like your list except the 44 spl, a 44 mag would be better.

Alaska has many different environments, from dense old growth forests, river bottoms so thick with vegetation that you can’t see a animal 10 feet away, to vast open treeless tundra where you can see for miles. With that in mind you need a rifle that will stop a griz or brown bear and still reach out for long shots. So the 8mm would work ok but a 30-06 would be disputability better and a 300 win mag would be great!
Any 12 ga shot gun with the right barrel/chokes would allow for bear protection with slugs and hunting waterfowl, game birds and small game with the right shot.
A 22 pistol or rifle would be nice as its cheap to shoot and ammo weighs little for small game. I carry a Ruger standard or mark 1 22 pistol for small game and for trapping. It goes every where with me in a shoulder holster.
The bull dog 44 spl is a fine handgun for any critter up to a black bear with the right ammo at very close range but lacks the power in a griz attack. For that reason I carry a Ruger super Redhawk or Blackhawk in 44 magnum loaded with heavy 320 hard cast lead bullets in a cross over shoulder holster. The cross over holster allows me to draw either standing or sitting and tends to gather less debris than a hip holster. This is nice if you have to take a dump in the woods and are caught with your pants down as a bear attacks. Any handgun you can handle larger than a 44 mag would be even better.
The .223 would not be much use I hate to say. Bear, moose, caribou require a larger round. You would find it drawing dust from little use other than hunting fur bearers such as fox, coyote and the like. And a 25-06 would reach further for those animals.

Reading the others posts, it seems some are preparing for combat not survival. In remote areas of Alaska you may not see a human for months and if you do they will not be out to kill you. They would be more inclined to warm by your fire and share some tales and coffee instead. It’s the wild animals one should be concerned about, like being drug out of your tent at night by a bear.

No matter what hunting I do here, I carry my long gun, my 44 mag and a 6 inch barrel 22 pistol. This has worked for me for many years. If I get skunked looking for a moose, at least I can bring back small game for camp meat with the 22 pistol.
