Why is the Japanese women's soccer team world class while the Japanese men's soccer team is very weak?
The Nadeshiko grew in a market less saturated with talent. Like the US women, they benefited from a situation where the best girls sometimes played with boys. They’ve had a pro league for decades. Also, like the US women, when they were successful, the public showed interest and were fully supportive of women’s soccer.That said, the Japanese women were not always successful. They performed poorly in international tournaments for a long stretch, same as the men. We’re really in a “golden” period where there are several very talented players on the national team. We will see if there is now a legacy of strong women’s soccer in Japan or whether the stretch of great play over the last decade was a fluke.

Who is the best Handball player of the world?
In reference to all the other answers, handball IS a real sport, added to the Olympics in the 1970's [one version for women and one for women.] Many like to think of handball as a mix between basketball and soccer, where a ball is dribbled down a court, and shot at a goalie much like in soccer - except you use your hands. There is an International Handball Federation, and as of February 2007, the IHF reports to have 159 member federations representing approximately 1,130,000 teams and a total of 31 million players, trainers, officials and referees, thank you very much. I think Anita Gorbicz [Hungarian] was the 2005 top female handball player, and she is a very skilled athelete. Anja Andersen [Denmark] is also a very talented handball player, also a female. She was the 1997 World Handball Player. I also looked up David Chapman, but on wikipedia all it says is that "he is regarded as the top player of the sport." But the current top player on the USHA rankings is Emmett Peixoto of Watsonville, California. It is very hard to find international rankings and such because handball is a relatively unknown sport, especially in the States. I don't know about other parts of the world, because I don't live there... Also, I'd like to point out that it is a team sport, so that makes individual performance even more undermined. European teams generally do well, though.
