Who is your "favourite" dictator, and why?

Great question! My wife finds it hilarious I have a favourite dictator, but for some unknown reason I have made a study of them for many years. Strangely many of them do not actually come from the country which they come to lead. My assessment of them is as dictators. They were all truly horrible people and did despicable acts. The proto modern dictator is surely Napoleon Bonaparte. He was the archetype who set the standard and really invented the role. He combined military and social oppresion with a personality cult. He also was not French but Corsican. He was defeated by the British and died in captivity a failure.Mussolini was in power for a long time, and invented fascism. This combined with his personality cult made him an inspiration for Hitler. He was a showman with his oratory and gaudy pomp. His death at the hands of partisans ended his rule and marked his ultimate defeat and failure.Hitler had 12 years as a dictator. Again He was not from the country he ruled as he was Austrian and not German. He destroyed Germany with his madness and brought about incredible ethnic and social genocide. He used his cronies to compete to please him and left the details to underlings. Again he was a showman with his oratory and showy rituals. His death by suicide amongst the ruins of Germany and his detestation by all decent Germans mark his absolute failure.Stalin slowly emerged as a supreme dictator of the Soviet Union following the death of Lenin. Thought of as a nonentity by his rivals he managed to out manoeuvre them to emerge as the unchallenged dictator. He also was not Russian but an ethnic Georgian. Despite his weakening of Soviet forces prior to the 2nd world war the USSR emerged victorious. Unlike Hitler and Mussolini he was a master of detail and a poor orator. Like Hitler he was responsible for millions of deaths. The Soviet Union after the 2nd world war ended as one of the 2 world superpowers. Stalin died from a stroke after many years in power as dictator. He was so feared his staff were afraid to enter his room as he left instructions to not be disturbed. He had a massive state funeral attended by world leaders. As such in these terms he has to be considered the most successful dictator. I think therefore he has to be my favourite. I still detest him though.

Can you share a photo of your favorite dictator?

Emperor ClaudiusClaudius was the fourth emperor of Rome and was basically forced into power by the Praetorian Guard after a coup in which they assassinated Enperir Caligula and his close family. Claudius was known as a weak man, constantly the butt of jokes and disabled (possibly a sufferer cerebral palsy or Tourette’s syndrome), that’s why he was out in power, to serve as a puppet. As soon as he was put in power something amazing happened. His disabilities became much less severe, he proved to be a compliant and strong leader. It’s thought that he put on an act for a lot of his life, and the act did indeed seem to help him avoid a number of untimely ends (he’d have probably been killed along with Caligula if he was seen as a threat). He proved to be a great emperor, overseeing extensive building works, annexed Britain (started by Julius Caesar) and expanded the empire in general. He also comes across as a nice, funny guy, not a monster and not god-incarnate. He loved to get the crowds roaring at gladiatorial games with edgy jokes and by holding his son Britannicus up in the air, there’s also one occasion where he has to cut shirt a court session as a fat kid sat on a bench which snapped and he couldn’t stop laughing as a result. Out of most of times emperors he sounds like the type of guy it would he fun to have a drink with!Sadly he was assassinated by Nero, as was his son Britannicus. It generally makes me sad that the two were killed as Claudius clearly loved his son and was keen for him to be the next emperor. Perhaps Rome could have avoided the terrible reign of Nero and the disasters it sparked if they’d have lived…
