Earthquakes can range in strength from very mild to catastrophic. Why would a scientific model that simulates seismic activity and the consequences be beneficial?
It would reveal the epicenter of earthquakes.
It would reduce or prevent earthquake activity.
It would guide city planning and minimize damage.
It would warn of earthquake activity so people could evacuate.

What is the likelihood of a future catastrophic earthquake in the southeast United States?

The risk of major earthquake in the Southeast of the USA is high.A series of earthquakes hit the Mid west in the 1800’s The Great Midwest Earthquake of 1811 3 earthquakes with a magnitude over 7.5ML within days of each other. Geological survey reveals that there have been numerous others over the millennia. An ancient and failed rift valley system sits in the middle of the continent, aligned approximately north to south. Lake Superior sits within it. The rest is dry. Consequently, the earth’s crust has been pulled apart here, leaving vast blocks of land called Grabens suspended by their own cracks in it. Occasionally they slip downward. Other faults have developed to compliment the rift system. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that the risk of another New Madrid-scale catastrophe in the next 50 years is about 7 to 10 percent. The risk of a smaller, though still devastating, 6.0 earthquake in the next 50 years is 25 to 40 percent.Version:1.0 StartHTML:000000214 EndHTML:000065000 StartFragment:000064636 EndFragment:000064892 StartSelection:000064636 EndSelection:000064892 SourceURL:https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world...

What about earthquakes causes them to create catastrophic damage?

The amount of energy released by earthquakes is what makes them so dectructive. There is an analogy that teachers often make. It is called the Elastic-rebound theory. When we bend a stick of wood slightly, it accumulates some strain. As we keep bending it, the strain that the piece of wood acumulates, increases. There comes a point when the stick can't take it anymore and it breaks into two. At this point, all the energy that you put into the stick to bend it is released. Just replace the stick with rocks and that's how you should imagine earthquakes. The forces that bend rocks are incomprehensibly large. These same forces move entire continents around like a child moves toy cars. It is the strain that bent rocks accumulate that are released suddenly with catastrophic effects.Let's come to magnitude now. When Earthquakes release enrgy, they shake the ground. Magnitude is one way to measure how shaky an earthquake is. Magnitude, however is not a linear scale. The energy released by the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 has been compared to the energy released by a magnitude 3 earthquake. The bomber killed 168 people and damaged buildings within a two mile radius. The earthquake that caused the Tsunami that triggered the Fukushima DIsaster in Japan in 2011 was of magnitude 9. So, was the earthquake thrice as shaky as the bombing? NO. Magnitudes are expressed on a logarithmic sclae to the base ten. So, an earthquake of magnitude 3 is ten times as shaky as an earthquake of magnitude 2. An earthquake of magnitude 4 is ten times as shaky as an earthquake of magnitude 3 and 100 times as shaky as an Earthquake of magnitude 2. The earthquake, therefore, was A MILLION TIMES as strong as the bombing. This is what makes Earthquakes so catastrophic.Note: My use of the sord shaky was highly unscientific. ALso, the picture of what happened in Fukushima was taken from BEFORE AND AFTER: Unreal Pictures From The Japan Tsunami. It was the Tsunami that caaused the destruction. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed. So, one can unscientifically assume that the destruction that the tsunami cause would have been the same as the destruction that the Earthquake itself would have caused.

Can a Catastrophic Earthquake/Tsunami Hit California??

Ok so that devastating Earthquake and Tsunami that hit Japan, got me thinking on whether if that can happen here, in California????

i know like Japan we "supposedly" have earthquake proof buildings and houses, but looking at footages from what just occurred in Japan, the Tsunami just dragged Houses and Cars like toys!
and not to mention that the Tsunami did hit the California Shores, up in Crescent City, which severely damaged a lot of Boats in a harbor there.

so can my question is are we likely to see that Here?????
and i think in Japan the earthquake occured in the ocean right?
well say here, theres a earthquake here, and if whether if it's in the ocean (idk if that can happen there) or inland if the earthquake is big in magnitude can we see the same result, Tsunami, and the damage????
Btw i live in Central California, im two hours away from SF. and i have felt one here, but it has to be a big quake in the bay area to feel it here.
it is scary noticing more frequent destructive earthquakes.
so any chances??????

What will happen if a catastrophic earthquake occurs in Hong Kong?

First of the chances of an earthquake in Hong Kong are very rare, lived there for many years didn’t even feel a tremor. However if there was an earthquake, depending on the intensity and duration the consequences can range from mild to severe. If there was massive earthquake lets say a 7–10 magnitude, it would be devastating. HK buildings aren’t designed to survive earthquakes (becasue of the small risk). HK has the most skyscrapers of any city in the world, and you sure better expect some of the com crashing down, for such a dense city one toppled building will knock another down and this leads to a domino effect. Skyscrapers on the side of the mountains on Hong Kong island would come crashing down, many deaths, many injuries, emergency services would be stretched and people would be trapped for days.

Is a seven year series of catastrophic events like earthquakes, hurricanes, nuclear attacks and volcanic eruptions really going to begin in a few days?

Don’t tell me: You’ve been reading such amazing pieces of work as….The Man Who Said the World Would End in September Predicts a New Doomsday DateDoomsday to begin on October 15; world to witness 7 years of natural calamities, claim conspiracy theoristsEnd of the world 'to start on October 15' with seven years of horror…and probably from the guy’s website too?If so, allow me to bring you back into reality for a moment. If you read the ends of those articles, you’d know that actual government and scientific agencies are calling bulls**t on Meade’s “predictions.”His claims are not based in reality. After all, Nibiru doesn’t exist, and we haven’t found anything suggesting that everything will go to Hell in October.Plus, people have been predicting the end of days for years. And yet, we’re still here. For what it’s worth, we’re never really given a date in the Bible. We’re told of what will happen, but not the when. (At least, IIRC. If an actual theologian can see if I’m correct, that’d be great.)So, don’t listen to Meade. He’s a dumbarse, and one who doesn’t understand basic science. Why It's Unlikely the World Will End on September 23https://www.washingtonpost.com/n...(The two above are actually about September 23rd, but they only cement my case.)

Could a catastrophic earthquake in California ("The Big One") be set off by nuking elsewhere on the rim of fire?

That would be highly unlikely - and also impossible to deliberately arrange.I know that ‘nuclear bombs’ are powerful and immense in human terms - but seriously, the earth’s power in volcanoes and earthquakes makes bombs look negligible. You could probably set off some relatively minor LOCAL action, by setting off a bomb right on top of an EXISTING fault zone. That’s about it.Besides the human costs -a) it wouldn’t work andb) it would be pointless.

Could the predicted catastrophic California Earth Quake cause Yellowstone supervolcano to errupt?

No, the often predicted “catastrophic California earthquake” cannot cause the Yellowstone super volcano to erupt, any more than pumping nuclear weapons, like the shells in a pump shotgun, directly into the Yellowstone caldera, will cause it to erupt. If its not ready to erupt, IT WILL NOT ERUPT.Nature follows no one’s schedule - not with volcanos - not with earthquakes.

How do you know your area is prone to earthquake?

If you are in the US, check the USGS pageSeismic Hazard Maps and Site-Specific Dataor the local state emergency management agency. For example, California has CalOES and Washington State had the WA-EMD.Elsewhere in the world, you might check the maps at the old Global seismic hazard assessment program, compiled by ETH in Zurich, for a good idea.index
