Who are some great female singers in the rock/heavy rock/pop genres?
As I so often do I’ll put forward someone I consider a great unknown: Valerie Carter*. She started as a backup singer for LA based artists like Little Feat and Linda Ronstadt. Eventually she recorded an album, Just A Stone’s Throw Away, in 1977. The record has an unbelievable list of contributors including several members of Little Feat, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Verdine White from Earth, Wind and Fire and John Sebastion. It covers styles from folky pop to funk rave-ups. Her cover of “Ooh Child” really shows off her pipes-The followup, Wild Child in ’78 isn’t the absolute gem that her debut is, but it’s pretty damned good. It was a more straight forward pop/rock affair. Still, as the following song reveals, she could muster formidable power with that voice. Here’s “Lady in the Dark”-Valerie wouldn’t play the music industry games that were necessary to make it in the business. It just wasn’t in her. She passed on in 2017 largely forgotten. But damn, the woman could sing. In fact, it’s said that the Jackson Browne song “That Girl Could Sing” is about her. I’ll leave you with the final track from “Stone’s Throw”, a lovely, introspective jazz tune written by Lowell George and Valerie.*Anyone who follows me will not be surprised by this answer. I’ve been carrying the torch for this woman for years.

Any good bands with a female singer?
No Doubt is one of my favourite bands ever, early ska/ska punk with Gwen Stefani on lead vocals (when she used to dress like a guy). A couple of good songs would be: Makin' Out Detective Spiderwebs Just a Girl Underneath It All Don't Speak Another band is Fleetwood Mac, it's not a female singer in ALL of their songs, but in quite a few it is. Everywhere The Chain Sweet Little Lies There are more but I can't think whilst The Chain is playing in my head. Also try a duo called Tegan and Sara. I can't praise this band enough, I absolutely love them. Listen to: Alligator Hop a Plane Back In Your Head Nineteen Walking With a Ghost Finally: Try Pat Benatar, great voice, real kickass 80's champ with fantastic music. Listen to Heartbreaker or Hit Me With Your Best Shot.

Why is rock music so male-centric and heteronormative?
To get good at being a rock band you need to spend thousands of hours in a small sweaty practice room writing and recording songs. It takes years and years to get to be any good at it.Then if you do get good at it, you need to start playing live and touring. The Small venues in the “rock” circuit are know as “toilet venues”. They are horrible dirty places to be in. When you start touring it means travelling in a shitty van, sleeping on people’s floors, probably parting to much, eating terrible food and having absolutely no money ever.In my experience, very few women are willing to put up with this sort of lifestyle. It’s a rough and dirty way to live, and your band is almost certainly going to fail before you get anywhere.Never underestimate the hard work it takes to get a band off the ground. It completely takes over your life and you have to do it at the expense of everything else in your life. Very few women are willing to put up with the horrible lifestyle that comes with it.I have never heard the term heteronormative before, I had to google it, and I think it is ridiculous, so I’m choosing not to answer that part of the question.
