Who Thinks That Yahoo Answers Has Been Acting Like A Piece Of Crap Can

Why is my Quora feed turning into Yahoo Answers for dating questions, and is there anything that can be done about it?

I am not concerned about your specific example, provided that the bots catch it and put that question into, for example, the “Dating” topic. Why? I would never subscribe to the “Dating” topic, so it should not appear in my feed. However, there are plenty of situations in which the spirit of your concern applies. For example, ridiculous questions in the football or university topics (to which I do subscribe), such as:“Can I become Messi or Ronaldo even though I am 20 years old and only started playing football?”,“Can I get into Stanford if I am a “B” student and have almost no extracurricular activities?”,“Why am I not popular in my university sorority even though I am a really nice person?” or“If I cheat on my exams and don’t get caught, then is it right that I get into Harvard because I am just being resourceful?.I have a solution.First, require that everyone disclose a full profile with age.Second, enforce an age limitation, perhaps 16 years old.Third, most importantly, eliminate usage of the “anonymous” function or reduce it exclusively to questions that the bots are programmed to recognise as sensitive. For example, in my ideal world, Quoran’s would not be allowed to use “anonymous” for questions about food, football, homework, exercise, etc. The use of anonymous would be used exclusively for topics such as net worth, wages, medical conditions, drug addiction, etc. where anonymous is a likely a useful and applicable function. The third proposal is most important for this reason: If I think someone is acting immature, crazy, trollish or otherwise presenting useless Q&A (which does not rise to the level of reportable), then you can mute them provided they are not “Anonymous”. Under its current configuration, Quora does not allow me to mute “Anonymous”, which is the main problem. In my experience most of the problem questions come from “Anonymous”, so I simply cannot stop their crap from coming. In my experience, the more stupid then Q&A, the more likely it is from “Anonymous” rather than someone with a disclosed name. My solution is to stop allowing the unfettered use of the anonymous function or stop it entirely. If Quorans are forced to use their names except in limited situations, it will reduce the crap Q&A because I can mute the immature, crazy, trollish or otherwise Quorans.

What would happen if Yahoo! Answers and Quora merged?

It’s already happening as we speak!I know it’s hard to believe but such a fusion is taking place as we speak. Although, that merger isn’t taking place in the conventional sense. Quora and Yahoo never had any such deals as far as I know. So why am I saying that it’s already happening?Well! What I am trying to say is that Quora is trying to become more Yahoo Answers like in nature. Remember the recent changes? Remember this happening?I was as outraged as your average outraged Quora member when question details were removed. However, I didn’t understand just how bad the problem was until something happened to me recently. What happened was that I was going through certain technical subjects and came across a few questions that are very interesting. Then it occurred to me that Quora has a lot of STEM and philosphy people who’d be able to explore the ideas further if I shared it here.So what happened next? Well, the absence of the question details made it extremely hard for me to present my case with adequate details. None of the questions were things you could just throw out there and expect a person to answer it satisfactorily. So I just gave up and wondered if I should instead be asking questions like “If there was a battle between tea and coffee, who do you think would win?”.The thing is that there’s a lot of us who prefer online forums to discuss certain technical topics where we can write about the issues and present our cases properly. Quora wasn’t as good as that but at least had the feature that enabled us to at least attempt at addressing complex issues on this platform. What did that mean for Quora? It meant that people who like discussing such complex issues didn’t have to spend their time on forums. They could simply create an account here and enjoy everything from technical issues requiring some elaboration all the way to things like “Why I don’t like celebrity X” type of things. The removal of the question details turned Quora back into another question and answer site for me. Now if you add the problem of the abuse of the report feature by trolls or people trying to silence you, I really don’t think that we are that far away from becoming Yahoo Answers. As the site grows, these abuses will scale up too. Add the fact that we are now being slowly guided towards only discussing simpler issues and you’ll soon realize that we are probably almost certainly headed towards that future.

Is Quora just a glorified Yahoo! Answers?

Sure, in the sense that a Tesla is just a glorified golf cart.  At the most basic level, they both work on the same principle, but one has design, functionality, capability and even looks that's far beyond the other.   The problem here is that you have two competing definitions of the word "glorified".  It can mean something that's given glory for no good reason, or it can mean something that's been made glorious.  If you mean the first, then no, Quora isn't given glory for no good reason.  It's far more prestigious because it has a great deal more to offer.  The differences between the sites may be subtle (some are, and some aren't) but they cumulatively make a huge difference in the user experience (at least, they did in my case). If you're using the second definition, then the answer is yes.  Quora took the basic concept behind Yahoo Answers and they made it into something glorious.  And good for them.

Why is Quora more popular than Yahoo Answers? What elements make it the more popular Q&A site?

A couple of years back, early 2015 I guess, I wanted to know about the basics of big data and its importance in industry.I googled “What is Big data”The first link popped up was Wikipedia - I opened in a new tab and set it aside. The second link was from Yahoo answers. I opened and was looking for some useful information. There were answers like:I was confused, irritated and most of the answers didn’t answer the question. The next link which popped was from Quora.I could find answers like this:Answer was by Balaji Viswanathan (பாலாஜி விஸ்வநாதன்) sir. That is the moment I followed him and read his other answers too! And that was the moment i decided not to refer yahoo answers for anything in future.Unlike Yahoo answers, Why was the answer better? It summed up all the information - technical explanation with real life examplesPictures made it easier for me to connect with answerThe credential “Ran a Big data company” made me believe the answer is from someone trustworthy.Upvotes and comments of appreciation from people in related field made me feel secured about the answerComments were healthy and was debating its future application. So, with no further discussions, Quora is always better than Yahoo answers.
