Who was the best president in US history?

There have been several polls taken among historians who study this kind of stuff, and almost all have put Lincoln, Washington, and FDR at the top of the list. Almost universally Lincoln is recognized as the best. Not only did he hold the Union together during, by far, it's most turbulent period, he influenced people who hated him, didn't want to fight, didn't mind slavery, and wanted to see the Union dissolve. Lincoln manged Washington DC, the War, and Politics with a skill unmatched in history. Plus he was our most eloquent speaker. Washington and the Founding Fathers may have given a head and body to our nation, but Lincoln give it It's soul.

There is far more discussion regarding the worst. Most people put Hoover down due to his complete ineptitude at handling the Depression. Nixon is a mixed bag, brilliant at politics and diplomacy, but insanely miserable judgment. Harrison was president for about 30 days. His one distinction is having the longest, most boring inaugural speech in history. Tyler was a prick. Jackson did some great things but legalized the murder of Native Americans. Harding was just dumber than dirt and everyone around him manipulated him for their own gain. The four of five presidents before Lincoln, for doing everything they could to ensure that, when slavery did end, its death would be bloody, horrific, and the absolute worst outcome possible. Buchanan has to top that list. It's too early to say about modern presidents - in all likelihood, Reagan will be ranked high, GHW Bush medium-high, Clinton medium-low (see Nixon and the judgment thing) and GW Bush, low.

What are 3 reasons why FDR was the best president in US history?

First off - I don't think he was the best ( Lincoln has that honor in my book) but FDR was a fine man and politician who accomplished many things:

#1 - He got the country through the Great Depression. He put people back to work, got roads and schools built. The school I went to was built in the 30's and lasted almost 70 years before being remodeled. He created the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) which brought a massive Public works program into being. The "New Deal" was a complete program of recovery for our nation.

#2 - He was the driving force behind Victory for the Allies in World War II. We didn't do it by ourselves, the British and Russians were our major allies. He faced great adversity from Pearl Harbor through the war years and brought America's might as an Industrial power to generate arms, planes, tanks and guns for the war effort.

#3 - He created Social Security which has provided basic living funds for generations of Americans. Sadly, politics and greed have frittered away at Social Security instead of enhancing it, it was used to fund other programs.

Who was the best looking president in American history?

I feel a bit strange writing this question but here it goes:The runners up:Ronald reaganHe was a hollywood actor before entering politics, and is, in my opinion, quite good looking.jimmy carterIn this picture there’s just something alluring about him.Barack obamaHe looks very open and friendly. I really do consider him a very good looking man.however my vote for most attractive us president is…….Rutherford b HayesI will freely admit i find him really gorgeous in this photo.

Which president was the best president in early American History and why?

Various polls have been conducted about this question. Usually Washington or Lincoln are top ranked. Personally I think Lincoln was a bit better, but of course arguing for Washington also is okay.

Is Barack Obama the second-best president in U.S. History?

No, he's not the 2nd best.  But he's fairly decent.A lot of presidents can claim significant accomplishments in the 1st term.  Ie: Woodrow Wilson passed very significant reforms in his first 2 years. Obama will be in the top half no doubt, but will take a while to rise into the top 10.  My guess is he'll be ranked somewhere around #17 when he leaves office and they do those "rankings," then after the next president leaves he'll move up to #12 or so.  Historians never like to rank the most recent presidents that highly.  This assumes that he will handle any crisis in the next 4 years relatively competently and faces no major self-imposed scandal.  Although Bill Clinton's relatively high standing demonstrates that even that can be overcome.Obama will need a couple presidents to move down before he can move into the "near-great" category of #'s 5 to 15.  My guess is John F. Kennedy, currently WAY inflated at #6, will decline, and it's a strong possibility Woodrow Wilson and Ronald Reagan will decline.   Andrew Jackson is also ridiculously high at #13.  So if all of them moved down a spot, Obama could leapfrog them to around #11.  C-SPAN Survey of Presidential Leadership

Who were the best presidential speechwriters in U.S. history?

Abraham Lincoln (for himself).Ted Sorenson (JFK)Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. (also JFK)Peggy Noonan (Reagan)Raymond Moley (FDR)William Safire (Nixon)James Fallows (Carter)Michael Gerson (George W. Bush)It is also said that George Washington called upon the talents of Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and, perhaps, Thomas Jefferson. John Quincy Adams, know for his eloquence, also helped out James Monroe when he was president.

The Best President Ever?

It's between Lincoln and FDR because they led the country through its greatest crises and never backed down. A great president is measured through how he leads in tough times because tough times don't last, tough people do. Being a knowledgeable, strong commander in chief, and knowing how to manage spending by the government are also included. There are many debates about who is the greatest and most times your just choosing the lesser of two evils. These two are the obvious choices when you look at history. I would love to put JFK in here but the fact is he was taken from the people before he could fulfill his dream. You could argue the failures of Lincoln and Roosevelt as well but no one goes through this lifetime w/o failing. For the great ones, failure is why they succeed.
