Who Were The Radical Republicans

What is meant by "radical Republicans"?

Good question!Radical and extreme are interchangeable and means that some Republicans have went to the extreme on issues like guns, religion, marriage, civil rights, economics or other issues. An example are the white supremacists that consider themselves Republican but promote racism and bigotry that do not align with the majority of moderate Republicans in their party.

Who were the Radical Republicans?

The Radical Republicans were that part of the Congress who gainsaid with the Reconstruction Plan of President Lincoln in the aftermath of the American Civil War. However after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, his Vice President Andrew Johnson took over as the next president of the United States. His viewpoints and strategies were more in sync with the Radical Republicans, according to whom the South should be punished severely for being responsible for all the catastrophes that took place during the American Civil War.

Nevertheless despite of this 'greater compatibility' that President Johnson shared with the Radical Republicans, they still disagreed with him, stating that Johnson's policies still did not contribute much towards punishing the South enough. The icing on the cake took place when some of the Confederate leaders were elected to some major positions in the Congress, which became a source of further anger for the Radical Republicans.

Hope that help :)

Who were the Radical Republicans and on what grounds did they criticize Lincoln during the Civil War?

Member of the Republican Party in the 1860s committed to the emancipation of slaves and the equal treatment and enfranchisment of blacks. Zealous antislavery advocates in the Congress pressed Pres. Abraham Lincoln to include emancipation as a war aim. They later opposed his policy of lenient Reconstruction of the South under presidential control and passed harsher measures in the Wade-Davis Bill. After Lincoln's death the Radicals supported Pres. Andrew Johnson but soon demanded congressional control of Reconstruction. Johnson's attempt to break the Radicals' power led them to pass the Tenure of Office Act; his challenge of the act led to his impeachment. Radical Republican leaders included Henry Winter Davis (1817 – 65), Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, and Benjamin Butler. Their influence waned as white control over Southern governments gradually returned in the 1870s.

Radical Republicans were critical of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War, when he was slow to support the recruitment of black soldiers into the Union Army. Radical Republicans also clashed with Lincoln over his treatment of Major General John C. Fremont. On 30th August, 1861, Fremont, the commander of the Union Army in St. Louis, proclaimed that all slaves owned by Confederates in Missouri were free. Lincoln was furious when he heard the news as he feared that this action would force slave-owners in border states to join the Confederate Army. Lincoln asked Fremont to modify his order and free only slaves owned by Missourians actively working for the South.

Who were the radical republicans and why were they important?

The Radical Republicans were a group of Republicans in Congress led by Thaddeus Stevens who were primarily responsible for Reconstruction. They're important because they were the ones who really pushed the post-Civil War amendments across that abolished slavery and allowed (at least nominally) for black enfranchisement. They were way ahead of their time in that regards... similar legislation wouldn't be passed until another 100 years later.

They wanted to punish the South for the Civil War, and really was about to butt heads with Lincoln over this before Lincoln was assassinated. Most important in their minds was an assertion of loyalty to the United States from the south (requiring oath of loyalty from over 50% of southerners) and acceptance of abolition of slavery. In Lincoln's place was Andrew Johnson, a southerner from Tennessee who never stood a chance. Their confrontation reached a head in Johnson's impeachment trial.

How did Lincoln and the Radical Republicans disagree on Reconstruction?

Basically, Lincoln wanted to reunite the country as peacefully as possible. Radical Republicans wanted to punish the Confederacy. The Radical Republicans removed Confederate leaders from political offices and established their rule over the south. You can read more at the site below.

Why did radical republican's power decline in 1896?

Study the "Compromise of 1877".  There was a tie in the vote at the electoral college level.  In order to secure the vote, the GOP struck a deal, providing for the removal of all troops from the South.  This had been a matter of constant pleading, and heavy promotion by the Southern Congress and it's supporters.  This began a process of reduced political power for the radical GOP wing.  Later, as the 1890's began, a "Progressive" wing in the midwestern portion of the GOP had developed,  and became prominent.  This wing promoted restraint of businesses based upon excessive market size, and based upon anti-competitive practice.  Additionally, there were several fronts in that time's progressivism.  Civil Service was reformed, women were seeking the vote, child labor laws were being promoted, and many supported restriction on alcohol. This was a mass movement in the late 1800's and early 1900's.Progressivism in the United StatesOnce President William McKinley was assassinated, and then V.P., Theodore Roosevelt took over the Presidency, we had our first progressive administration in Washington D.C.  His presidency was generally well regarded at the time, although there was financial panic during part of it.  His Vice-President, Taft took over as President after Roosevelt, and a continued effort at the GOP variety of progressivism continued.  "The Great War" allowed for a larger government to be built based upon general tenets of the time that such things were beneficial, and natural.  Our entry into the european war allowed President Wilson to grow the national government in continuation and extension of the principals which had come right before him.  The establishment of the Federal Reserve, and of the national Income Tax during this administration provided a basis for continued growth of the national government.   It's also important to note that much of this political back and forth, removed from prominence the main thrust of radical Republicanism, which was a heavy reformation of the South, and establishment of very powerful Civil Rights law. This issue had effectively been moved to a lower national priority by so many other movement political memes.

What were the characteristics of radical Republicans? Are there any modern examples at this time?

That question begs for an opinion, and as such is not an actual Quora question. Did you want an opinion for an answer or were you trying to create a negative forum against republicans ?However, if one takes the current definition of radicalized and relate it to the current usage regarding radicalized Islamists/Muslims, then one would find a similar yet lesser scale level of terror infliction, or murder. As an example, there have been terror & violence displayed at facilities where abortions are performed allegedly by far right wing christians, and in that subject Christians & Islamists/Muslims would agree & could possibly work together to rid the world of abortions. And while i play with this concept, it is as pissible to have right wing extremists as it is to have left wing extremists….
