Why are the terms learning disabled and mentally retarded often used interchangeably?
These terms shouldn't be used interchangeably. Someone with a learning disability is someone who has an average IQ, but has a discrepancy between his/her IQ and actual performance. For example, a child has an IQ score of 100, but has a math score of 70. (Standardized tests are used to get these scores.) Children with the label learning disabled tend to have "peaks and valleys"; they may read well, but struggle in math. Furthermore, those formally labeled mentally retarded are now known in other ways such as mildly mentally disabled since retarded is SOOOOOOOO politically incorrect. These children have below average IQ scores and performance scores. Some people like to refer to their scores as "flatliners" because both IQ and performance scores are low and somewhat equal. Why do people make fun of special Ed kids?
Last week I was sitting in my school gym for an assembly and a special Ed boy was sitting behind me, surrounded by some of the douchey boys in my grade. They were all harassing him because he thinks he and this one girl are going out just because she is always really nice to him and he mistook it for attraction I guess. I can't remember what exactly they were saying but it was something like "hey Keith, Keith, Keith, Keith, are you and taylor gonna make out? Heh Keith, are you guys gonna go further?" It was definitely not friendly teasing and they would not shut up, literally this went on for like 20 minutes. At one point the special needs boy got up for a second and the douches assumed he was gonna tell the principal, so one of them said "wow he's a pissy retard, not a nice retard, like Down syndrome kids. They're nice but I still make fun of them anyway." The whole situation made me so mad, but that one thing that guy said in particular completely pissed me off. Why are people so cruel as to pick on someone with special needs???
Regular diploma vs special ed diploma?
Can some one explain the difference? I know a regular diploma is one from regular class. This special ed diploma,will it give these special ed kids the same privledges like go to college or get a decent job? Is it a Diploma or a worthless certificate? Will there be set backs with a special ed diploma? sorce LD adult with a GED
Is liberalism idealistic as opposed to being realistic?
I find that both far wings are irrational. That’s not just a moderating cop-out. An example is the demolition of the crime-ridden Section 8 towers in Chicago many years ago now, in favor of “mainstreaming” the poor. As Sudhir Venkatesh has documented in detail, the families ousted actually suffered more from being uprooted from their communities than they had from violence. They had made their peace with crime, gangs, filth, and poverty, by weaving tight relationships. Those were snapped when the towers were slated for destruction, and never restored. If you’re going to do good, be sure you know the costs beforehand and don’t just act out of misplaced compassion.Conservatives are irrational in a different way. They too often cling to science denialism and unsustainable ideological beliefs. They believe in karma, although they won’t use that term. They believe in a basically fair universe that rewards some and punishes others for either promoting or opposing some kind of universal plan. They think that wealth is good because it must be deserved, and that free markets work great if you’ll just stop trying to jigger them. The latter delusion is known by economists to be bogus, but conservatives must believe it. Conservatives too often reject scientific evidence when it conflicts with their karmic view of the universe. It leads them into a never-never land of scientific delusion, beliefs that women’s bodies have ways to reject rapists’ sperm, that fetuses masturbate, that abortion leads to cancer and birth defects, that climate change is a left-wing hoax, that young-earth creationism is real science.Their viewpoints also lead conservatives to support what they see as helping God balance out the universe by cutting funding to the undeserving poor, killing mentally retarded defendants, and preventing women from getting abortions on the theory that women are just getting rid of remnants from animalistic sex lives.
Is it illegal to have sex with a person with aspergers syndrome?
My girlfriend has aspergers syndrome. We have sex a lot and we are both over 21. Is this illegal in the usa? Im just wondering, i have no intention to stop, we love each other and if its illegal, thats a risk im wiling to take.
