Why Are Er Nurses So Rude And Unfriendly

Why are ER nurses so rude?

I was in the hospital a few months ago after a car accident. My friends were less hurt than I was, so they went to a different part of the ER than i did so we had two different nurses, both of whom were very short-tempered and rude. I realize they have a tough job, but after I was admitted the nurses upstairs were nothing but helpful, sweet, and overall wonderful, and they surely have hard jobs too. Are ER nurses always more rude than the other nurses in the hospital?

Why are nurses so rude?

I'm not saying this is any excuse, but you did ask...so...they put up with a lot of crap. They have to put up with the doctor's crap, the ER patients might not be all that nice to them either...on top of that they probably have to deal with a million questions being asked by worried family members and being yelled at by some ER patients in pain. It's not an easy job, but at the same time it comes with the job. anyway, maybe she was just having an off day. But I know what you mean. I have served nurses before, and they suck. It's like they take it out on me because they had to deal with the crap at their job. It's whatever though, I shrug it off

Do you find it rude when hospital nurses are mean?

Nurses forget, sometimes, what it's like from the patient's point of view.

We had one nurse who was a true B---- when our son was so sick. I asked for more pain medication. She snapped at me, "He could go into a coma that he can't come back from. Is THAT what you want, Mother?" and at that time, the Dr had already told us that his death was imminent. And so, I said "If that's what it takes to stop his pain, then so be it!" She then reported to our doctor "This mother wants me to kill her son for her."

Talk about a mean B----!

So, I know exactly what you mean.

Yes, it sounds like your nurse was unprofessional. You might consider doing like we did, with our nurse. Report her to the Director of Nursing. At least she would be talked to, and told to watch her mouth.

Why are nurses so mean?

A while ago I had a surgery to remove my appendix. I ended up catching some rare kind of bacteria, and had to get a PIC line so I could get the medication for it. I was in the hospital a total of two weeks, and I had this nurse that was horrible! She was grumpy and never spoke a word to me, and when she would push my bed from place to place I would hit walls and corners so hard, I even remember she rammed me so hard into the side of an elevator door so hard my mom asked what on earth she was doing and tried to grab the cart from her. She gave my mom a look like 'you're seriously bugging me right now' put her hand up and said 'ma'am, that's not allowed.' What a *****! But other doctors and nurses saw everything happening, and they didn't help. Are all nurses mean like that? I thought their job was all about caring.

Why are nurses so mean to medical students? (Especially older ones)?

I am currently in medical school, and have interacted with a variety of nurses. I always try to be nice, professional, and courteous to the nurses, introducing myself to them, smiling, asking if they need any help during critical procedures, thanking them when appropriate, etc.

Half of the nurses are very nice and helpful in return. They teach me new things, give me tips, etc. We treat each other like friends.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really help the other half of the time. These nurses (especially the older ones, especially the Asian nurses) are super mean to me no matter what, don't really answer my questions, ignore me, or blatantly embarrass me in front of the patient.

There is one particular situation that infuriates me. I was asking the nurse how to read the patient monitor's archive on the machine so that I wouldn't have to look manually at the printed out paper strip (to save time). She blatantly yelled at me, "just read the paper strip! read the strip! see?" She handed the paper strip to me and showed me on it. I felt so dumb but felt powerless to say anything as it was in front of the patient and the patient's family. Inside, I wanted to say that I already knew that, I wanted to learn from the machine but I didn't want to mess with the machine without guidance out of respect for /her/, the nurse, in the first place. I just left.

I haven't worked with nurse ever since, but the next week, when I came back to the same hospital ward, and saw her, she just stared at me again with her evil eye, and continued staring when I waved hello and smiled.

I am a young Asian female and I am generally liked by my friends (as they say). Most people think of me as sweet and helpful. I bake cakes and other desserts for my medical team every week. I try to help each patient as much as I can.

Why are these (especially older, Asian) nurses so mean to me and other medical students?

Thank you for reading,
Baffled, Frustrated Medical Student
