Which is the best romantic novel by an Indian author?

The best romantic novel by an Indian author was a book I first read when I was twelve and even now it holds the same appeal. It's a timeless classic. It's the greatest romantic true life story of a doomed love affair. It’s an inter racial love story between an European and an Indian. Passionate first love thwarted by cultural constraints.“It Does Not Die” by Maitreyi Devi, poet novelist and protege of Rabindranath Tagore. Maitreyi Devi won the Sahitya Akademi award for this book. This book was written as a response to Mircea Eliade, world famous scholar who wrote “Maitreyi” a semi autobiography, a classic which is taught in schools in Romania. La Nuit Bengali, in English “The Bengal Nights” portrayed their love story, which is mostly the author's erotic fantasy.Forty years later, Maitreyi Devi read “Bengal Nights" and wrote her own side of the story “It Does Not Die”, recalling a true account of their love. It's deep. It's honest and heartfelt. Very touching.Mircea Eliade, then 23 had come down to Calcutta as an Engineer and worked under Maitreyi Devi's father and was invited to stay with Maitreyi Devi's family, intellectual elite and liberal minded who gave their daughter Maitreyi, then 16 years, the best education and while Mircea Eliade learnt philosophy from Maitreyi Devi's father, he in turn became Maitreyi Devi's teacher, teaching her French.Beautiful love blossomed and when Maitreyi Devi's father found out about their love affair, he banished Mircea Eliade out of his home and the intense, passionate love affair was doomed, thwarted by cultural differences.“It Does Not Die” is truly the best romantic novel ever. It's true love. It Does Not Die.It Does not Die – A Romance (Paper) Buy It Does not Die - A Romance (Paper) Book Online at Low Prices in India

What do you consider to be a cheesy, overdone romance plot?

Hmmm having read a few there are lots, but if you read lots you get used to them. I find its actually the intensity that helps ie you can have the same plot eg boss and employee, but i guess its the writer and how they write it that makes it work etc.

Other typical ones are people who used to know each other and now meet, but cicumstances have changed (ie bad boy made good, rich girl loses her fortune)
two rich families that must combine, often with marriage involved of the 2 main characters and her families business going under.
The undercover writer, reporter trying to see the rich, recluse
The illigitimate child from a previous relationship, her escape and either she goes to him for help or he finds out by accident.

So I guess there are lots to chose from (or avoid in this case). You have to have the compulsory "bust up" for whatever reason, the denial of feelings by one or both and conflict.
I guess you can take aspects and mix them up, but I think personally its the characters that keep me interested (ie their "feelings"). Hope it works out and I would love to read it sometime!

What are the most common clichés in fiction writing?

God, where do I start?RomanceThe hot loner guy who never spoke to anybody and generally behaved like a jerk? Falls flat for the pretty girl who ends up discovering he is the most sensitive man EVER.For that matter, any guy the heroine hated the guts of and fought with every minute- ends up being the love of her life..Especially if he was a childhood friend who grew up with her.Millionaires are sick of their money. And the people around them. And  will always fall in love with a pretty woman simply because she is  "natural" or "truthful"And might additionally decide to quit and enjoy a peaceful life (like they couldn't take vacations in private islands when they were rich!)Actually, any good-looking well-to-do guy will always fall for the common  girl-next-door (however annoying or stupid she might be and how much she might have screwed up his image socially with her gaffes) simply because she is  "truthful" or "real".Crime/DetectiveThe nice guy who was the heroine's best friend and who you were supposed to think of as very sweet? Is actually a psychopath out to kill her and destroy the world. But guess what? Underneath all that evil he would still do anything to make that heroine happy and is madly, oh-so-madly in love with her.The bad guy who kills/loots/does a lot of despicable criminal stuff? Has a sad miserable past and STILL misses his mother.Action/AdventureThe protagonist can solve problems with common sense or basic school level  science that experts in the field couldn't. (I think this one idea helps  them sell the story as screenplays to Hollywood!)All the powers of a superhero are in one small object that can be easily stolen. All wars or other big fights should end in a one-on-one combat.Horror/FantasyAny prophecy made by any fortune teller would turn out to be true.If your renting agent said a house is haunted and you tried to be brave and said "Bah, Humbug", 2 days after you move in you will find blood stains on the carpet.MiscKids  who are like 6 or 8 year olds can solve mysteries that adults can't.  From all sorts of Enid Blyton style adventure novels to harry Potter's  first few years at Hogwarts to Narnia to everything else.Anyone who passionately loves ANYthing is actually better than the best in the world in that thing. And many more. But above everything else.....The fact that there is a single villain who is the cause of everything wrong with the world.
