Why Are My Cats Always Eating Tinsel

Why is my cat eating tinsel?

You need to remove all the tinsel immediately. The cat will swallow it and it can cause an obstruction in there intestines. If she has already swallowed it you may find pieces of it hanging out of her bottom very soon. If so you need to gently pull it out so she will not swallow it again as she cleans herself.

Help, My cat ate tinsel! What do I do?

The reason that tinsel is bad for cats is that it can get tangled up around the base of the tongue or entangled in the stomach / intestines, causing a blockage...........which then needs surgery ASAP.

It really depends on the length of the tinsel that your cat swallowed. If it was longer than 2-3 inches, you COULD have a problem......so, contact your vet as SOON as you possibly can. He may want to xray the cat to see what's going on.......or, he may want you to sit back & watch to see if it passes. In my opinion........waiting is not a particularly good idea, because by the time you see that it's NOT going to pass, the cat could already be in REAL trouble.

So, find all of the tinsel and get rid of it.......call your vet and see if he'll make an exception & see you today, or take your cat in EARLY in the morning for an exam.

Hope everything turns out okay for your cat........and your daughter learns a lesson that she'll remember for all of her life. Tinsel, yarn, string, ribbon, etc are DANGEROUS to have lying around when there are cats in the home.

Good luck.............

My cat ate tinsel. Will she be ok. ?

She was nibbling at the tinsel, he's only ate a small bit. She hasn't passed it out in her litter tray but she was sick and it had tinsel in it. I'm just worried because the sick was red and I'm not sure if that's because of the tinsel or if it was blood. I'm keeping her away from it now and she has been ok, she's still eating and going to her litter tray, she seems normal. Please help.

My cat just ate tinsel, what should I do?

My cat ate a toy last year, and before that some plastic bags, and before that some wires. The vet told me that as long as the non-edible things pass through the system the animal should be ok. Things you want to look for would be vomiting, avoiding food, and NOT using the litter box like normal. You will want to check the litter box for the tinsel in the stool over the next few days. If your cat begins vomiting you want to call the vet right away. If you don't see the tinsel in the stool over the next two days and the cat stops eating and stops using the litter box, see the vet RIGHT AWAY.

The vet at this point will only hold your cat for observation because tinsel can't be seen on x-ray, unless you want to pay some really expensive bills. So i think it is ok to keep the kittens at home where they are more comfy and relaxed. That being said-

Keep a close eye on your cat's behavior and get rid of the tinsel to avoid more ingestion in the future! Cats are pretty amazing creatures because they are scavengers and can eat weird things, but they can have those non-food items become impacted in the instestines and will require surgery to live. My cat had to have surgery after the toy incident, and now I make sure that she only plays with safe toys and doesn't have access to things that could make her sick again.

Is it true that if my cat eats tinsel (icicles) from my Christmas tree, that it could kill my cat?

Hi there... It's not good to have tinsel because it could become twisted within the intestinal tract when it bunches up and can even cut through the intestinal wall.

Here's articles on this:

Tinsel Kills Cats! Yes it does... so don't let your cats get anywhere near the tinsel. Most cats love it because its shiny and oh so tasty. But it gets stuck in the intestines and then makes the intestines accordion in on themselves. It requires surgery in most cases and can be often fatal. NOTE: if you see tinsel coming out your cats rear end, DON'T PULL IT [sic you'll pull the intestines out if you]. Bring her in the next day to the vet.

My baby keeps trying to eat ornaments and tinsel?

Hang them higher.

My cat ate tinsel and keeps throwing up! Help?

So, my cat started throwing up last night and she threw up what looked like tinsel. I realized after examining it, that it WAS tinsel. My mom had laid a bag downstairs by the piano with one of those long boa tinsel things for christmas trees, it's white. I asked my mom to check the tinsel and sure enough it was all messed up from my cat eating it. I really don't have any idea how much of it she ate, but she's eating fine and drinking water, and she's peeing but i haven't seen her poop yet.

I'm really worried because she's thrown up chunks of that stuff probably 6 times now.

Do you think she'll be okay? Or should this be something i should take her to the vet for? Please help!

I love my little Zoe. She's my baby. :(

Would it be really bad if my cat ate tinsel off my Christmas tree?

YES! However, if your cat has eaten tinsel I would wait a bit and see if it doesn't pass by itself. But I would watch for signs of obstruction of the bowel.

Why are cats always hungry, though they could survive without food and drinking for a month, maybe more?

Cats are very good little manipulators. They will convince you that they are starving. I am looking after an abandoned cat who is becoming quite overweight lately for this reason. One of my neighbors was also giving her food despite knowing I was feeding her, because she said it “broke her heart” when the cat would come to her crying and I wasn’t home from work yet. I am almost positive someone is still feeding her. Until now she never had a consistent food source, and has been in the habit of going around the neighborhood begging whenever her ostensible owners neglected to feed her. Many cats, like most other animals, are opportunistic feeders. Their instinct is to eat when there is food available whether they are hungry or not, because there’s no telling when they might find food again. When they find a food source they will milk it for all it’s worth. Once they discover that they are able to get food or treats whenever they want by begging, nothing will stop them. If it worked once, they will try again 20 times before they give up, and maybe not even then. This is not to be taken as justification for letting a cat go hungry. Many others have already stated that cats can’t live for so long without food and water, so there’s no need to repeat it.

My cat ate one piece of tinsel, will she die?

No, my mom's cat used to eat tinsel, she passed it. The grossest thing though was sometimes she had to pull it out because it hang from her butt. Seriously.

Don't use tinsel with cats.
