Why Are Our Churches Segregated In This Country

Why are American churches segregated?

Because America is still very segregated. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that Sunday morning was the most racially segregated day in America, and it's still true in 2015. I'm quite shocked that the other people in this thread haven't been honest, but then again, I'm not surprised. Racism had very deep roots, not only within our country's founding, but in its religious foundations as well. Even though slave owners proselytized their slaves to Christianity, they never worshipped with them; relegating them to their own services separate from those of Whites. Even during Reconstruction, many churches would only permit Blacks to sit in the balcony of the church instead of the main sanctuary. The AME Church was created because White parishioners would not permit Blacks to kneel and pray at the altar of their church. Even 60 years after the historic Brown vs. Board of Education verdict that integrated schools nationwide, America is no less divided as it once was. Don't get me wrong; most religious Whites believe that "hating" Blacks is wrong, and openly deeming them as inferior is as well, but there are tons of neighborhoods and churches that fall victim to "White Flight" every generation, and an equal number that return to reap the benefits of gentrification only decades later. You can see the results of this disparity in the heuristic that there are many predominantly Black churches with White pastors, but there are slim to no predominantly White churches with Black pastors. Like Arsenio Hall used to say, those are things that make you say, hmmmmmmm.

Why are churches so segregated?

In the beginning, there was just the Roman Catholic Church. Then the various Protestant churches appeared. Both versions of Christianity spread across the world. In the US, slaves typically didn't go to church, but they were still Christian since the bible tells slaves to be loyal and obedient to their masters. After the Civil War, there was a great deal of hatred towards blacks in the South. So, the blacks split off from the white church and formed a separate church. This church then set itself up in various locations.

That's why churches are segregated.

Why are American Christian churches still segregated by race?

I don't attend church at all but the last time I visited one I was surprised that the people were mainly white.
Why is this? Doesn't this keep the country divided? Will we also be divided in "heaven"? Would "GOD" approve?

Why are many schools in the UK segregated based on religion?

As a secular Brit, I’m very proud of how secular a country (or group of countries) the UK has become.I'm not proud that the House of Lords (our upper house) still has bishops appointed from the Church of England, which is a leftover remnant from years gone by when our government and established church (yuck!) were closely linked. But what really makes me ashamed is our government’s love of faith schools (it was mainly the last Labour government under Tony Blair, but the current government hasn't got rid of them, and in fact is planning to increase the discrimination allowed by them - see below), which in this day and age is quite frankly a disgrace.19% of our secondary (high) schools and around a third of primary schools are faith schools, which allows them to discriminate both pupils and staff based on their religion.I believe this has no place in modern secular societies, and so shouldn't be seen outside of the Middle East, Africa and South America. Come on, even the USA doesn't do this, despite the fact that half their population would probably like it to!In areas where the best schools happen to be religiously affiliated, it’s not unheard of for families to have to attend church for a period so as to qualify as religious enough for their children to be accepted! Isn't that just outrageous?Discrimination in faith schoolsFair Admissions CampaignHere are details of plans by our current Conservative (remember, in the UK, Conservative doesn't mean religious!) government to increase religious discrimination, which is just an outrage in the twenty-first century:Government publishes plans to allow full religious discrimination in school admissions

In many ways, do Churches remain the last bastion of segregation in our society?

Most people work in a diverse work place. They work with people who have different faiths than them. They work with people from other countries.

Yet, they don't go to church with them.

Churches indeed seem to be the last bastion of segregation in our society.

Within 15 minutes from where I live, there is a spectacularly gaudy, gigantic rich, white Protestant church. If you've ever been to Atlanta, it's by Mt. Paran, you know I'm talking about.

There is the Catholic church, which tends to be a bit more middle class.

If you travel outside the city, there are numerous redneck, Southern Baptist churches. These tend to be middle class.

There are the black churches, most famous Ebenezer Baptist Church as well as New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, ran by the infamous Eddie "I Like The Boys" Young.

There are numerous immigrant churches.

Churches are where people go so they don't have to look at people who don't look like them.

Will church and state be united in America?

what do you think? give me your detailed reasons, yes, or no. But today, i learned some very, very, very interesting but mostly scary stuff on this very subject,
and i want to know where people stand on the matter. Just so you know, i'm speaking of Protostants and cathlics, not just any religion, because as you know, much of this country is Christian and Catholic, you could throw in the hindu muslim, viewpoints, and all that but i'm speaking of these two religions being that we all know, that a Islam, or hundiism or whatever would not be accepted as national church or religion..
