Why are people proud of their ancestry?

like

"I'm proud to be irish"

"I'm proud to be african american"

"im proud to be european"

I'm european but it's not like I chose to be so. I was simply born european. I can't take any credit for any actions of my ancestors. Because those people aren't me! I never accomplished those things.

I really can't understand nationalism and race pride.

"My ancestors went through so much and look where we are now"

Okay but you are not your ancestors! You are a completely different person altogether! You may look like them because you have similar DNA but that's about it. Okay i guess you may have similar brain structure as your parents, but that still isn't reason to be proud of being

european
african american
chinese
anything!

if your brain was instead in a body of a different ethnicity would you suddenly be proud of being that ethnicity?
what is your opinion of this?

Why are people proud of their country?

Many people are critical about their country and want to move away. And do move to better countries. The ones who are proud, it's something they are taught. Patriotism is taught in all countries. The school pledge in India has 'I m proud of my country' in it. It's stupid and hilarious if you think about it. And unsophisticated people who don't have any aspect of their personality that they are proud of usually cling to labels that they have been assigned to at birth like religion, nationality, caste etc.Of course, it is totally possible to like your country's history in an objective manner if there are values important to you. Or if your country is perceived as pathetic, you might celebrate a defensive pride(like gay pride). Or be like 'it's not perfect but it's mine'.But, loyalty to your country is necessary for it's function. Which is why treason is seen as a terrible crime. So the design of teaching patriotism is actually sensible. The people that fall for it and are super proud, not so much.

Why are so many people so proud of themselves or their achievements?

Well my friends,I am a marketing person, so my mind works in that way. There s a theory known as Maslow's hierarchy. Which states there are 5 types of needs 1physiological2 security3 social4 self esteem5 self actualisationPhysiological are your basic needs food shelter clothes, (now mobiles as well) etc..Security are your secure needs like bank balance, job etc..Social needs are the needs to be accepted by society..Self esteem are the needs which portrays their successSelf actualisation comes when a person has achieved all the above and feels there is more to life most successful people are in actualisation state..This theory follows hierarchy after a mans physiological needs are met he thinks about safety needs like permanent job, bank balance and so onNow for an individual to meet his social needs is to be accepted by society. But after this need is fulfilled he feels the need of esteem. So to meet his esteem needs he hangs to his achievements. Which he feels proud about and he feels it increases his esteem. After this need is fulfilled. He goes to meet his self actualisation need. Many of the achievers DO NOT portray their achievements after a stage. Eg: mother Theresa never said how many people she served, bill gates never says anything about his achievements, Nor any of the top business tycoons.

Why are Chinese people so proud of their food?

Because they have every justification to be proud of it.It’s undeniably tastyThe 8 major cuisines of China blend and balance salty, sweet, spicy, sour and bitter to create bold flavours and subtle fragrances that appeal to a lot of people. As Timothy Singleton notes, many people can eat Chinese food every day and never get bored of it. It’s actually difficult to have a bad meal anywhere in China, whether you’re eating in street-side shacks or 5-star hotels. It’s varied & creativeFrom roast lamb and naan bread and hearty stews in the North to the artful dim sums of the South, this single country offer cuisines that vary as much as those covering all areas from Moscow to Los Angeles and down to Buenos Aires in terms of flavours and cooking styles. Most dishes are a careful balance of not just the flavours but also the textures, shapes, and colours. Not only is it delicious but it’s often fun to eat. It’s relatively healthy*A typical Chinese meal on the whole is very balanced with meat and vegetables and just a few carbs. Not too much sugar, or salt, or oil, or indeed too much of anything. You might have a soup or broth. Of course, you could pick and choose unhealthy dishes to excess - not all dishes in and of themselves are healthy. The range of ingredients in each dish, including garlic, ginger, and so on, offer a wide range of nutrients. Many dishes are based on a foundation of Chinese medicine principles, which, again, is about balance and moderation.*Obviously, it’s probably healthier to eat Chinese food outside of China, to avoid the heavy metals, gutter oil, fake meat, and various pollutants! It’s China’s trademarkChinese food must surely be what China is most famous for, and yet most people throughout the world may have only ever been exposed to a minuscule representation of it, namely Cantonese or Cantonese-inspired food. Food is China’s brand, it’s ambassador. From the 19th century through to today, many Chinese emigrants arrive in other countries and set up restaurants. For a time in the USA restaurants and laundry businesses were the only options for entrepreneurial Chinese people, and so the food became synonymous with the people and culture in the minds of Westerners. Today when a Chinese person meets someone from another land, they know they always have that one reliable talking point - their shared experience and appreciation of Chinese food.

Why are Irish people so proud of their heritage?

The Irish have survived the English, the Scottish, the plague, terrible deprivation and famine. They are a hearty, vital, spirited people who have overcome many difficulties with humor and a good heart.

Irish people overall love family deeply and enjoy each others' company. They are extremely loyal to family and country. And that is very exciting in a world of many tired-spirited people.

Why are a lot of people (not all) so proud about their caste?

I am Ramgharia. Am i proud, i don't know. It's a carpentery class and i believe comes under OBC, that is it's a low class but not SC/ST. Either way it was made clear it's a lower class than Jatts.Funny thing i only got to know about all this in detail when i came to live in Punjab. But i could care less, as i never grew up among Sikhs.(am sure Bengalis had their own). There is subtle casteism in Punjab but people control themselves perhaps as it's not in the religion. Jatts still dominate in Population and as you hear in all the songs. Our Ancestral Village from Maternal side was Jatt dominated as its name is Mundian Jattan, but our family was respected as my Grandmother was a teacher and we lived like family with all the Jatts.Lets say some Ramgharia Misl or Carpenters did great job in past, still i don't have any direct connection to be proud. When i got no so great rank in CET, i joked with my Mother what's the benefit of OBC, if we are still under General category like Jatts. So, to hypothetically answer the question, it's hard to be overtly proud of your caste if it's low, if i shout infront of Jatts about myself being Ramgharia OBC, they might laugh. If anyone just wants to be randomly or illogically proud of their caste, usually it will be people on the higher end of ranking. So, as you can see i don't believe in Caste System, and i make fun of anyone who does it infront of me.

Why are people so obsessed with being proud of their culture and country?

That probably is one way of achieving the belonging that humans are designed to crave for. One needs a common thread for forming a community. That common thread most often is the culture and country. That is one way to make sure, the people care for the land they stay in an improve things. However, this pride and belongingness brings its own set of problems

Why were the French so proud?

That's just the French. For probably 200 years the center of the universe was France. French was the common language of the Europe. All the artists and writers went to Paris to learn their trade, everybody who was anybody went to France. But ever since WWII they've been marginalized by the US, China, Japan even Germany and they simply can't stand it. For years the French Government has had a project to try and displace English as Europes common language. If you were a Pole or Czech school teacher and you wanted to teach your students French there was a place in France where you could write and they would send you the textbooks free of charge. I mean we are talking about some serious chauvinism here.

P&S Why are people so proud of their native american heritage, even though it's like 1% of their dna?

Many reasons.

1. many families have a family myth about a Cherokee great-great-grandmother. This is a VERY common folklore, and people like to believe the romantic notion of a distant indian ancestor. The truth, however, is that 99% of these stories are false. You see, a few generations ago, "Cherokee blood" was the common cover story for a mulatto ancestor. ("indian blood" was slightly more socially acceptable than "black blood") But people don't want to believe the truth, even when they bother to actually try and research and document their indian ancestry, (and find their "Cherokee" ancestor was actually black) they prefer the romantic ideal.

2. It's fashionable and cool, and they feel it makes them seem exotic and wise and spiritual. This also then entitles them (in their minds) to appropriate native imagery, fashions, and symbols, while dodging "white guilt". (after all, I'm "part indian!" )
