Why Are People So Uptight About Curse Words

Why are some people so uptight about profanity?

I just read that thanks to the efforts of a 15-year-old boy, Los Angeles has implemented "No Cussing Week". Don't get me wrong. I know that their intentions are honorable, but I honestly don't understand why so many people are so uptight about swearing. After all, words only have as much meaning as we give them, and if someone else gets offended by what another person says, it's only because he has allowed himself to get offended. And if anything, I think it's sometimes perfectly acceptable to swear, since swearwords often add emphasis that other words simply can't add. (We know that "Oh, sugar!" doesn't have the same oomph as "Oh, sh*t!".) Not only that, but I can't help but think that if we cursed more often, the words that are now taboo would lose some of their edge. For example, even though no one wishes to be called a "b*tch", it's certainly not as offensive as being called a "c*nt", and that's because the word "b*tch" is used so often that it has lost some of its edge, whereas "c*nt" is considered much worse, since it is less used.

Why are people so uptight about swearing?

It seems as though the USA are particularly uptight about it. Apparently it shows lack of education, and manners. I mean there are times to swear and times when you don't, but does swearing really mean you are stupid, ignorant and selfish? They are just words, all sorts of people use them, they are just words just like 'thank you' and 'please.'

In America, some states have laws against profanities, in Houston two years ago I think August, a woman was ticketed for using a swear word in public. I think South Carolina and Michigan have laws like these too. Free speech is encouraged, but swear in public and you are punished by the law. You can write books on how to kill people, how to terrorise, how to make bombs, and all sorts, but say a swear word in public and it is punishable by law. Watch violence and killing in movies all the time, with sex, swearing, drugs, but get penalized by the law if you swear in public.

The UK generally seems to have a more laid back attitude about it, but it is still a problem!

Why are people in the Us so uptight about swear words?

I was born and raised in the US, I am a doctor, which means I went to school for 20 years in all, from kindergarten until I graduated med school. And......I cuss. Sometimes like a sailor, sometimes you wouldn't think a cuss word would come out of my mouth. There's a time and a place for cussing...in church, it's a no no unless you're really talking about Hell and being damned and whatnot, but in every day life, with family or friends, people you're comfortable enough with, I see no problem with cussing. I've examined a patient before and a word here or there has slipped out, but I'm good at what I do and I'm very well-educated. So, I don't think I fall under the no class, uneducated and disturbing column. I think the people who think that "only" the low class, uneducated and vulgar people are the ones who cuss are merely elitist snobs who are only looking for a way to justify themselves and make them feel like they're superior to someone else. Well, I have news for you all; we all step into our pants one leg at a time and when we ****, we all wipe our *** the same way! Get over it and yourselves! The only people who are better than anyone else are the ones who don't feel the need to view themselves as better than someone else! Get a hobby all you rich assholes!

Why is it that so many people are uptight about swearing?

Probably because of our society's deep puritanical roots. Swear words used to have religious significance (ie blasphemy), but now, that people are much more secular, they don't really think of God or blasphemy when swearing. I guess that the secular people who are offended by swearing have just been conditioned to be offended.

Why do people make such a big deal about cursing?

I cannot stand people who look down on others who curse. I don't curse that much, in fact I only curse when I'm really angry or I...for example, stub my toe, but people still get on me for that? I don't think people who curse are lower or of less intelligence. In fact they have the intelligence to know that they are just words. I wish they would learn to stop stifling others with rules they made for themselves!

Why are British people so conservative and uptight ?

It's no secret that Brits are uptight about sex and nudity. Thus the famous phrase "No sex please, We're British".

In 2007, the British government banned hardcore pornography. But now conservatives in the UK want to ban all internet porn.

"A conservative member of the British Parliament has made a move to block all pornography from reaching Internet subscribers in the UK. The British government plans to meet with Internet service providers in the country next month to discuss the idea of censoring all Internet connections and requiring users to specifically request access to pornographic materials from their ISPs."

British people are also uptight about swearing. A radio announcer caused uproar in the UK because he accidentally mispronounced the the word "hunt" as "****". He was forced to apologize.

"Radio 4 presenter James Naughtie has apologised for causing offense live on air on Monday by mispronouncing Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt's surname. Naughtie said he was "very sorry" for any offense caused. "

I'm from USA and we have a very relaxed view towards porn and swearing. Everyone swears here. We have the biggest porn industry in the world (89% of world's porn is produced in USA). We have softcore pornography on our TV at night (HBO, Cinemax, ShowTime). We invented Playboy and the famous wet t-shirt contests. Our government would never ban porn.

So my questions are:
1.) Why are British people so offended by swear words ?
2.) Why is Britain trying to ban porn ?
3.) Why are British people so offended by nudity ?
