Why Are People Still Dumb Enough To Join The Military

Can dumb people join the military?

You should ask the opposite, which is can smart people join the military. That answer is no. They don't want people who think too much. This forum proves it.

Why are people still dumb enough to join the military?

I feel like it's quite obvious by now that all recent wars have been unnecessary and are just lead by greedy and evil men and the countries invaded by the U.S. have not been an actual threat to the country.

Why die for other's greed?
Why bring unnecessary hardship on your friends and family?
Why support making the world a worse place?
Why go to a place you had no reason to be in, kill another human being and say "It's kill or be killed."?
Why fuel terrorist's rage by doing what the terrorists didn't want you to do in the first place?

I think this Louis C.K. quote is very relevant to my question: "Of course if you fight for your country and get shot or hurt it's a terrible tragedy. Of course, but maybe, if you pick up a gun and go to another country and you get shot, it's not that weird. Maybe if you got shot by the dude you were just shooting at it's a tiny bit your fault."

Please, if you are serving or have served, explain why you decided to and explain why people are still joining the army. I seriously don't get how dumb people can be to risk their lives for no good reason.

Regards.

Why do a lot of dumb people join the army?

Ok, before I get the patriotic backslash, I'm not saying all people there are dumb. I'm just saying, why do a lot of dumb people like to join?

Like the kids I know that join it are just really dumb and they somehow think they will be inside some cool video game or hollywood movie instead of serving because of patriotic reasons.

Why?

Is it dumb to join the military?

Wow! Your family has issues. I'm black & joined the Navy after High School & never got that kind of response. Then again My family has had folks in service since the Civil war & my Grandfather was In the last of the buffalo solider units in Korea ( 24th inf. reg). I encourage you to reach your goal of those gold bars. It's of only two regrets in life I have. I started in the BOOST program & stayed in NROTC till my Calculus tripped me up.
I would think they would be proud of you? To many of us are standing on corners or in lockup wasting our lives away. They are unemployed, but rag on you??? You have every right to rant. Don't worry, Your true family Wears BLUE & WHITES. GO NAVY!

Am I being dumb for thinking about joining the military?

I've put a lot of thought into this and I really mean a lot. Whenever I see commercials for lets say... the Marines, I feel like I should grow a pair and sign up. I know its an over exaggeration made to make me want to do exactly that, but still. Nearly half of the people I hang around with at school are dead certain they're going to enlist after high school. However, I think this is mostly just talk and they are just saying it to seem tough or something. This is probably because of the "Call of Duty" era that everyone suddenly wants to join the military. I'm smart I take nearly all AP and advanced courses and still get A's and a few B's. I feel like joining the military would sort of be a waste of my intelligence. No offense to any prior or active service patriots. I truly do admire what you men and women have sacrificed for our country. I don't like the idea of basically being "owned" by the government for four or more years. If I went to the Middle East I fear that even if I made it out alive I could be basically f***ed up for the rest of my life and regret ever wanting to join in the first place whether that be physically or mentally f***ed up. I would ultimately just appreciate some advice preferably from people who have or are currently serving, but all is welcome.

Thanks

Why do people say that only dumb people join the USMC?

I haven't heard anyone say that. I am proud of our military.

Why did Bill Hicks think that those who join the military are idiots?

The simplest answer is Bill Hicks thought MOST people were idiots. It was his shtick. The line where he says anyone dumb enough to join the Army ought to be allowed is more about the prohibition on gays serving in the military than people who actually served in the military. As someone who was actively serving at the time Bill made the joke and someone who loved Bill Hicks, I agreed with him.
