Why Are Republicans So Against Fema

As a Republican who lives in Florida or Texas, did you turn down FEMA money when the disaster struck you personally?

I’m not a Republican, I’m a registered independent in Florida who usually votes with conservatives (LOVE Ron DeSantis, my Representative in the House,) and I own two properties that were impacted by Hurricane Irma.On my condo on the Halifax River (the Intracoastal Waterway,) I had some screen damage. I took the screens down, went to Home Depot and bought screening, and fixed them myself. For my house, I had one screen that was damaged in the pool area — I didn’t feel comfortable fixing it myself, so I paid someone $75 to do it.So, in both cases, I had some issues as a result of Irma hitting me, and instead of complaining to the government and demanding that they make me right, I arranged it, and paid for it, myself.Sorry to not play into your partisan expectations.

What will happen to the Republican majority if FEMA starts to do a lousy job under Trump?

What will happen? Probably nothing. There’s some debate over whether FEMA has risen to the task in Southern California’s flooding, but there hasn’t been any blowback yet. And as California consistently votes for Democrats, Trump wouldn’t suffer electoral losses if he angers people in California. It will be interesting to see what happens should AGW rear its head and dump a superstorm on a red state like Louisiana or Mississippi. Would Trump pull out all the stops to help a red state recover? It’s arguable that FEMA isn’t up to the task at present, and will probably be even less well-funded with the GOP in charge of all three branches of government.

Why was the response to hurricane Katrina so messed up?

It seems completely stupid how cops weren't allowing pedestrians to walk on the bridge to get to the west side, along with constantly telling the people that busses would be coming soon but didn't.

Answers to FEMA IS-235?

The answers are in your study materials.

One thing that really concerns me is what happens if you need the skills you were supposed to learn in this course during a real emergency? How many lives will be placed at risk as a result of your incompetence?

What is the purpose of FEMA?

"The purpose of FEMA is to coordinate the response to a disaster which has occurred in the United States and which overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities".....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Eme...

I'm a middle of the road Independent...don't hold much umph when it comes to FEMA as per past and current performances...
However, everyone in this country is suffering, regardless if Republican, Democratic, Independent, or Third Party....it's a matter of the principle behind humanity that hold people together....If only they would step out of their shoes and into the shoes of others for awhile, perhaps there wouldn't be such wide spread anger and blame going on.
I sincerely do hope that none of the things you've listed above should ever fall upon you, your family, neighbors or loved ones. Should any such things occur, I hope that you will know the outpouring of support and assistance from not only those close to you, but community and all the unknown faces behind the scenes that work together to help those that need it....regardless of party affiliation....

FEMA administrator Brock Long observed that America lacks a "culture of preparedness’’, do you agree and why?

I think that if you asked a banker, (s)he'd say that America lacks a ‘culture of fiscal responsibility’. If you were to ask a baker, they'd suggest that America is too obsessed with gluten. If you were to ask a landscaper, they would completely agree that America needs more trees and appropriate drainage. Each professional sees the world through the lens of their experience, training and education. Therefore, their opinions are often a little skewed towards what they know, as with anyone. That said, Administrator Long isn't completely wrong. While you have your tinfoil brigade preppers, energetically getting ready for the Apocalypse or whatever SHTF situation is rattling sabers this week, the vast majority of Americans are deeply unprepared for even a minor disaster, such as a power outage. The percentages vary, but most studies agree that between 60-75% have no disaster plan of any sort. No family plan about what to do in case of house fire, tornado or other disaster. Practically no one (outside of my family and immediate circle of friends) has even a rudimentary GoBag (aka BOB, QRB, INCH, etc), which is essentially a backpack containing those supplies that would keep you safe and alive for at least three days. Practically no one I know has squirreled away savings enough to get by for 6 months, if the need arises due to injury, illness or displacement.I think this can be explained by a number of factors. The rugged individualism that Herbie Hoover extolled at the beginning of what was to become the Great Depression is constantly at odds with the vision of America as the Land of Plenty and the ‘Can Do' spirit. In short, Americans have this fanatical belief that whatever Bad Thing happens, we can pull together and make it better, because they often do. However, its often a slim line between confidence and arrogance.
