Why Are There Kings And Queens

Why have there been more kings than queens in the past?

I have seen that in many countries in the past, men were always the ones who became the rulers, even when they had older sisters they were the ones who inherited the throne. Why is that?

Do Kings and Queens equal each other?

They don't resign, they abdicate or die.

I shall just speak as regards the British monarchy. There are two kinds of queen: a queen regnant, who is queen because she actually succeeded to the throne, and a queen consort, who is only queen because she is married to the king. There is no gender discrimination other than that, and a king and a queen regnant have exactly the same powers. A queen consort, on the other hand, has no powers at all as she got the title only by marriage.

Why are there no kings of England, but queens and princes?

King Edward, the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary, became King after his father’s death in 1936. He fell in love with an American, Wallis Simpson, who was seeking a divorce from her second husband, and had divorced her first, he wanted to marry her. King Edward told British Prime Minister, Stanley Baldwin about it, and of course, Baldwin didn’t agree with the idea. Baldwin told him that remarriage after divorce was opposed by the Church of England, and the people wouldn’t accept Simpson as Queen Consort. King Edward had a solution, he would remain King but Simpson wouldn’t be Queen, and the British cabinet rejected it.On 11 December 1936, King Edward officially abdicated, and he was succeeded by his younger brother, King George VI.King George VI had two children, Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, after his death, he was succeeded by his eldest daughter Queen Elizabeth II.The Queen has three sons and a daughter, her first child is Prince Charles, and he’s 1st in line to the throne. When Prince Charles rules, he’ll be King of England. Prince Charles has two sons, when his eldest son, Prince William rules, he’ll be King of England too, and so will Prince William’s heir, Prince George. They are three future Kings of England.

Does Ireland still have kings and queens?

Northern Ireland still is part of the UK and so their Queen is still Queen Elizabeth like the rest of Britain. The rest of Ireland is a separate country called the republic of Ireland and they have a president; no idea who but they do apparently.

I made the mistake when I went there as a 17 year old American tourist in thinking that all of Ireland was one whole country and that it was all part of the UK with it all having Queen Elizabeth as their Queen. Needless to say when I voiced my ignorance in a pub in Dublin the local reaction was less than friendly, but honestly I find the politics of that whole region so strange I don't get any of it. For example, I then went to Scotland where I referenced it as part of Britain only to get yelled at for that, but IT IS part if Britain, but it has its own parliament? I mean how more confusing could one tiny Island possibly get?

I've never been happier to be an American, one country, one government, one defined border. North Dakota hasn't declared war on South Dakota, Manhattan isn't trying to become a separate nation, there aren't rival presidents vying for power, and it's all one united nation. Not confusing at all.
