Why are people so stupid?

While I am not denying that stupidity exists, it is often also a label applied to things we are not intelligent enough to understand or see.  Here are some stupid things:Wanting to go to the moon was stupid.Building a mobile music strategy around iTunes, knowing that it would only be successful if almost all record labels and publishers cooperated by allowing you to sell their music one track at a time was stupid.Using your credit card online was considered stupid and Amazon was predicted to fail because of consumer reluctance.Dropping out of Harvard was stupid for both Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg.  Heck, dropping out of school could almost be considered the definition of stupid.Funding and building a company to provide private, consumer focused rocketship company for space travel is stupid.My experience has taught me that many times when I see stupidity in the world, it is because I am myself too stupid to get it.  I take to heart Apple's profound "Think Different" campaign because every single one of the people on those posters was stupid for embarking on the journey they did.  Jim Henson touched millions with muppets, how stupid.  Einstein worked in a patent office, but thought he understood space and time better than anyone else. Really?  Steve Jobs was fired from Apple because he ran out of tricks and because his board thought he was filled with worthless new ideas. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison because of racism and political oppression, got released and forgave those who trespassed against him; how stupid.  It feels to me like that everyone who "thinks different" is perceived as stupid by others.Today I watched a clip of Malala Yousafzai on John Stewart's talk show and I was blown away by the stupidity of this little village girl.  First she speaks out to local media against the Taliban- the same group that mounted an attack against the most powerful country on earth.  They shoot her in the face, and instead of just going back to the way things are supposed to be, she calls out her enemies continually in front of the United Nations and on TV.  I am humbled by her stupidity because it is illogical for little girls to fight against bearded hooligans with bombs.Think stupid, you will be in great company.

How do I get over my low tolerance of stupid people?

When I married the first time, I was 21. The first time I met my husband's mother, I was appalled. She knew every old wives' tale there was and believed them wholeheartedly (cats that steal babies' breath, joint snakes...the list goes on). Her only reading material was The National Enquirer, and she had never been out of our Midwestern state, and never more than a few hundred miles from home.She didn't like or trust me because I was intelligent and college educated. I thought she was a backwoods hick.And yet -- over the years we came to respect each other. We spent quite a bit of time together after the kids came because I thought it was important they have good relationships with their grandparents, and my husband didn't care, so if they visited, it was up to me to take them.She'd listen to me when I played Snopes to her old wives' tales; I'd listen to her tell me about her time of being a single mom and opening a tiny diner to make enough money to get by, her kids' childhoods, and how to cook. We actually came to enjoy each other's company despite having very little in common.When her son (my husband) turned out to be a complete and total jerk, she took my side and told me that I could divorce him, but I was stuck with her -- and we became "out-laws" instead of "in-laws". She's been gone for many years now, but I still miss her.What I'm telling you here is that it's not about the intelligence, it's about the heart of someone. Your life will be considerably poorer if you cut people out of it because they're not "smart enough". I don't know how you change except by being open to people who mean well. Maybe you can start by considering yourself a mentor to the world at large. I think you will be surprised at what you yourself will learn in the process.

Am I an elitist to think that most people are stupid? I worked to put myself through school, became an entrepreneur, and I’m happily married, fit, and healthy. I tell people my “secret” is commitment and hard work, but they just want shortcuts.

Most people are stupid because they have been trained by the public schooling system to become conformist and obedient slaves to the ecnomic paradigm. Public schooling is designed to dumb you down. That's an undisputable fact. Otherwise, why would they force you to memorize so many useless facts in public school? Most of the stuff they teach you from grade 9 and higher (in high school and university) is either1) Worthless to everyday life (like calculus and algebra. Who the hell will ever use those in everyday life?)2) Complete nonsense (like the crap they teach you in history class. All politically correct nonsense)3) Even if they thought you something useful in class, you probably could have learned it using the Internet or books on your own. For example, I don't remember anything from any of the biology classes I took in high school. I do, however, learn a lot about biology by using the Internet. I say drop out of school once you finish grade 8 because that's all of the formal education you will ever need. And yes, I answered your question about why so many people are so goddamn stupid. It is because the school system around the world is designed to make you stupid. Plus, people are very gullible, and have been conditioned and trained by school to believe whatever the government tells them. The government could tell the masses the most stupid lies, and they will believe it.  The masses are too dumb to do research on their own, so they believe in anything the government tells them. I call these people sheeple. And these people are too dumb to be helped. Sucks to be them. But luckily I'm no longer dumb enough to be a sheeple.
