Why Are Videos Exported As Cineiform Larger Than Regular Gopro

How does Cineform compare to Apple ProRes and Avid DNxHD?

I think it's important to understand that all three of these codecs are primarily finishing or intermediate codecs. What  I mean by that is, other capture codecs are transcoded to these for editing. Yes, there are devices you can use to acquire directly to these flavors of video, but that's another topic. Each codec was developed in the universe of a specific application. ProRes was developed as an intermediate specifically for FCP to make highly compressed HDV more edit friendly. Cineform was developed for the same reason, initially for the PC and Premiere Pro but later for almost all NLEs regardless of platform. Avid's development of DNxHD was a little different but the end result is the same. Each was intended to be an edit codec that stands up well in compositing, color correction/grading and multi-generation applications without being a burden on storage and processing. The decision to use one of these codecs over the others is usually done out of convenience. If you're already a FCP user then you already have ProRes as part of your default workflow. Avid folks already have DNxHD. And back in the first days of HDV if you were editing using any of the other PC-based softwares, you bought Cineform just to make your world easier. And each does exactly as it is supposed to. They provide a high quality alternative to the highly compressed acquisition codecs that don't stand up well during compositing and color grading. Now if you want an opinion on which is better, I have one of those…Years ago, in 06 I think, I did a test where I took the same HDV clip and transcoded it to all three of these editing codecs (at the time I had access to all three editing platforms through friends). Before you ask, no, I don't have the footage anymore. Sorry. To evaluate the clips I decided to use After Effects because it gets used along side each of the three edit apps I mention above. I did the evaluations on both a Mac and a PC to ensure there wasn't a platform bias. The differences were subtle but Cineform won. The video was crisper while  the other two looked just a bit soft. The color with Cineform also seemed more true to the original footage than the other two. I blame Quicktime for the color difference as both ProRes and DNxHD are Quicktime dependent. Cineform is not. I've used Cineform in my workflow ever since. And just in case you're wondering, First Light is fantastic.

How do I fix the playback lag in the latest Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2014 update?

Eight things you should try, in orderRestart Premiere completelyLower the playback quality in the source and program monitorsIf it’s just a section of the timeline lagging (it’ll usually be highlighted red), select that area with the i and o keys and then go to Sequence > Render in to outStore your media on a fast external storage device, preferably a RAIDUse Adobe Media Encoder to create low-resolution proxies of all your footage. I’d recommend using the GoPro Cineform codec with a resolution of 1280x720. This is much easier to scrub through compared to 4K H.264 or even 1080p H.264Upgrade your system hardware. Unfortunately Premiere wasn’t designed to run on lower-end hardware. Ideally, as a consumer, you want an NVidia graphics card with CUDA support, at least 8 GB RAM, a quad-core Intel Core i7 CPU or better (they have hyperthreading), and an SSD to use as a scratch disk.Re-install Premiere. Downgrade to an older version if needed.Hire someone else to edit the video :)

How long will it take to render a 200 minute 4K video in Adobe Premiere Pro?

As long as it takes…No one can answer that unless they have rendered the exact same movie using the exact same hardware configuration on the exact same machine. No one can even make an educated guess without a ton of additional information. With as many computer configurations that are currently available, with CPU, GPU, disk speed and memory variations making significant differences, it would be hard to guess. When you also include variations such as original file types, bit rates, added graphics, added FXs and audio (as pointed out by Scott Bethel) it increases the odds of getting the answer wrong. We don’t even know if you are on a Mac or PC which would incorporate the differences between how the OSes handle memory and files systems.I could ask you 10 different questions and the information still wouldn’t get me closer to the answer.

What is the best way to convert MP4 files into an iMovie compatible format for free?

It can also import video and photo files from your hard drive. iMovie supports a wide range of video formats and allows you to create projects for specific video formats. You can use the following formats in iMovie: DV, HDV, AVCHD, Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple Animation Codec, Motion JPEG / A, iFrame, h.264, some but not all MP4, MOV. Since .mov or .mov is a container, it will be imported into iMovie if it contains one of the above video codecs, or you will not be able to import to iMovie. Why can't MP4 video file be imported to iMovie?iMovie imports MP4 files encoded using MPEG4 / AAC or H.264 / AAC data. If you encode your MP4 video files with other codecs, the codec differences may be one of the major issues that your iMovie did not import the MP4 file. One of the best solutions for this problem is to convert your MP4 file format to iMovie compatible file format. In another case, iMovie contains all the codecs commonly used for MP4 files. However, there are MP4 files that contain different audio and subtitle stream codecs. If these codecs are not included in the iMovie-supported codec group, no specific MP4 will be imported into iMovie.

What is the best mostly-lossless video codec to work with in Windows, for applications like Premiere and Resolve: DPX, Cineform, Prores, or something else?

Thanks for A2A.This one is not brief. I will go with ProRes 422 or Cineform as a codec and these two works really well with Premiere. These two gives the best compression performance without any quality loss. With these advantages, one of them is that it will give more encoding speed as compared to other codecs out in the market. If you are aiming for full-fledge movie, then i would recommend ProRes 422 or if you are going for some small video or a trailer, then go on with Cineform or Prores for this. Never compromise the encoding speed in this situation as these two will give you best rendering speed and process.Hope it helps!

How can I trim GoPro footage without compromising quality, before converting to cineform/prores 422 etc?

Hi, want to know the process with which you can trim out the GoPro footage without causing any harm to its quality? Then you can give Video Editor by Wondershare a try. This is a professional tool and keeps due care while editing the videos.I am suggesting this only, as it helped me a lot in completing my video projects with quality intact. If you want to try this then can visit go with trial version [Official] Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate - Your Complete Video Toolbox. Required steps useful for the trimming of GoPro Footage are as follows:Download and launch the tool> upload GroPro video using Add file drop down menu> select the Trim button> when the trim page appears, use the slider and mark out extra footage part and cut it down, then delete it. Then, save the footage and now you can proceed with your further conversion work. All the best!!

What is the difference between transcoding and creating proxies? Which should I use (with what settings) when editing 4K footage in Premiere Pro? (or should I not use them?)

Transcoding is the generic term for re encoding any video into a video with different settings.Proxies, are the lower quality files you reference while editing, but if you set up correctly in Premiere, it knows to give you the proxy files while editing. Often you will not get 100 percent real time while editing uncompressed 4K because of several issues including storage speed, cpu, gpu, so these proxies will help get you real time by referencing lower res versions of the file while editing. But when you export, Premiere knows to use the original source media. You may also chose to turn the proxies off during final conform/color correction since real time is not as critical (because you have picture lock) at that stage and, ideally, your doing your color correction on the actual source files.
