Why did the Soviet Union invade Finland? Did they really need all that Finnish land?

During the 1930s, Stalin long couldn’t make up his mind about who was the worst danger to him: the Nazis, or our future WWII allies Great Britain and France. He supposed that the French were a particular threat, because of all the money they lost on the loans to Czars, and because Bolsheviks left them in 1918 toe-to-toe with Germans in WWI.Hitler’s diatribes against the international plutocrats initially gave Stalin some hope. But the Spanish war left him in serious doubt in his ability to deflect Hitler’s aggression westward. Before WWII, Stalin considered Finland, the Baltics and Poland as the primary springboard for the next Imperialist attack on the USSR. The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact eliminated the last two, at the expense of getting the border to Germany. But Finland remained. And it was friendly with the Western powers. If Hitler somehow would see eye to eye with them, Stalin had a serious problem: we have much less strategic depth in the north-to-south direction, than west-to-east. And Leningrad, with all its military industry, was right across the border.Stalin manufactured the Mainila incident. The “Liberation march agains the White Finns” started, known to the rest of the world as the Winter War. This is how Finland at the end of 1939 suddenly found itself an early member of the anti-Hitler coalition. On June 25, 1941, Stalin bombed Helsinki again, which made Finland re-enter the war on the side of the Nazis.Soviet cartoon from 1943: “Awkward disguise. Finnish bandits in a hide.” The poster behind the Finnish bunny says “Finland is a quiet, harmless country”. The artillery shell in the hands of the Finnish Nazi-sympathiser says “Target Leningrad”.
