How to fix a DVD/CD Drive won't stop spinning and won't eject?
Hi, I have a HP dv6500 Notebook and the DVD/CD drive will not stop spinning (even when there is nothing in it) and it won't eject either. Also when I look for the drive under my computer and the device manager it doesn't show up, there's not even a section for a DVD/CD drive under the device manager. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

so i got a new DVD/CD rom drive and i connected it and it worked fine. then i was trying to eject my flash drive but by mistake i ejected my DVD drive just like the flash drive, the safely remove hardware" way just like a flash drive. so now my drive will only come up under BIOS as UNKNOWN and will not show up AT ALL so i can use it. I have windows 7 ultimate. anyone know what to do to fix this??

Since this question is marked under the computer category, I am going to assume you have a home PC with a stock CD Drive. The reason the CD won’t eject is unknown to me without further diagnosis. However, if your main intent to retrieve the disc that is inside, you can remove the drive from your computer and opening the metal casing. If you do not feel comfortable opening the case, take it to a local computer repair shop.There is commonly a small hole on the drawer face. Use a small paper clip end to to poke into this hole , this should slightly open the drawer if it isn't mechanically trapped

Almost all tray-load disc drives have an external release button and a small hole in the door to access the manual lock release. To open a tray-load drive, do the following:1. Press the Windows + I key.2. The computer fully shuts down.3. Look for the small hole on the faceplate of the disc drive. This is the manual release hole. The location of the manual release hole will vary. NOTE:On some models, the release hole and the drive activity LED look similar and are approximately the same size. Do not force the paper clip into the hole if it does not go in. Make sure that the hole is not actually the LED.4. Straighten a paper clip to use in this step.1. Press in gently on the paper clip until the tray is released.2. Releasing the lock will allow the tray to open a small distance.3. How come when i press my cd drive eject button it won't open?
To check whether it is just the button that is broken try ejecting it using software. In windows explorer right click on the drive and choose eject. If it still fails and it is making a noise, it is probably either broken or has a cd jammed in it (something possible on some). You could try using a paper clip to push it open. Turn the PC off, straighten the clip and push it into the small hole on the face of the CD. It should cause the CD tray to open.
My DVD drive is auto ejecting itself. What are some solutions to stop it?
There are two basic possibilities. The first and most likely is, if the DVDs are clean then you have a failing drive. I'm presuming the DVD drive is in a computer , so the second possibility is a virus. There are a few viruses that make peripherals do weird things that include interfering with CD and DVD drives. Those are rare nowadays however, and if your computer is “clean”, open the tray and see if there's any dust on the laser lens. Very gently wipe the lens with a clean paper towel moistened with electronics contact cleaner ( Caig De-Oxit or equivalent)that leaves no residue..do not use alcohol. Afterwards, if the drive keeps ejecting DVDs, replace it.

If you have never fixed any electronics, you probably don't. You are going to have to buy a new one. There's a chance that it's just a bad part, but the parts are probably not available. I have 25 years of electronics repair and I would just buy a new one.
Why do Macs still have an eject button but nowhere to place a CD?
The wireless keyboard is the same for macs with and without a CD/DVD reader.Macs without one still have USB ports and you can attach a CD/DVD reader to those ports.The eject key is not only used to eject disks but also to sleep/restart/shutdown the computer (there used to be a power button on Apple keyboards, but that's long gone and the eject button with modifier keys is used instead).
