Why Did South Africa Change Its Flag

South African flag, mark of the beast 666?

Total BS but still... Mandela's prison no: 46664...

P.S. The AWB had the three 7's, that was because when the f-up was started, they had 7 members.

When did South Africa stop being a union and when did it change its flag?

The Union of South Africa (with the present-day borders) was formed on May 31, 1910. It stopped being called a union on May 31, 1961, when a new constitution was enacted. From then on, it became the Republic of South Africa.Edit: The actual situation of the provinces didn’t change with South Africa becoming a republic. It is still a “union” of provinces - a unitary republic. Refer Jamie Oglethorpe's answer for a detailed explanation on this. The flag of South Africa was changed two times. First was the Red Ensign, used de facto as the national flag, from 1910 to 1928:A new flag was designed due to unpopularity of the Red Ensign. The flag below was used from 1928 until 1994. Thus, South Africa had this flag partly in the Union period and partly in the Republic period. The design was based on the so-called Van Riebeeck flag or "Prince's Flag" that was originally the Dutch flag; it consisted of orange, white, and blue horizontal stripes. The three flags in the center represent the former British colonies of Cape Colony and Natal with the Union Jack on the left, followed by the flags of the former Boer republics of Orange Free State and the South African Republic on the right. This flag was relinquished on April 27, 1994, when a new (and the current) flag was adopted by the Republic:Red, white, and blue represent South Africa’s Dutch and British colonial history, while black, gold, and green represent Pan-Africanism. Seems as if all colors are pointing from the hoist side to the fly side, implying the country moving forward with all citizens as equals, regardless of their race or ethnicity. “A symbol of convergence and unification” - Heston ThomasTo sum up the answer to your question, South Africa stopped being explicitly called a union in 1961 (but in fact it still is a union) and changed its flag most recently in 1994.References and image sources:1. Why is the 1928-1994 South African flag touted as a racist flag by the US media?

Even if we assumed the flag had no innately racist connotations (which I don't accept), it makes little difference.  Let me ask you a question, if you see a white guy with a swastika tattoo, what do you think of him?  The swastika existed long before the Nazi party, it has ancient symbolism in a number of cultures, so why do we think of it as racist?  The answer is because it was appropriated and used by racists on a massive scale as an explicitly racist symbol.  That meaning of the symbol is so ingrained now that use of the swastika is inescapably tied to Nazi ideology.  If someone used it, but protested that he wasn't a racist, we'd pretty much think he was lying or extremely ignorant. The same is true of the apartheid era flag.  It is really only used, at this point, by white supremacists, in and out of South Africa, and so the meaning is now inescapably tied to racism.Symbols mean what we collectively agree that they mean, neither more nor less.  If a symbol is exclusively used by racists, it becomes a racist symbol.

Is South Africa a single country?

Yes. It has a national parliament and other institutions such as the Constitutional Court that are the supreme authority in the country. Lower levels of government, to the municipal level also have representative councils that can promulgate local laws and regulations, but those laws and regulations are subject to national oversight.See my related answers for more details:Jamie Oglethorpe's answer to Why is South Africa not a federal country but a unitary country though it has provinces like federal countries?Jamie Oglethorpe's answer to When did South Africa stop being a union and when did it change its flag?Jamie Oglethorpe's answer to Why is the South African Constitution one of the finest constitutions of the world?

Can we change the Flag of India?

No you cannot change the national flag .If you even make any minute changes in it , it would be considered as offensive. But guess what "amazon.com" can change the national flag of India and nobody cares about it. Let's take a look at amazon's U.S. websiteOnline Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & moreif you open the link you will get an image of national flag of India to redirect you to the Indian amazon.here is the pageIf you look closely, you can see the deformity in the ASHOK CHAKRA (central part) of Tiranga.AMAZON'S IMAGE OF TRI-COLOR INDIAN FLAG.ORIGINAL INDIAN TRICOLOR FLAG.When I asked amazon about this thing they replied that they will change the National Flag image but nothing happened.I got this reply when I asked them again about my complaint.Really amazon???? I ordered something? Did i ask You about any orders? Then I though why not contact "amazon.in" Online Shopping: Shop Online for Mobiles, Books, Watches, Shoes and More for the issue and they had the following answer..So, It's been around 11 days since they asked me to wait for 24-48 hours. I don't know why their 24 hours are equivalent to more than our 11 days...(maybe they have their customer service centers on Jupiter or some other planet and days are bigger there..well, maybe).I understand on image compression things are not clear but their how can a round shape be converted into this kind of shape? Oh come on  Amazon (company), just realize your mistake and change the  flag.

Why is there alot of Racism in the South?

I'm from Chicago and I went to Texas for a few days to visit some relatives and I was totally culture shocked, just because I saw the confederate flag on a bunch of homes, I felt chills up my spine thinking that there are people who are pro confederacy and pro slavery, its crazy, and the irony is that most of those homes with those flags had pick-up trucks with bumper stickers that said McCain/Palin 08 and Bush/Cheney 04. I also saw a home that had a monkey poster that said "Im from Kenya" refering to Obama. I was taken back and felt as if I was in the 1860s.

Me being a hispanic I was so scared to even leave the car for some chips at the gas station in rural Texas, when I eventually did stop at a gas station to ask for directions, the guy looked at me and walked away, it was an ackward silence and I just left to avoid it. Outside the gas station I saw a lady in the van and I walked towards her waving to ask for directions and she drove away as fast as she could. I was like "oh wow" Good thing I stayed in San Antonio where I felt a lot safer judging by the fact that the majority of people there are Latinos. I dont think I will ever go again, that was the most surreal experience I have ever experienced. Are Republicans that racist? Or are they only racist in the south?

Why do Southern States still hang the confederate flag?

Is it possible for the government of a country to change its flag?

In general it is not possible. Some country changed its flag. But it is not an easy thing and many time not worth also. It takes lots of effort on discussion on the reasons for change, designing new flag and updating it and dealing with emotion of some people. Considering the effort, time and money required, almost all the government think better not to change the flag, but give more effort on improving the nation/coutnry and return more value to the existing nation/country and the flag.Usually, lots of effort and thought process, emotions (patriotism) will be given to the flag on its initial design and considering it. For an example one can go through the New Zealand flag debate, from World War 2 till today this debate is going on. South Africa changed its national flag on 1994 April to represent new democracy.Canada changed its flag on 1964 after a serious debate over it, called Grate Canadian Flag Debate.Libya, Georgia, Venezuela, Myanmar  etc changed their flag in the history. However, it takes lots of human effort, emotion and time considering the country, which may deviate from effort on progress.
