Why Did The Fourth Crusade Go To Constantinople And Not Jerusalem

On which crusade did Europeans go by land from Constantinople to Jerusalem- the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th?

The First.
Second they never got there. Third one detachment went that way but similar end.

Why did the Crusaders sack Constantinople in the Fourth Crusade?

It just kind of boggles my mind that fellow Christians would sack one of the most important cities in Christianity at the time. Maybe because of politics but I would like an explanation and background of why this event occurred. Please and thank you.

What if the fourth crusade took Jerusalem?

That’s an hypothetical question, but here’s my two cents:Seeing as the fourth crusade ended up being against fellow christians, with the crusaders taking and establishing a Latin Empire in Constantinople for half a century, it is interesting to think about what could have happened if things had went the right way. (That being said, the latin citizens in constantinople had been massacred and harassed by the orthodox population after the death of Manuel, so there is some type of vengeance motive behind the sack of 1204)In my opinion, a coherent and solid fourth crusade would have been able to retake Jerusalem and re-establish a Kingdom as strong and perhaps stronger than it was before Hattin in 1187.The crusader states (and especially the second kingdom of Jerusalem centered around Acre) had recovered tremendously after the victories of King Richard I in 1291–2. After the death of Saladin, the Ayyubids (Saladin’s dynasty) slowly unraveled, with Saladin’s brother maintaining a loose hold over Egypt and a more divided Syria. In fact, Jerusalem was offered back to the crusaders several times in the early part of the 13th century, as the Ayyubids were losing their unity and becoming more worried of future crusades. In the end, the emperor Frederick managed to recover Jerusalem without fighting and the Kingdom reached its second peak from 1229–1243. However, the second major defeat at La Forbie in 1244 crushed the resources of the Kingdom and allowed the Mamlukes to rise from the ashes of the Ayyubid dynasty. The Mamlukes were much more formidable than even Saladin had been. Once they beat the Mongols in 1260 at Ain Jalut, they were virtually unopposed and conquered all the crusader states within 30 years.I believe that a successful fourth crusade which could have retaken Jerusalem would have succeeded in the long run provided that Egypt could’ve been controlled and that a Franco-Mongol alliance could have been established. If that had happened Jerusalem might still be under Christian control today. (Although it would have probably been taken by the Ottomans at some point)(This is a quick and rough answer and I’ve left out a lot of details, don’t hesitate to ask for more)

How were western Europeans able to sack Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade?

Venice, it's all Venices fault. To back up for a little bit, the crusades had a history of using Italian trading cities for transportation, with Genoa and Venice and the like providing ships to transport the crusaders. After the dramatic, but only slim victory, Third Crusade, Knights wanted to go on crusade and the pope wanted to conquer Jerusalem, so Innocent III called another crusade, this time to attack Jerusalem through Egypt. Knights and minor lords began to assemble, and started converging on Venetian territory as a launching point. Enrico Dondalo then saw a golden opportunity. The crusaders needed some money to pay the Venetians, the Venetians needed to conquer a Croatian city called Zadar, so Enrico got the crusading army to attack it, in return for signing off the debt. So a Christian army of crusade attacked a Christian city to pay off debts. This isn't starting well. After killing their fellow Christians, the crusading army finally set sail for Egypt. Before even setting off, one of the crusading leaders was convinced by an Byzantine Prince called Alexios Angelos to attack Constantinople for him, in return for money, men and converting to Catholicism. After a heated debate, ~12,000 heavily armed warriors set sail for Constantinople. They then captured the city, after a series of battles and attacking the city, installed the pretender prince to the throne (becoming Alexios IV Angelos). After a couple months of waiting, the crusaders realized nothing was going as planned, and the new Byzantine emperor wasn't paying them on time, and everything started to fall apart. The emperor was deposed, a new guy took power, and then the crusaders got really angry since they realized they were never going to be paid! So they besieged and sacked Constantinople.Bascially the Fourth Crusade was a comedy of errors, but so many people died and world history was so changed that it becomes depressing.Hope I answered your question, if I need to change anything let me know.
