Why Did They Decide To Write The Constitution Rather Than Revise The Articles Of Confederation

Why did the Articles of Confederation had to be changed?

because it contained fatal flaws and mistakes that could have potentially ruin the new governmant of america the articles was only a rough draft of what would be the future of the american government for a short while just to keep the states united. The founding fathers attended another convention because they were not happy with the articles and wanted a strong central government and all the states united as one. the articles conatined flaws like there was no national currency....each state like had its own money, there was no pwer to charge taxes because the ppl just fought a war against britain to get rid of those lol (no taxation without representation)....so ppl didnt want to get the feeling of being taxed again. there was no military or any form of protection...just a small militia...and there was so many states that had a big population and others with a very small population, there was no form of governmental system (executive, legislative, judicial like today...) they were a starting country and had a lot of stuff to write in the constitution :)

hope that helped

Who decided on the constitution and why?

I bet you're sorry you asked this question after that second answer. Those who founded the country like Jefferson, Washington, John Adams, basically those who signed the Declaration of Independence.

Originally, the country used The Articles of Confederation, which gave most of the power to the states to decide what to do about almost everything, including issuing their own money. It made commerce between states extremely difficult and made the states into what amounted to their own little countries. The founding fathers realized that the country as whole was divided and not able to stand up to hostile outside forces the way it was and that the difficulty with trade and commerce was stopping the country from progressing. So, they created one, uniform group of laws that all the states had to abide by.

Why did the US Constitution replace the Articles of Confederation?

It became obvious that the Articles of Confederaton would not be sufficient to hold the nation together.
1) Under the Articles there was only a unicameral legislature so that there was no separation of powers.
2) The central government under the Articles was too weak since the majority of the power rested with the states.
3) Congress, under the Articles, did not have the power to tax which meant that they could never put their finances in order.
4) In order to change or amend the Articles, unanimous approval of the states was required which essentially meant that changes to the Articles were impossible.
5) For any major laws to pass they had to be approved by 9 or the 13 states which proved difficult to do so that even the normal business of running a government was difficult.
6) Congress did not have the power to regulate commerce which caused competition between states as well as diplomatic issues

Why did the delegates to the Constitutional Convention scrap the Articles of Confederation?

The Articles of Confederation, the first official government of the United States had many serious weaknesses. 6) Under the Articles, Congress did not have the power to regulate commerce which will cause competition between states as well as diplomatic issues.

Why did the Framers write the Constitution?

The Framers wrote the Constitution because the Articles of Confederation were not strong enough to protect the states or the citizens and it was proven by the numerous rebellions sprouting up in various states. The state governments were quickly becoming European style states who were more interested in their own welfare rather than the welfare of the entire country, which could have led eventually to the break up of the USA. The new constitution approved by the citizens, not the states, removed sovereignty from the states and gave some of that power to the Federal government and retained the rest for themselves.

Why did our Founding Fathers write the Constitution?

The original foundation for running the country was the Articles of Confederation. It created a government that was too weak (right-wing). The Constitution moved a little to the left. It created a Democratic Republic. Since it gave government more power, the Bill of Rights were written to check that power and insure the concept of limited government.

The Founders also furthered defined the type of rights the citizens of the US had. They chose natural rights. These are rights that are given by "The Creator". Because of that, they cannot be taken away by government. These are rights you are exercise on your own. They don't require a governmental enabler.

The US had been operating under the Articles for years with limited success. Many laws had to be passed unanimously, which was virtually impossible. The government also had no authority to collect taxes. It also lacked an executive branch or courts. The result was chaos. States became less cooperative, especially after the war ended and they did not feel as much pressure to remain united. Several rebellions threatened to overthrow State governments.Leaders initially got together to amend the Articles to make them more workable. They quickly decided to throw out the Articles and write a whole new document. That became the Constitution.American Revolution Podcast

Why did the framers of the US' Constitution decide to give more power to the state governments?

First of all it doesn't give power to the states. the states ALREADY HAD THEIR POWER. And just like the we the People as INDIVIDUALS WE ALREADY HAD THE RIGHTS the amendments AFFIRM. The constitution DOES NOT grant rights to individuals or states. Its function is to LIMIT again... LIMIT the power. given to the federal government. We The People just finished violently overthrowing our government. PREVENTING the federal government from gaining so much power it could stop us from violently overthrowing it again was the concern.

Think of the US as a group of very closely allied countries using OUR federal government to keep trade fair and for the common defense of our borders.

This allows individuals to govern themselves from the bottom up thereby ensuring the larger or stronger group cannot force their will on smaller groups and INDIVIDUALS.

Sadly most don't assign enough priority to putting in the time necessary to monitor and control our representatives so we become sheep. Too few read legislation introduced much less passed. We allow charmers who would exploit to hold office. These are career politicians. Few exceptions exist whose reason for running was to help YOU.

After all, when two wolves and a sheep vote on what's for dinner... Its usually lamb.

Why did they write the constitution?

They needed to revise the Articles of Confederation and that was their original intention. But it became clear that an entire new Constitution was necessary. One of the major factors was financial- the Five Per Cent Impost was the first attempt at a federal tax, introduced during the Revolution as the colonies had no federal income. But there was no true federal authority under the articles and the Impost was contested- Rhode Island refused to accept it, and so they also initially rejected the Constitution- not even sending a delegate to the Convention.

It is a neglected fact that the Articles had been argued over for a decade, enough to fill volumes- as opposed to the Constitutional debates, which were relatively brief but hotly contested.

It was high time to create a new Republic, something the Articles never did. They composed the Constitution out of absolute necessity.
