Why Do I Get Sudden Jerking Movements In My Hands And Face Body Movements Tourette

What is it like to have Tourette syndrome?

I have Tourette's. I've known since I was about 10. Genetic pass along from my mother. 4 of my siblings have it as well, and now 2 of my own 5 children have it (so far).Having Tourette's also has come with ADHD and some other disorders that I deal with (slight OCD, etc). My Tourette's is something I've embraced as part of who I am and I think that has made my experience different than some people's experience. A lot of "what it's like" has to do with how you personally embrace, reject, and/or deal with it. For me, it's easier than others because I have been lucky to have symptoms that I can more easily hide or minimize through normal body movements, activities, etc. A lot of my bad moments happen at the end of the day when I am decompressing and trying to relax. It is then that they tend to really unleash - and if I am stressed or over-tired, it can be bad.Lately I have developed a couple that make it more difficult physically because one involves flexing and scrunching my neck and shoulder, which causes me bad headaches. Another is where I stop breathing as I do things - sort of like sleep apnea, without sleep. My wife noticed this one and worries bout it. It makes me tired and I enter my sleep already behind...But, it is a challenge that I have and it has been something I have pushed through. I have never let it be an excuse for anything and it has made me stronger. Also, as I have learned to hide the symptoms in things I do, etc, it has made me more self-aware and self-conscious, which improves multiple areas of myself - not just the ability to hide my symptoms. It has made me a better observer, listener, and manager of myself around others. Also, Tourette's has brought me an added energy level that most can't keep up with. This has been a huge blessing in my career as I started my own businesses or have juggled many responsibilities. What tires most people out is normal for me, and I love it. In some ways, it is my own super power.Having Tourette's is different for everyone and what it means to them can be very different than what it means to me. I think that there is no "one" answer. Maybe the best way to ask, is to ask those you know who have it, so you understand how it affects them. I always appreciate when I can take the time to explain it to others so they can learn about it, understand me better, and perhaps slowly change the perceptions and acceptance of those who have it.

Does anyone live with, or know anyone living with Tourettes Syndrome, and what is it like? Pls be honest.?

It can be difficult at times, but for the most part, we treat my son (10 years old with Tourettes, OCD and ADHD) with the same love and respect at always. He has homework and chores like everybody else. In fact he thinks he is "normal" and has trouble believing that he has it!

He is slowly coming to terms with it. It takes extra patience and grace, which God provides, to do my best with him. I love him so very much, and pray that he will have the tools in life to deal with things. Not so much the Tourettes, per se, but to deal with people who stare, laugh or comment rudely. Sadly, that is more of a problem than the disorder itself.

I am teaching him that he can do anything, ANYTHING, that he chooses and puts his own mind to do. He has an IQ of 124 which is pretty smart. I am so proud he is my son.

Why is it that sometimes when I urinate I get the shivers?

There's already a detailed answer. So, I'd be as brief as I can. Thanks for the A2A. :)More often than not the shiver or trembling the body goes through during or after peeing occurs after you have held on to the urine for quite a long time before finally releasing it. The shiver normally occurs after urination or moments before the urination ends. The shiver starts in the spine and rapidly moves all over the body, causing the entire body to shudder briefly.Below are some of the reasons why a person might shake after urinating:According to doctors, one of the likely reasons is because the body’s temperature quickly gets lowered after we have released enormous amounts of warm fluids from the body in the form of urine. As a result of this, the body’s protective mechanism quickly causes the body to shiver in order to bring some warmth back to the body. This is the same thing that happens to the body when we are very cold – the body begins to shiver in order to bring some heat back to the body.Another reason some people might experience pee shakes is likely because of a simple thing such as the fact that when a person wants to urinate, they expose their private parts to the cold air outside. As a result of this, the person naturally feels cold and shivers during or after urination. Also because of something called the shiver reflex. Our parasympathetic system tends to simultaneously lower blood pressure while initiating the bladder contraction (sacrum plexus). Hence in order to counter that, our sympathetic system initiates a shiver reflex to counter this drop. Men tend to experience it more since blood pressure is higher when standing and hence the drop will be significant.( hope I have not offended you. Great answer btw!)

Why does my body jerk really when I get ready to fall asleep and while I'm awake?

Hi I'm a 31 y/o female with a few questions about some symptoms that I've been having lately. Back in June of 2008 I was having what is called "absent seizures" I space out for a few minuets with no recollection of what happened and pick up right where I left. I was like ok I can deal with this. But now I have a few more symptoms that have emerged. For instance one night I couldn't go to sleep and all of the sudden I felt what was like a tens unit connected to my body. My legs and arms had a mind of their own. They just started flying all over the place uncontrollably! Then the weird part of it all after my arms and legs would do that, my wole body would jerk. I've been to numerous neurologist whith all comming to the same conclusion, epilespy. But the strange thing is that they've never caught one on an EEG. Another symptom is that these "jerks" would only happen when I'm lying down or about to fall asleep for the night. Now they happen at any moment through out the day even when I;m at work! I work as a CNA and I don;t want to put my pt's saftey at hand b/c of my condition but I need to work. I've been sent home more than 3 times b/c of this and now it's really getting on my nerves! Now I've noticied that my face twitches and my fingers contract. After I've had one of these episodes, my whole body hurts like hell. Idon't know what to do now. My neurologist says it's ok for me to work like this but I'm having second thoughts. But my main question is what can this be. My family has no history of MS or Parkinson's but we do have a history of heart attacks and strokes. One doctor told me that my body was just stressed out and this was its way of letting me know that I need rest so he put me on seraquel 50mg and said that the s"shakes" should stop, well they haven't! I don't want to seem like I'm crazy but I need answers and help ASAP!
