How do you treat a dark ring around your neck?

Hi, Our skin cells undergo a natural process of shedding when dead and renewing themselves every four weeks. Owing to the external environmental aggressors, as well as lifestyle factors such as stress, smoking, consuming alcohol or the lack of basic skin care, this turnover process of skin cells slows down, leading to piling up of dead cells on the top most layers of the skin giving it duller, uneven appearance with a coarse texture.Microplaning or ‘Leveling’ the skin is a process of removing the outer layers of skin through light feathering strokes with a specialized tool to produce evenly exfoliated, healthy looking, smooth and clear skin. This helps the skin products to absorb more easily and produce more effective results whilst also helping makeup to spread out more smoothly on the skin. As an added bonus, it removes the fine vellus hair on the face, which can trap oil and dirt and possibly lead to skin problems. When practiced as a basic skin care ritual, this treatment helps to enhance the natural shedding process of skin and promote the production of healthy new skin cells, imparting a fresh and replenished look to the skin, improving the texture and softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.Since Microplaning is a non-chemical based exfoliation procedure, the benefits of this treatment can safely be relished during pregnancy and lactation or by those planning a family. For more information, visit SKIN - Reva

It sounds like it may be Acanthosis nigricans.
Definition: Acanthosis nigricans: This is a condition that results in the darkening and thickening of certain areas of the skin especially in the skin folds. The skin becomes tan or brown and is sometimes slightly raised and described as velvety. Most often the condition, which typically looks like a small wart, appears on the sides or back of the neck, the armpits, under the breast, and groin. Occasionally the top of the knuckles will have a particularly unusual appearance. Acanthosis nigricans usually strikes people who are very overweight. There is no cure for acanthosis nigricans, but losing weight may improve the condition. Acanthosis nigricans usually precedes diabetes. There are other conditions that also are known to cause acanthosis of the skin and these include acromegaly and Cushing syndromes. It is thought that this condition is a skin manifestation of insulin resistance.

When I pregnant, I got this dark lines around my neck, how do I get rid of it?

Chloasma ("mask of pregnancy" or melasma). Some women experience a brownish darkening of the facial skin. This change is called the “mask of pregnancy.” It is more common in women with dark hair and pale skin. The woman usually has brownish, uneven marks on the forehead, temples and middle of her face. Sometimes the marks appear around the eyes or over the nose. The darkened areas may get even darker when exposed to sunlight. These marks usually fade completely after delivery.

Sun protection. Your skin is more sensitive during pregnancy. Good sun protection is very important at this time. Sunlight can darken pigment changes in your skin and increase your chances of getting “mask of pregnancy.” Use a good sun block, cover up, and wear a hat when outside. Limit the time you spend outdoors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Make-up. Cover-up and foundation can help hide dark streaks or spots on the skin. Avoid make-ups that contain mercury. Look at the label to see if the make-up contains mercury.

Acanthosis Nigricans

Acanthosis nigricans is a disorder that may begin at any age. It causes velvety, light-brown-to-black, markings usually on the neck, under the arms or in the groin. Acanthosis nigricans is most often associated with obesity.

Eating too much of the wrong foods, especially starches and sugars, can cause insulin resistance. This will result in elevated insulin levels. Most patients with acanthosis nigricans have a higher insulin level than those of the same weight without acanthosis nigricans. Elevated levels of insulin in most cases probably cause acanthosis nigricans. The elevated insulin levels in the body activates insulin receptors in the skin, forcing it to grow abnormally. Reducing the circulating insulin by dieting or medication can lead to improvement of the skin problem.

When acanthosis nigricans develops in people who are not overweight, a medical work-up should be done. Rarely acanthosis nigricans is associated with a tumor, most commonly of the stomach or gut. In these cases acanthosis can bee seen in extra places, such as the lips or hands and is unusually severe. Occasionally acanthosis nigricans is congenital or due to an endocrine (glandular) disorder.

Treatment to just improve the appearance includes Retin-A, 20% urea, alpha hydroxyacids, and lactic or salicylic acid prescriptions.
