Why Do I Have Big Ears

Why are some people born with big ears?

Upon meeting my husband for the fist time my grandmother commented that he had nice ears, and I thought that it was strange because I thought her eye sight was quite poor at that time. I remember being fascinated with the tiny ears of a black friend as a kid even though he was an adult. A boy in my son’s school was allowed to wear hat even though others were not because his ears were protuberant. It may be part ethnic and part familial. But ears are one thing that continues to grow over one’s life. Ears that stick out can be pinned back surgically, but a crease in the earlobe may portend a tendency toward heart disease.

Why do animals have big ears?

No, not all of them have big ears… thier environment is a huge factor on the ear sizes and structure. Elephants and fennecs have huge ears to help cool themselves, as the huge ears have a lot of blood vessels running close to the surface of the skin. This is also a case found in animals living in hotter parts of the world- they have big ears. Animals in colder climates like arctic foxes, polar bears etc have very small ears.It is a mammalian adaptation, since they are among very few animals that show thermoregulation (maintaining a specific body temperature regardless of the environment). Non mammals don't have ears at all.Nocturnal mammals may have big ears for a variety of reasons- they may have to rely on hearing and smell more than sight, thus big ears (bats need to pick up thier high pitch ‘clicks’ to echo locate) for hunting as well as escaping. So 'animals' don't generally have ears at all, only a specific group of them (mammals) have ears, and the structure, shape, and size evolve according to thier environment.

Why do old people have big ears?

our ears are shrinking as our personal entertainment systems shrink. people used to carry around boom boxes on their shoulders, then walkmans, then mp3 players. we used to listen to music on 12" records, then on CDs and cassettes, now they're digital files on little memory chips. speakers used to be great big things, now you can stuff them in your ear holes and they don't even have cables. so consequently our ears are getting smaller with every generation

Why do Mini Dachshund have big ears?

Standard Dachshunds and Miniature Dachshunds have the same standard.

Dachshunds have long ears because they are scent hounds. The purpose of the long ears is to help gather the scent around their nose, which helps them track their quarry when hunting.

Why do elephants have such big ears?

The big ears are to help the elephants stay cool. Elephants don't sweat, so they have a hard time dissipating excess heat (keeping cool). Their large ears contain many blood vessels that allow heat to escape into the air. When you see elephants they are usually moving their ears back and forth. This fanning helps to dissipate more heat than if their ears remained still.

The enormous ears of elephants act as cooling devices. The gigantic earflaps (which can measure up to 2 square metres (21.5 square feet) are equipped with an intricate web of blood vessels. When the animal flaps its ears, the blood temperature lowers by as much as 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit).

Why do cocker spaniels have big ears?

Veritas Vincit: Yes, you selectively breed for the trait you want and Cockers (along with every other scenting hound or bird dog) were selectively bred for long ears, because it aids them in scenting. Not a fairy tale, but THE TRUTH. You don't breed for drop ears just for the hell of it and suddenly discover that, 'wow, these dogs smell better than prick eared dogs!'

Why don't you stick with your little rat dogs and stop acting like you know everything about every single breed known to man?

Why do elephants have bigger ears?

Um, you mean bigger ears than smaller mammals? Elephants are the largest Terrestrial Mammals on Earth (until we wipe them out of the wild, our future generations may never knowing this amazing, social creature), and thus, living in the heat of Africa (& India) larger ears would not be unfitting for the of Earhs Terrestrial mammals. However, they do have large, ‘flappable Ears’ Their ears do not’stand’, likely from keeping them being scratched from brush while when reaching up into trees. Those seemingly large floppy Ears also serve to ‘Cool down’ and fan then animal..Elephants do not sweat. Thy, along with other large African mammals, love to take a good roll in available mud-holes, to protect hem from insects & to cool themselves down. Their ears help to coll down, and shoo away the onslaught of flies, and other insects..often drawn to their eyes (same as in equines and other mammals). Thus, Elephants have musculature (neurological) control over their large floppy ears…and have often been seen shielding or aiding an infant along, using their ears as a it of encouragement. Their large ears, if used for cooling in such warm habitats-fails to explain, to much smaller ears of Rhino, Hippos and animals found in similar habitat.
