Why Do I Keep On Hearing A Buzzing Sound In My Ear

Why do I keep on hearing a buzzing sound in my ear?

You are hearing tinnitus (ringing in the ears). You have a very mild case of tinnitus and the reason you are only hearing it at night is because it is very quiet and there is no background noise to mask out the sound. During the day you are surrounded by background noise so it is not noticeable.

When you do sleep on your left side you are taking away the left ear's ability to hear 100% so then all the of the sudden the tinnitus is more noticeable. Switch to your right side and it goes away because now your left ear is hearing any background noise that may be present and masking out the sound.

Tinnitus is not a disease but a symptom of another underlying condition – of the ear, the auditory nerve, or elsewhere. Tinnitus can be intermittent or constant, with single or multiple tones. According to the American Tinnitus Association 50 million Americans have tinnitus to some degree. Of those 12 million have it severe enough to seek medical attention.

The exact cause of tinnitus is not known in every case; however there are many known factors that may cause tinnitus: noise-induced hearing loss, wax build-up in the ear canal, some medications, ear or sinus infections, age-related hearing loss, ear diseases and disorders, jaw misalignment, cardiovascular disease, certain types of tumors, thyroid disorders, head and neck trauma and many others.

The most common cause of tinnitus in most Americans is exposure to loud noise and noise-induced hearing loss.

If your symptoms worsen it may be good to seek medical advice or visit an audiologist for a hearing evaluation. This will provide you a baseline of your hearing and provide some clues as to what is causing the tinnitus. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and also aspirin.

Why do I hear a buzzing sound in my ears?

This all started last night around 3a.m. (I couldn't sleep). To perfectly describe this, it sounds like a gnat is flying around in my head and it is literally driving me crazy. I don't play my music that loud in the car and I'm not in a loud environment. I resorted to putting ear plugs in my ears and I still keep hearing it. I swear, I think I'm going crazy. I'm almost convinced I'm a schizo.

Why and how do we hear ringing in our ears?

Tinnitus is the term for noises heard ‘in the ear or ears’ or ‘in the head’ when no obvious source of sound is apparent. The noises are usually described as ringing, whistling, hissing, buzzing or humming. Tinnitus is not a disease or an illness, it is a non-specific symptom, that can be brought on by a mental or physical ‘change’, not necessarily related to hearing. In a mild form, tinnitus is extremely common. Almost everyone gets the occasional ringing in the ears, either without any clear trigger or after exposure to loud sounds, be it at work or socially. About 10% of us experience tinnitus frequently and approximately 5% of the adult population in the UK experience persistent or troublesome tinnitus.Tinnitus may start suddenly or have a more gradual onset. Due to the non-specificity of the symptom the start may be related to mental or physical changes in relation to retirement, being made redundant, having concerns about your own health, or that of a close relative. It may be related to the discomfort of having your ears syringed or attending noisy night clubs or pop concerts. Tinnitus could also be related to perceived changes in hearing. Most sufferers become aware of the tinnitus in a quiet environment. Fortunately, tinnitus is rarely an indication of a serious disorder and a doctor will be able to check against this possibility. Some medicines can have tinnitus as a temporary side-effect, the most common being aspirin, but usually only when taken in high doses. The low dosage prescribed for heart problems is unlikely to have any effect. If you think a prescribed medication may be causing or aggravating your tinnitus, ask your doctor about it. As it is the brain we hear with, it is not surprising that the brain is central to both the perception of and our reaction to the tinnitus signal. So the brain is also central to the successful management of tinnitus.BTA

Buzzing "fly sound" in my ear?!?!?

I went to bed the other night and heard a fly buzzing around my head, or so I thought. It got closer to my ear and almost felt as if the "fly" was buzzing in my ear. I could hear this in both ears and it was driving me MAD! It was sometimes in the distance and then got really close. I realized there was no fly in the room what so ever, and that in was all in my head like a sub conscious noise. I haven't had it since, but I would love to know what it was and what caused it? It actually frightened me to say the least and it definitely was not a fly or insect for that matter.
