Why Do Liberals Consider Compromise

Can liberals and conservatives compromise with each other?

Liberals should compromise on their anti-markets, anti-business, anti-rich people beliefs, and then conservatives should compromise on their anti-gay, anti-choice beliefs.

Liberals stay out of conservatives wallets. Conservatives stay out of liberal bedrooms.

It's called compromise and it will make everyone more happy.

Would it be possible for liberals and conservatives to compromise on abortion? Or will there always be severe opposition?

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”I personally am willing to make reasonable compromises if the people I’m compromising with are reasonable. I would be agree to ban abortions after 20 weeks if it came with repealing the Hyde Ammendment, ubiquitous contraception, and everyone getting comprehensive sex education. The above quote is from Barry Goldwater, considered the father of modern conservatism. Mitch McConnell actually didn't vote for him because he was too right wing back in 1964. Barry Goldwater was a pro-choice conservative and did not want the religious right to take over the party. They largely have on this issue, and there's no indication they are willing to compromise. It's unlikely “pro-life “conservatives are willing to compromise on this matter. For most it has nothing to do with protecting the unborn but controlling women. The same people usually want ineffective abstinence only education and want to make it impossible to get contraception. They also want to do nothing to help take care of the kids after they are born. They want to defund an organization that provides women’s health services like cancer screenings just because a minority of clinics also offer abortions (making up 3% of their business).

Should liberals compromise with conservatives?

No

Conservatives were offered good policies that they once supported and they refused those policies simply because they were being offered by a Democrat.

Fvck compromising with conservatives. Liberals should play hardball and except nothing but the most liberal policies.

Would you say that liberals compromise their core values for the sake of social unity?

Conservatives would never compromise their core values. Which is why America voted them out, because their core values have bankrupted our country and gotten 4,200 of our soldiers killed for a lie.

On which topics are liberals willing to compromise with conservatives?

We’ve been compromising.President Obama’s Recovery Act, his stimulus package, only passed after Obama accepted GOP demands to reduce its size. Dodd Frank only passed after Obama removed the proposed ban on commercial banks investing in high-risk funds, allowing limited investments in its stead.Obama also created a bipartisan surveillance reform law in the aftermath of the Snowden leaks: making several concessions to privacy advocates without hindering the NSA’s counter-terrorism mission. In fact, the Obama administration saw bills, reducing discriminatory disparities among drug sentencing, pass with voice votes through both houses. He created a tax code some considered being the most progressive in a generation; and that passed with almost unanimous approval from Senate Republicans. Obama considered cap and trade, a conservative, market approach to dealing with climate change, and reforms to Social Security and Medicare that would have angering his voter base.Liberals and Democrats are almost always eager to compromise. Conservative groups in Congress are responsible for all five government shutdowns in the past 20 years.[1] The same can’t be said for Democrats. And even if we were to accept the contrived notion of conservative “compromise,” the deals offered show a cursory understanding of the liberal, legislative agenda. When the GOP requests billions of dollars for a near-useless, permanent wall–and rejecting offers for increased funding to border security–offering a temporary a legally protected, jointly supported amnesty program, it’s understandable why Senate Democrats are less than enthusiastic about the state of the proposed budget.[2]I’ll propose the following; give us funding for universal healthcare, student debt relief, after-school programs, environmental regulation, and a battalion of liberal judiciary appointments in federal courts and we’ll give you the wall.Deal?Footnotes[1] Ross Cohen's answer to Were far right conservatives the driving force behind most or all U.S. government shutdowns of recent years?[2] Trump offers immigration compromise to end partial shutdown; Dems cool to offer

Why do Conservatives view compromise as the equivalent of treason? Democracy requires compromise.

A man enters a gas station and pulls a knife on the clerk.“Give me all the money in the register!”“No. It’s not yours.”“Give it, or I'll cut you up.”“No!” And the attendant grabs a Louisville slugger and makes ready to swing.“Fine. Then just give me half of the money in the register!”“I said, ‘No!’ Now leave!”“Ugh! --Why won't you compromise?! We'll never accomplish anything this way!”“Whatever. Here's $10. NOW GET OUT OF HERE!”“Now, we're talkin’! How about you just give me 70% of what's in the register?”Conservatives do not consider compromise as “treason.” How silly to even say that. And they will tell you that the U.S. is not a democracy. And that if it were, all of our rights could be voted away so long as 50.0001% of voters thought that were a good idea. Conservatives generally think that would be a really bad idea. The alternative isn't perfect. Point: conservatives are fairly immune to mindless appeals to “what Democracy requires”. Whatever that means this week.Compromise is fine. Even laudable, when there are real issues in dispute. But when faced with a bully who wants to take more and more, compromise for the sake of compromise isn’t on the table.

Why is the constitution a document of compromises?

All the delegates couldn't agree on much. Southern states wanted slavery, northern states wanted to abolish it. Small states were afraid a few big states would just run the whole country. They argued over whether we should have a federal 'standing army' or just keep the state-run militias. They argued about federal powers vs states rights.

To their great credit, they managed to resolve their differences through compromise. The idea was that everyone gave something up, nobody got everything they wanted but hopefully everyone got something they could live with.

Today this is seen as a -liberal- idea. Conservatives (Republicans) see compromise as total capitulation. But in those days it was seen as -statesmanship-.
